MATHS Maths Topic Overview: Coordinates Hello Year 6, This week, we’ll be moving onto coordinates. Our work on shapes and shape vocabulary will be very useful for this topic. We’ll start by exploring a four-quadrant graph, learning how to read and plot quadrants. You’ll then put your learning to the test by becoming codebreakers before embarking on your final challenge – coordinate reasoning challenges! We’ve also set you the task of creating your own hidden messages for your friends and family to solve. Do you have a code you’d like us to solve? Email it through and we’ll see if we’re able break the codes you create. Have fun and happy learning! Miss Arnold and Ms Berry Lesson 1 Get your brain going with 1 game in the GARAGE on RockStars! Maths Topic Overview: Coordinates

Hello Year 6,

This week, we’ll be moving onto coordinates. Our work on shapes and shape vocabulary

will be very useful for this topic. We’ll start by exploring a four-quadrant graph, learning

how to read and plot quadrants. You’ll then put your learning to the test by becoming

codebreakers before embarking on your final challenge – coordinate reasoning

challenges! We’ve also set you the task of creating your own hidden messages for your

friends and family to solve.

Do you have a code you’d like us to solve? Email it through and we’ll see if we’re able

break the codes you create.

Have fun and happy learning!

Miss Arnold and Ms Berry

Today, we’ll be learning how to read and plot coordinates.

What are coordinates?

A set of values that show an exact position.

On graphs, coordinates are usually written as a

pair of numbers: the first number shows the

distance along, and the second number shows

the distance up or down. Have a look at the

example on the right.

Some of you may remember the saying:

“along the corridor, up/down the stairs”

This helps us to remember how to read and plot coordinates.

Hi Banksy and Shonibare!

Every day, we’ll be providing Maths activities to keep all of your Maths skills alive.

Remember to also make time for TTRS and Mathletics – these should be accessed daily.

Work through PowerPoint Yr6 Maths su1 wk4 Presentation 1 to continue to develop

your understanding of coordinates on a four-quadrant graph. When you’re ready, have a

go at the activities below.

Activity1: Can you locate the position of each famous person and record the

coordinates?

Which Olympic sports are at the coordinates listed? Look out for decimal

half coordinates.

Write the coordinates of the different Olympic sports. Then translate them (move

them) and write the new coordinates.

Look out for decimal half coordinates. The first one has been done for

you.

(-4,-2) (3,-3)

Ms Berry:

First I found the starting

coordinates.

Then I moved on to finding

the finishing coordinate. I

first counted 7 to the right

from – 4 and then one

down from – 2.

Warm

Up!

Today we are going to use our skills of reading and plotting coordinates to decipher

(solve) hidden messages.

Activity 1: Discover the secret code words by plotting the coordinates and joining

them together with straight lines.

Miss Arnold:

Each row of coordinates creates a letter!

Once you have plotted the coordinates on a

row, join the up before moving onto the next

row.

Activity 2: Are you ready for a joke? Identify the letters plotted at the given coordinates

to discover the hidden maths joke.

Up:

Today, we’ll continue to practise reading and plotting coordinates.

Top-Tips to Remember:

Activity 2: For the following activities, you’ll be asked to plot coordinates

for shapes, so use the shape knowledge you have built up in the last two

weeks to help you.

Lesson 4

Today, we’ll apply our knowledge of coordinates to reasoning questions.

This a great lesson to work through with a friend. So if you can, pair

up with one of your friends and have fun together solving the

reasoning questions.

Work through the PowerPoint Yr6 Maths su1 wk4 presentation 2 to help you hone

in on your reasoning skills. Really focus on every step being shown.

Activities: Read through each question. Try to highlight/underline the key

information to help you really understand what the question is asking you to do.

Lesson 5 creating codes for friends to solve and mathletics activity

Play against the world with 1 game in the FESTIVAL on RockStars!

Well done for the all you have achieved this week. We’ll be ending the week with

some activities on Mathletics. Before however, have a look at your Friday Challenge.

Friday Challenge!

Put your coordinate skills to the test by creating secret code words for your family and

friends to solve.

Remember to record your coordinates for others to plot. You can use the box below.

Now: Visit some of your learning on Mathletics. Enjoy!
