Key Ideas from speaker Bruce Moody...

•Children not ready  - artificial barriers

•Children can pick up our attitudes towards particular groups - particularly our target kids - Must be excited.  Try and lighten up your voice.  Be careful of facial expression and tone of vice.

•W.I.H.W: Don’t confuse the activity with a Learning Intention, you might have a LI for a 2-3 weeks or longer.  For stage 5 children it could be "Use what we know to solve new problems." Stage 4 "Do our maths without counting."

•You don’t have to teach every single strategy in the numeracy books, do a few that are effective and move on.

•Children who are ‘counting on’ - tell them NOT to do it.

•Struggling children usually get less wait time - they actually need 2-3 times longer

•Mainland cheese - Good things take time.

•Spray and walk away - Give them a problem, walk away, don't do all the setting up stuff.

Extra study?? Interested???•EDCURRIC 349

•12 lectures across 1 year. We watched each lecture from 3.15-5.30 (You may need to stay till 6pm for the first 3 lectures).

•one half of the fees paid for by the MoE and you can apply for the other half to be paid for by the school.

•4 assignments - Each assignment is made up of around 30-40 questions. You simply need to answer the equation or describe in words how you would solve the problem. In assignment 1 & 2 we interviewed a child in our class and described the outcome.

In assignment 4 there was a short number knowledge test.•Possibility of some release time in school.

Feedback from people who have been involved in this course this year.
