Percorso
Argomento: Tettonica delle placche , vulcani e terremoti (“Plate Tectonics, Volcanoes and Earthquakes”)
Approfondimento: Determinazione dell’epicentro di un terremoto (“How to Determine the Epicenter”)
Distribution
The Earth's crust is broken up into pieces. These pieces are called plates. Heat rising and falling inside the mantle creates convection currents generated by radioactive decay in the core. The convection currents move the plates. Where convection currents diverge near the earths crust, plates move apart. Where convection currents converge, plates move towards each other. The movement of the plates, and the activity inside the Earth, is called plate tectonics.Plate tectonics cause earthquakes and volcanoes. The point where two plates meet is called a plate boundary. Earthquakes and volcanoes are most likely to occur either on or near plate boundaries.Click on the map below to show the world's tectonic plates and the distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes

METHOD (having at least three stations)
SUMMARY a) Select a seismogram
b) Identify the beginning of the P-wave and the S-wave on the seismogram, and determine the time of each of these events.
Repeat (a) and (b) steps for each station
c) Calculate the time difference between the arrival of the S-wave and the arrival of the P-wave.
d) Use the Travel Time graph to find the distance from the station to the event and the Origin Time. Repeat (c) and (d) steps for each station
e) Using the distance scale on the station map, set your compass to the correct distance and draw a circle on the map, centered on the station.
Repeat step (e) for each stations.
f) The epicenter will be located in the region where the circles overlap

Determining epicenter
INTRODUCTION: USGS suggest the following method to define the epicenter. Fill in the blanks and arrange the sentences in the right sequence using letters from a) to g)
to START: You have three seismograms recorded at three stations. RIGHT ANSWERS
Select one_____________. a Select one seismogram
Use your Travel Time graph to _________ the distance from the station to the event.
d Use your Travel Time graph to find the distance from the station to the event.
The epicenter will be located in the region where the circles overlap
g The epicenter will be located in the region where the circles overlap
Calculate the time difference between the arrival of the S-wave and the arrival of the P-wave.
c Calculate the time difference between the arrival of the S-wave and the arrival of the P-wave.
