Magnum DS circuit breakers areavailable in a family of threephysical frame sizes.

The MDN narrow frame is thehighest performing power circuitbreaker of its size and rating class.Continuous current ratings areavailable from 800 to 1600amperes (drawout) and 800 to 2000amperes (fixed mounted).Withstand and interrupting ratingsare available from 42 to 65 kA at600Vac. The MDN compact sizeallows for application in compactenclosures of many types.

The MDS standard frame is ideal-ly suited for the construction of ver-tically stacked modular ANSI/ULSwitchgear and Switchboards.Continuous current ratings areavailable from 800 to 3200 amperesin the same frame with uniform 5inch pole center spacing.Withstand ratings are available to85 kA and interrupting ratings to100 kA at 600 Vac for improved sys-tem coordination and service conti-nuity.

The MDS double-wide frame isideal for application as main andtie breakers in high capacity powerdistribution systems. Continuouscurrent ratings are available in 4000and 5000 amperes. A 6000 rating isavailable when the breaker isapplied in a suitably designed andtested fan cooled enclosure.Withstand and interrupting ratingsare available to 100 kA at 600Vacfor maximum system coordinationwith down stream devices.

The Magnum DS circuit breaker issignificantly smaller than previ-ous generation open type metalframe power circuit breakers. Highstrength, thermoset compositeresin materials used in the breakerframe provide increased strengthfor higher capacity ratings. Thisleads to the design of smaller andmore economic enclosuresusing far less critical floorspace.

The modern, through-the-doordesign construction results inenclosures of shallower depth,while providing three position dra-wout levering and storage with theenclosure door closed.

The modular design of theMagnum DS standard and double-wide frames is the key to designsimplification and more compactSwitchgear. Two columns of sin-gle-wide circuit breakers can bestacked over or under double-widebreakers with a common riser bus.

The MDN narrow frame circuitbreaker is available in a compactcassette with horizontal primarystabs and terminals, making it idealfor single high compact enclosures.Optional vertical adapter kits areavailable for applications wherebus bar termination in the verticalplane or multiple stacking of break-ers is preferred.

MDS standard and double-wideframe circuit breakers are avail-able in two types of cassettes; theuniversal and basic cassette. Bothhave vertical primary terminalstabs for interface with the breaker.A uniform 5 inch pole center spac-ing makes these cassettes ideal forapplications that require stacking ofmultiple circuit breakers in a singleenclosure structure.

The Universal Cassette is avail-able in 3-pole and 4-pole configura-tions and is supplied with large flatprimary pre-drilled terminal pads.This offers maximum flexibility forthe enclosure manufacturer byallowing for bus bar termination inthe horizontal or vertical planes orfrom the top or bottom direction.

The Basic Cassette is designed toaccommodate 3-pole applicationswhere the enclosure manufacturerprefers primary terminations withbus bars in the vertical plane.Optional vertical bus bar stab kitsare available for purchase or theenclosure manufacturer can chooseto self-fabricate these stabs as partof their manufacturing system.

Magnum DS Bare BonesSwitchgear provides an assemblysolution that is as complete asspecified by the OEM, but still hasprovisions for added value. “BareBones” Switchgear is generallyprovided without enclosure wiringand includes sufficient blank panelspace and room for OEM addedcomponents. The OEM typicallyadds the relaying, metering andother customized components andcompletes the wiring and tests thecomplete assembly to customize itto their customer requirements.

Magnum DS Power Modulesprovide a “shell” frame assembly,which allows for substantial modifi-cation and value added by theenclosure manufacturer. Powermodules consist of base metalstructures, compartment cells andvertical bus. Typically the OEM willself-fabricate the horizontal bus, theexterior panels, and the compart-ment doors. The OEM then assem-bles the individual structures, addsthe relaying, metering, and othercustomized components. Finallythe assembly is wired and tested tocustomer requirements.

Introduction

The Magnum DS Low Voltage PowerCircuit Breaker affords customersthe opportunity to meet the increas-ingly complex requirements ofmodern distribution systems. It isdesigned and tested for use in lowvoltage power distribution assem-blies applied at nominal voltages of240, 480, and 600 volts ac.Magnum DS is available in drawoutand fixed circuit breaker mountingconfigurations. High interruptingratings up to 100kA without fusesand continuous current ratingsfrom 800 through 6000 amperesare covered by three differentframe sizes.

Magnum DS circuit breakers are ULlisted, and are built and tested in anISO 9000 certified facility. The circuitbreakers meet or exceed all applica-ble ANSI, NEMA, UL and CSA stan-dards including:

Introduction

The Magnum DS power circuitbreaker was designed and tested tomeet the requirements of the ANSImarket. It is a 100% rated device,designed to carry 100% of itsnameplate current rating in anenclosure without derating.

