Lagomorph Design Furniture Design

Currently,

My role as a furniture designer at Lagomorph is one of many hats. Being a small team we all carry the load. I am able to be involved in multiple stages of the process and learn about the production by collaborating with the fabrication crew. Our clients included architects, designers, general contractors, and homeowners. We were involved in all stages of the process. Sometimes as designers and creators, others only as translators and fabricators.

Challenge

During my time at Lagomorph, we’ve started to develop the MDRN line. These products are meant to be produced in batch quantities, not custom one-off’s like the majority of Lagomorph’s current business. Some of these products were pitched to CB2 for mass production.

Bar CartThe bar cart was developed for CB2 and designed for low cost construction. The finish is white lacquer with veneered walnut drawers and solid walnut dowels. It’s designed for small and flexible living spaces.

Wine RackThe wine rack was developed for modular applications and implements the standard walnut peg configuration we use across multiple products.

BenchThe bench was created from bent steel legs, patinaed black. The tops are fabricated from solid oak slabs.

Side TableThe side table was created using laser cut steel legs, patinaed black. The tops are created using wood cut off’s that would not be suitable for normal furniture construction.

Air Hockey ConceptsThe Air Hockey table was created as a special project for the semi annual Dock 6 Design & Art Show. We tested a new ‘w’ base form as a derivative of our popular ‘x’ base table.

The biggest challenge for the table was to create a fully functioning air hockey table from scratch. The key was to create an air tight base with a controlled number of 1mm diameter vents to allow the puck to float. We cut the vent holes and inlays in top using the CNC router. 30"

Cog Connect Graduate Thesis

A few years back,

During my time in grad school, I worked as TA in the woodshop. My experience sparked an interest in connecting small-scale production with traditional manufacturing and design methodologies. The goal of my graduate thesis is to examine the Indie movement in design and establish a new design process that balances Indie values with traditional industry applications.

Indie Movement

Defining ‘Indie’Indie Design is rapidly growing. Indie Creators are utilizing tools like 3d printing and CNC milling and unique and sustainable materials to create niche design productsThe distinction between professional designer and hobbyist is becoming more and more blurred.

Indie creators can be the designer, producer, & retailer of their products.Indie is now large enough where it is impacting business of traditional industry. The growth of online information & communities in addition to flexible, inexpensive manufacturing and readily accessible technology is all contributing to a new design process.

Page 13: Matt Hunter Design Portfolio 2014

DevelopmentThe goal of the final designs was to use Indie values within the design of applications and software,-Community - Advocacy & Awareness -Emerging Tech - Trending Materials and Processes -Bottom-Up - User-Generated Content and Growth

Bottom Up ContentEarly concepts focused on creating an alert system that uses rider tagged hazards for cycling conditions that could be viewed by other users.A twitter handle was created for riders to tag and alert one another to hazards, events, and noteworthy rides.

Developing Digital CommunityThe Cycle Mapping App concept uses GPS technology to create an evolving bike map of the city. The system can be accessed online and from a smartphone. The app uses the riders cellphone as a GPS tracking device recording the data and route of their ride. Using the social networking feature, users can share your routes with friends, and look up the most popular routes in the city.

Tracking SystemThe Cycle Tether feature concept uses GPS technology which is embedded in the bar ends to monitor when a bike is tampered with and possibly stolen.

Mapping the bikes location allows real-time tracking of the missing bike’s location. User’s can view the current path of travel of their missing bike.

Other users in the adjacent area are alerted to the crime. They are shown a photo of the bike and the name of the owner.

The sensor uses a standard AA battery for months of battery life and an accelerometer for an auto power switch. The GPS chip tracks rider data and also functions as a digital leash to track the bike if it is stolen. The sensor installs into the handlebars using a special key tool to prevent theft. Rubber rings tension inside the handlebar when the key is turned.

Logan Square Soccer Club Sports Branding

In my free time,

In the fall of 2012, I was home and unable to work due to an accident. I started to fill my time in those weeks by reconnecting with what I truly love, sports design. The project gained momentum and was taken from a few sketches to a fully realized set of products and apparel. The goal of the Logan Square branding project was to create an identity and uniform kit for a neighborhood soccer club. The brand had to connect the rich history of the neighborhood with the new sense of rebirth and culture.

Problem - Bad Logo Design

Current State of Sports LogosI’ve always felt that a surprisingly large number of sports logos are poorly designed or at best trendy. As a passionate lifelong sports fan and designer, I’ve felt I could contribute to this industry. Logan Square Sports Club was created as a local neighborhood sports club in Chicago.

Logo Development & Inspirations

Building an IdentityLogan Square is a neighborhood that has transformed over the past few years. The center of the neighborhood is the square itself. The large column monument is the centerpiece of the badge, just as it is in Logan. The colors and stars were selected to match the Chicago flag.

New Business Formed

A Union is BornMy experience with this project led myself and a friend from grad school, to start our own sports branding & design consultancy. Union Sport & Design’s goal is to create meaningful identities and products for the unique culture of sports.

Rocky Boots Footwear Design

During the internship at Rocky Brands I helped to develop casual shoes and hunting boot designs for the fall season. Sketching and materials was a major emphasis. The summer long experience was a crash course in footwear design and I loved it!

A favorite,

Understanding Brand & StyleRocky Outdoor Gear is a world leader in rugged outdoor and occupational footwear. A corporate office, warehouse, and distribution center reside the original manufacturing building in Nelsonville that goes back to 1932

Sketching & Ideation

Page 29: Matt Hunter Design Portfolio 2014

The main project goal was to create a family of shoes that reflected the rugged feel of the Rocky brand but, integrated into a more casual everyday shoe. The challenge of the design was to create these designs on an existing outsole.

BOBCAT CASUAL CHUKKA

Materials & ConstructionThe hunting shoe uses durable Cordura material and full-grain water proof leather. A rigid plastic heel piece was added to lock the foot down across difficult terrain. The casual chukka is made from suede and a full grain leather. Accent stitching and laces gives the shoe a more fashionable feel.
