Public Workshop : GeoGebra is great - try it! Date: Saturday 15th October 2011 Time: 12.00- 13.15pm Location: Digital Hub in Tallaght Library ( Beside the Red Line Luas terminus in Tallaght) Workshop Description GeoGebra is free to use software which defines algebraic objects geometrically (it draws equations) and geometric objects algebraically (it makes equations from geometry). This is a powerful combination and allows the user terrific insight. The software is easy to learn, intuitive and well supported technically and through user groups. This will be a “show – do” type session, where the workshop leader will show you how to do something then ask you to modify it to do something new, or answer a question. These will cover a variety of mathematical topics that might be met in school maths work. At the end of the workshop you can pick up a variety of labs to work through at home if you wish. The labs have been developed at IT Tallaght and at the Centre for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching and Learning at Limerick University. The Workshop is facilitated by members of the Dublin GeoGebra Institute,

Interesting Events for Students

Tallaght Cubed – Portable Maths Eyes photo exhibiton: Tallaght Cubed is a portable interactive photographic exhibition developed jointly by the Tallaght Photographic Society and IT Tallaght that looks at views and places of Tallaght through maths eyes. The series of photos is accompanied by a worksheet for students to help them look at the exhibition using their ‘Maths Eyes’. The exhibition would provide an ideal activity for Maths Week. The exhibition would probably best suit second year students. The exhibition is available on loan for a day during Maths Week by any school interested. Interested schools should contact Ciaran O’Sullivan at [email protected] for further information. Early booking is advised. Solve-IT ! – Maths Eyes Problem Poster Exhibition at ITT Dublin This is an interactive Maths problem picture exhibition developed by Institute of Technology Tallaght as part of Looking at Tallaght through Maths Eyes initiative which took place in June 2011. Looking at Tallaght through Maths Eyes was a community initiative led by South Dublin Libraries and Institute of Technology Tallaght, that aimed to show people, through a variety of fun activities, that without realising it they use maths all of the time and are probably much better at maths than they realise. The exhibition is accompanied by a worksheet for students to help them look at the exhibition using their ‘Maths Eyes’. The exhibition will be held in the foyer of IT Tallaght Monday 17th October to Friday 21st October 2011 . The exhibition would probably best suit 4-6th primary school students and first and second year secondary school students and would take about 40 minutes for students to complete. Booking to view the exhibition is essential . Interested schools should contact Jeannette Kelly on 4042744 or at [email protected] for further information. Early booking is advised. Enriching Mathematics Learning - Secondary School students workshop As part of maths week 2011 the national organisers of Maths week has arranged for Charlie Gilderdale , one of the top presenters from NRICH, to conduct a series of one hour student workshops ( capacity 30 students per workshop) on Tuesday 18th October in IT Tallaght. The workshops will focus on activities that challenge students to think mathematically and activities that enrich students’ experience of mathematics. The workshops will suit secondary school students of any year. Interested schools should contact Jeannette Kelly on 4042744 or at [email protected] for further information. Early booking is advised. During this workshop facilitated by Charlie Gilderdale, students will have the opportunity to develop the skills of conjecturing, generalising, justifying and proving – key processes at the heart of mathematical thinking. By tackling challenging and sometimes intriguing problems collectively and reflecting on alternative strategies, students may gain useful insights that can extend the bounds of their individual mathematical capability. The workshop will be based on problems published on the NRICH website (www.nrich.maths.org).

Looking at Tallaght through Maths Eyes was a community initiative (held in June 2011) led by Institute of Technology Tallaght and South Dublin Libraries. The initiative aimed to show people, through a variety of fun activities, that without realising it they use maths all of the time and are probably much better at maths than they realise. The initiative aimed to

• Develop the maths eyes of the Tallaght community: (Every member of the community has maths eyes – they just need to be opened).

• Help the Tallaght community to make the link between mathematics and the real world. (A key focus was to encourage the community to use Maths Eyes when they think about their water usage and water conservation)

• Empower people and build their confidence in own maths knowledge and skills ( empowered parents are more confident in supporting their children’s learning, more confident citizens can make more informed evaluations of the information that bombards them everyday and have a better understanding of the impact of their actions and decisions in their life, work and leisure),
