WHEN and WHILE

→ subordinate conjunction untuk menyatakan hubungan waktu atau sebagai time expression.

→ Di dalam time clause, when dan while berguna untuk menjembatani hubungan dengan main clause.

WHEN and WHILE

Time clause dan main clause kemudian bergabung menjadi complex sentence.

Menggunakan Simple Past Tense dan/atau Past Continuous

WHEN

simple past tense (later event) + when + simple past tense (earlier event)

when + simple past tense (earlier event) + simple past tense (later event)

• When my neighbour rang the bell, I opened the door.*) later event hanya terjadi sekali

• I often did exercise in the gym when I lived in Bandung.*) peristiwa di dalam main clause merupakan kebiasaan di masa lampau

WHEN

past continuous tense + when + simple past tense (interruption)

atau

when + simple past tense (interruption) + past continuous tense

• I was studying in the library when someone greeted me. • When you knocked on the door, she was taking a bath.

WHILE

While berada pada posisi yang berkebalikan dengan when.

past tense + while + past continuous tense

• While I was studying in the library, someone greeted me.• You knocked on the door while she was taking a bath.

WHILE

past continuous tense + while + past continuous tense

• While my brother was sleeping at home, I was playing outside.

• He was working at the office, while his wife was cooking at home.
