Maths Home Learning Week Beginning 8th June 2020

Maths Introduction

This week in maths we will be revising year 2 methods of multiplication

beginning with reminding ourselves how to use the multiplication symbol and

using arrays before looking specifically at the 2, 5 and 10 time tables.

All of the lessons we are planning link in with our “White Rose” scheme of

learning and BBC bitesize lessons for May. We have done this so that you can go

to the links below for further help and advice.

All of the lessons we are planning link in with our “White Rose” scheme of

learning and BBC bitesize lessons for May. We have done this so that you can go

to the links below for further help and advice.

and teaching videos to support the ideas below.

L.O. To use the multiplication symbol

Look at the image below. What can you see?

You can see two groups of four red counters

You could write this as 4 + 4 = 8 or 2 x (groups of) 4 = 8.

What if we rearranged the counters into a different pattern?

There are still 8 counters but the groupings have changed.

You could write 2 + 2 +2 + 2 = 8 or 4 x 2 = 8

Try these

Now try these.

Continue the pattern below. Explain what you notice.

Challenges

Top Tip – Draw each number sentence

before you write down your answers.

Top Tip Grab 12 counting objects.

How many different ways can you

organise them into equal groups?

What about if you had 16 counters – how many groups can you make now? Don’t

forget to write down the addition and multiplication number sentences.

All of the lessons we are planning link in with our “White Rose” scheme of

learning and BBC bitesize lessons for May. We have done this so that you can go

to the links below for further help and advice.

and teaching videos to support the ideas below.

L.O. To use Arrays

One of the main methods for working out multiplication in year 2 is by the

drawing of arrays.

You might have objects in your house that will help you with arrays today. – Egg

trays, lego, baking trays, bars of chocolate

Any of these things will be useful for helping you to work out

arrays today.

Look at this egg tray. It shows 5 groups of 2 5 x 2 = 10 or 2

groups of 5 2 x 5 = 10

If you have any of these objects in your house collect them up and

use them to create your own arrays using my examples to help you.

Or complete the task below.

Make arrays to show the number sentences below.

3 x 5 or 5 x 3

2 x 6 or 6 x 2

3 x 7 or 7 x 3 3 x 4 or 4 x 3

L.O. Multiplying by 2

We have done a lot of work in school on the 2 times tables. Today we are

recapping what you have learnt already to answer questions.

Before you start, you might like to write down all the facts of the 2 times

tables or make it using objects and drawings.

Now try this: Each of these questions has two problems to solve. Remember to

read each one carefully.

Write the multiplication number sentence for each question.

How many wheels are there on 5 bikes?

How many wheels are there on 5 bikes?

If there were 7 bikes, how many wheels would there be?

Using a number line to multiply by 2.

Remember when you use a number line to multiply it always starts on 0

Try these using a number line to help you. Or you could use objects.

How many socks are there in three pairs of socks?

If there were 8 pairs of sock, how many socks would there be?

How many socks are there in four pairs of gloves?

If there were 11 pairs of gloves, how many gloves would there be?

L.O. Multiplying by 5

We have already done lots of work on the 5 times table at school. Today we are

recapping what we have already learnt.

Before you start, write down everything you know about the 5 time table

including patterns and facts.

Use the 100 square to colour in all of the squares for multiples of 5.

Now match the images below to the times-table facts

Use the space below to draw pictures for the following facts of the 5 times

table.

4 x 5 6 x 5

7 x 5 9 x 5

Complete the problems below using the number line method as shown above.

L.O. Multiplying by 10

When we multiply by 10 it means that things are getting 10 times bigger. We

have done a lot of counting in tens multiplying by 10. Everything you do today

will be to build your confidence when you are multiplying by 10.