Magnum DS circuit breakers are ULListed, and tested to all applicableNEMA, ANSI, IEEE and UL standards.Specifically, the circuit breakerscomply with the following:

ANSI C37.50 testing is demandingand consists of four test sequences.All tests are performed using adrawout circuit breaker in its mini-mum size enclosure for each framesize. The first three tests are similarin a number of ways to tests per-formed on other types of low volt-age circuit breakers, such as moldedcase circuit breakers. It is thefourth test sequence that differenti-ates the power circuit breaker fromother circuit breakers.

Test Sequence 1This test sequence consists of atemperature rise test, an overloadcalibration, and then a short circuittest.

Test Sequence 2 This test sequence consists of aseries of short circuit tests.

Test Sequence 3This test sequence is a test ofendurance.

Test Sequence 4 This test sequence is a momentaryrating test. Other types of low volt-age circuit breakers are not subject-ed to this type of test and, therefore,have no full 30 cycle short time rat-ing.

Magnum DS circuit breakers can beused in forward or reverse feedapplications.

The standards outlined establishthe minimum requirements. Thereis nothing prohibiting a circuitbreaker design from exceedingstandards by offering additionalfeatures and/or higher levels of per-formance. Magnum DS does thisin a number of areas.

ANSI 37.50 TestingLow voltage power circuit breakerscan be applied at or below theirnameplate rating. That nameplaterating is a result of having success-fully completed a series of rigroustests. This is the 100% rating.

2-Step Stored EnergyMechanismMagnum DS circuit breakers areequipped with a 2-step stored ener-gy mechanism. The mechanismclosing springs can be chargedmanually or electrically, providingthe stored energy to CLOSE thebreaker. After the breaker is closed,the mechanism closing springs canagain be charged and the storedenergy mechanism allows thebreaker to OPEN – CLOSE – OPENwithout performing another charg-ing operation.

Main Contact SystemSingle Contact FingerThe performance characteristics ofthe Magnum DS air circuit breakerare primarily attributed to the con-tact design and its movement. Asingle contact finger is the focalpoint of the moving contact. Thissingle contact performs both themain and arcing contact functions

The maincontact portion can be viewed asthe “Heel” and the arcing portionthe “Toe.” Its movement is similarto the rocking of a foot forward andbackward from heel to toe and toeto heel. When the circuit breaker isclosed, the “Heel” (main contactportion) is in contact with the sta-tionary contact and carrying cur-rent. At the same time, the “Toe”(arcing contact portion) is separatedfrom the stationary arcing contact. A compact “C Loop” current pathpermits electromagnetic forces, pri-marily produced as a result of afault current, to supplement theclosing contact forces provided bythe operating mechanism. Thishelps to accomplish two importantthings:

Operating mechanism does nothave to be as large or heavy

Higher short time ratings (with-stand) are achievable

on different parts of the same fin-ger.

A complete movable contactassembly is merely a combinationof a number of single contact fin-gers. The exact number of contactfingers required depends upon theframe size and interrupting ratingof the circuit breaker.

The braided connectors (flexibleshunts) used to attach each contactfinger serve several important pur-poses:

Eliminate bolted joints reducinghot spots

Reduce required mounting spacefor primary contacts

Allow contact finger motion for“Heel - Toe” rocking

Integral Arc RunnerThe integral arc runner serves adual purpose:

Functions as circuit breaker fixedarcing contact

Functions as a critical part of thearc chute

contact fingers to a narrow, side-to-side ledge inside the arc cham-ber. When the contacts are in goodcondition, the narrow ledge is cov-ered by the back end of the con-tacts and not visible. When thenarrow ledge becomes visible withthe primary contacts closed, con-tact replacement is indicated.

Contact Wear Indicator A contact wear indicator providedfor each primary contact structurepermits their condition to be deter-mined. This is accomplished byviewing the contacts while in theclosed position only.

Manual OperationOn manually operated circuitbreakers, the closing spring ischarged manually. This is accom-plished through the use of the frontmounted spring-charge handle. Ittakes from 5 to 7 downward strokeson the handle to complete thecharging process.

Standard manually operated circuitbreakers are closed and opened byhand using the front mountedManual “ON” and Manual “OFF”buttons respectively. Access tothese buttons can be limited by theuse of an optional, padlockablecover. Complete access to the“ON” button can be prevented withan optional prevent close cover.Spring and primary contact statusindicator windows are located justabove the pushbuttons.

