ExpertiseMathew works in our Tax and Revenue team advising local, national and international clients on state and federal taxes.

Mathew has a broad range of expertise in tax matters including corporate restructures, finance transactions, international taxation, fuel tax, stamp duty, payroll tax disputes, wine equalisation tax (WET) and GST. He has helped clients object to significantly increased Land Tax Assessments issued by RevenueSA for major rural projects in South Australia. He also achieved a favourable settlement for a rural co-operative in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in relation to tax concessions.

In the resources sector, Mathew helped a large international conglomerate obtain a favourable stamp duty assessment and another large overseas company obtain significant refunds of GST paid in relation to an Australian mining joint venture.

Mathew also advised on a High Court appeal in relation to stamp duty payable on disposal of a partnership interest which re-considered 30 years of partnership taxation rules.

Working for the Australian branches of overseas-based companies, Mathew has helped many clients deal with difficult and contentious Australian Tax Office issues. He has obtained favourable income tax rulings for several multi-national organisations and defended audits in regards to GST and corporation tax obligations.

Qualifications and industry involvement Mathew has Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) from Adelaide University and a Master of Laws (Taxation) at Sydney University.
