Android & iOS lead in mindshare, HTML comes third

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Android leads in terms of mindshare with 72% of developers using the platform vs. 56% for iOS. HTML is the third platform, used by 50% of respondents to our survey By Android, iOS etc developers we mean the platforms chosen by our respondents as their ‘primary’, i.e. their first choice
Page 8: Matos visionmobile

Page 8

Windows Phone the ‘next’ platform for most developers

Presenter
Presentation Notes
On average mobile developers use 2.6 mobile platforms in our latest survey, compared to 2.7 in 2012 and 3.2 in our 2011 survey Right now, there are several platforms competing for third place: Windows Phone, Firefox, the new BB 10 and Tizen. Sales and user reach will be the determining factor, as it’s one of the main reasons developers adopt a platform

Page 9

Android cheaper & easier to use, iOS greater revenue potential

Presenter
Presentation Notes
80% of respondents in our sample develop for Android, iOS or both, making them the baseline in any platform mix. Developers that do not develop for one of these two platforms generate, on average, half the revenue of those developers that do

HTML needs better native APIs to compete against native

Multi-platforms development is a major challenge. For a solo developer there is so much they need to look at. You can use cross- platform tools like PhoneGap but it’s not that simple, there is a lot of tweaking to be done. Going native can also be hard, it takes a lot of time and patience” Glenn Stein Java developer and

Maker of PhraZapp

Presenter
Presentation Notes
To compete with native, HTML5 needs better native API access (35% of HTML developers), a better development environment (34%), better debugging support (22%)

Which apps make money?

Advertising most popular model - used by 38% of developers

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Advertising is used by 38% of developers in our sample, but it’s the model with the least per app month revenue Subscription services are the least used by developers, but the most lucrative, with an average of $2,649 per app month

Multi-platform developers earn more money

More HTML & iOS devs over the ‘app poverty line’ than Android

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Around 40% of HTML and iOS developers are above the app poverty line, when taking away the % of developers who don’t care about making money In contrast, nearly 80% of BB and WP developers are below the poverty line

The recipe to high revenues is extending apps into new markets

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Nearly half of our sample based their apps on what they themselves wanted to see. In contrast, only ¼ discussed their planned apps with users The most successful recipe for developers was to extend their apps into new markets or new verticals, i.e. using apps that have been tried and proven

App monetisation depends on a large number of factors: Platform variables, such as reach, learning curve Revenue model Region Market sector or vertical App category Time spent on planning & development Marketing

Monetisation is a complex equation

The developer learning curve is far steeper on the business side than on the coding side, and its getting steeper.”

George Karavias Developer & CEO Anlock “

Page 19: Matos visionmobile

Page 19

South America second in feature phone development

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Feature phones are largely abandoned in mature markets, like N. America and Europe, but are widely targeted by developers in Asia, South America and particularly Africa Tablets are targeted consistently across regions – highest % is in North America and lowest in Asia TV and set-top boxes are not a viable target for developers right now
Page 20: Matos visionmobile

Page 20

South American developers mostly use advertising

Presenter
Presentation Notes
In the US and European markets, PPD and advertising are used to an equal extent, while advertising is clearly in the lead in emerging markets Freemium is second most popular revenue model in Africa, Asia and South America
Page 21: Matos visionmobile

Page 21

Monetisation varies widely across regions

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Developers in North America generate about 30% more than European developers, who in turn generate 47% more revenue than developers in Asia Two of the most important factors is higher consumer spending in the US, as well as a higher penetration of iOS, which is the most lucrative platform