Optional electrically operateddevices are available to automati-cally close or trip open manuallyoperated circuit breakers, and arefield installable.

An optional motor operator is usedto charge the closing spring auto-matically. It can be field installed ina manually operated circuit breaker.Manual circuit breakers are pre-wired for this addition.

Electrical Operation The closing spring is charged auto-matically by the optional motor opera-tor. It can also be manually charged.

Manual “ON” and Manual “OFF” but-tons are also provided as describedunder manual operation.

Through the use of a mechanical anti-pump feature, an open circuit breakeronly accepts one attempt to recloseeven if the close command continues,preventing motor operator burnout.

A standard circuit breaker with electri-cal operation also has optional electri-cally operated devices available toautomatically close or trip open thecircuit breaker.

Breaker Secondary Connectors(Black)Magnum secondary connectorsprovide reliable low impedanceconnections for up to 60 terminalpoints of breaker control wiring.The secondary connectors are blackin color and consist of 2 blocks,each with 30 terminal points. Theterminals receive plug-in type pinand socket wire terminals. Terminalpoints have dedicated locations toreceive the breaker accessorydevices and to facilitate standard-ized automated testing of the con-trol wiring and accessories duringbreaker manufacturing. Labels areprovided on the blocks to assist thecustomer in terminal point identifi-cation and use.

The dedicated secondary connec-tors make it easy to add accessories(like shunt trips, spring releasedevices, etc.) to the breaker at thepoint of use with field option kits.Wiring removal from breaker sec-ondary connector is easily accom-plished using an extraction tool(AMP part number 305183).

Secondary Terminal Blocks(White)White secondary terminal blockscan be provided mounted at the topfront of the breaker for customeruse. The 6-point terminal blockshave hinged IP20 finger-proof cov-ers and are designed to terminatevarious customer wire terminalsincluding ring type terminals. Upto 72 terminal block points can beaccommodated for Standard andDouble frame breakers. Up to 48terminal block points can be accom-modated for Narrow Frame break-ers.

Wire kits and terminal block kits areavailable for use by the panelassembler to custom configure theblack breaker secondary connectorsto the white terminal blocks. As anoption, factory pre-wired cassettesare available for drawout circuitbreakers.

Digitrip RMSTrip Unit SummaryMagnum circuit breakers can useany one of a family of microproces-sor-based, true rms sensing DigitripRMS electronic trip units:

The trip units themselves are selfpowered; no external power isrequired to operate the protectivesystems. Current signal levels andthe control power are derived fromintegrally mounted torroidal woundcurrent sensors. The use of tor-roidal wound sensors reduces mag-netizing currents, resulting inimproved metered value accuracyover a broad range of sensor rat-ings.

Common FeaturesAll trip units have a green lightemitting diode (LED), labeledStatus, which blinks approximatelyonce each second to indicate thatthe trip unit is operating normally.This same Status LED will blink at afaster rate if the trip unit is in apick-up or overload condition.

Trip units are interchangeable inthe field, except for Model 520MCand Model 1150. Contact Cutler-Hammer for interchangeabilitydetails.

A functional local test of a major portion of every trip unit’s electron-ic circuitry and the circuit breaker’smechanical tripping action can beverified through the trip unit’s testreceptacle. Every test receptacle issupplied with a test receptaclecover. This is accomplished usinga Digitrip Test Kit which provides asecondary injection test. A smallhand held functional Test Kit canalso be used to check circuitry andmechanical tripping functions. Inaddition, the model 1150 trip unithas an integral testing system.

Rating PlugsAll Magnum DS circuit breaker tripunits use a fixed type rating plug.Rating plugs are available inampere ratings of 200 through 6000amperes. The current rating of therating plug must match the currentrating of the integrally mountedcurrent sensors. Therefore, thecontinuous current rating of the cir-cuit breaker cannot be changed byonly changing the rating plug.

The rating plug performs a numberof functions:

It tells the trip unit what the rat-ing is of the current sensors. Alabel on the rating plug clearlystates that the rating plug andcurrent sensors must have thesame rating.

It determines the maximuminstantaneous setting which is afunction of the current sensorrating.

Lifting the rating plug lid willexpose a small battery which sup-plies power for the trip unit’s causeof trip LEDs.

If the rating plug is removed fromthe trip unit, the circuit breaker willopen (trip) if it is carrying current.The rating plug should always besecured in position when the circuitbreaker is in use.

All trip unit models, except formodel 220, have red LEDs on theface of the trip unit to indicate thecause for an automatic trip opera-tion, for example earth fault, over-load or short circuit. They flash redto make the indication. A battery inthe trip unit maintains the trip indi-cation until the Reset/Battery Testbutton is pushed. The battery issatisfactory if its LED lights greenwhen the Battery Check button ispushed.

A clear, tamper-proof, plexiglasscover sits on the front of the circuitbreaker over the trip unit. Thiscover allows the settings to beviewed but not changed, except byauthorized personnel. The cover isheld in place by two cover screws.Security is insured by the insertionof a standard meter seal throughthe holes in both of the coverretention screws.

Potential Transformer (PT)ModuleThe PT module provides systemline voltage information to theDigitrip 1150 Trip Unit. It consists ofa 3-phase, 3-wire input and 3-wireoutput step down transformer witha wye to wye hookup. A white dis-connecting plug is provided to dis-connect the PT Module circuit fromthe line voltage during dielectrictesting.

The PT Module primary input volt-age connection is selected whenthe breaker is ordered to accommo-date normal or reverse feed appli-cation. PT Module line-side prload-side voltage connections are made viahard wire termination to the break-er upper or lower conductors.

The normal convention is that thebreaker line side is the upper con-ductors, with power flowingthrough the breaker from top tobottom. In reverse feed applica-tions, the bottom conductors arethe line side with power flowingthrough the breaker from bottom totop. In this case the trip unit willindicate REVERSE POWER, but thereading can be made an absolutevalue by installing a jumper fromB3 to B7 on the breaker secondarycontacts.

Current SensorToroidally wound current sensorsare installed at the rear of the cir-cuit breaker on the lower horizontalterminals. They are available inampere ratings of 200 through 6000amperes, and must match the cur-rent rating of the installed ratingplug.

The sensors produce an output cur-rent proportional to the load cur-rent. Under preselected conditionsof current magnitude and time, thesensors furnish the trip unit with asignal and the energy required toopen (trip) the circuit breaker.

The current rating of the installedsensors can be easily viewed fromthe rear of the circuit breakerthrough small viewing windows.The viewing windows are part ofthe sensor cover plate which isremoved to change the sensors.

Neutral current sensors are availablefor customer installation. The addi-tional sensor is not supplied with thecircuit breaker and must be orderedseparately. They are wired to the tripunit through the secondary contactson the circuit breaker.

Mechanical Trip Flag Pop-OutIndicatorThe mechanical trip flag pop-outindicator is an overcurrent indica-tion feature that can be supplied asan option on Magnum DS CircuitBreakers with integral trip units.This device is located just abovethe trip unit on the breaker’s frontfaceplate. In the event the trip unittrips the breaker on an overcurrentcondition, the red trip flag releasesand pops out to give local visualindication. This trip indication is inaddition to any LED trip indicationprovided by the trip unit.

The red flag can be reset by manu-ally pushing it back in. The circuitbreaker can be re-closed, even ifthe flag is not reset. An optionalOvercurrent Trip Switch (OTS) isavailable in the event that an elec-trical lock-out is required on anovercurrent trip condition.

Making Current ReleaseThe Making Current Release (MCR)is a standard safety feature provid-ed on all Magnum DS CircuitBreakers that are equipped withintegral trip units. The MCR pro-vides an instantaneous trip whenclosing on a fault current whichexceeds a specified magnitude.The MCR is non-adjustable, preset

to be closed into repeated overloadconditions, the breaker will trip insuccessively shorter times to allowfor the cooling of the load circuit.When the overload conditionreturns to normal, the LTM functionbegins to slowly reset and will fullyreset back to the normal LongDelay Time setting after about 10minutes, provided that anotheroverload is not experienced.

In some applications, for examplefire pumps, electric welders or dur-ing primary injection current test-ing, it may be desirable to defeatthe LTM. This can be accomplishedat the trip unitby moving a jumperlocated inside the cavity behind thetest port cover located at the frontof the trip unit to the Inactive posi-tion. The LTM can be reactivatedby returning the jumper to theActive position.

the trip unit trips the breakerinstantaneously. This allows thebreaker to be applied on a powerdistribution system with a 100kAavailable fault current while main-taining selectivity up to 85kA.

Long Time Memory (LTM)Long Time Memory (ThermalMemory) is a standard feature onMagnum DS Circuit Breakers sup-plied with integral trip units. Thethermal memory function providesovertemperature protection on loadcircuits against the effects ofrepeated overload conditions. If abreaker is closed soon after anoverload trip and the current againexceeds the Long Delay Setting,the LTM reduces the time to trip toallow for the fact that the load cir-cuit temperature is higher than nor-mal due to the previous overloadcondition. If the breaker continues

to trip the breaker when the peakinstantaneous current exceeds 25 xIn (In is established by the breaker’scurrent sensors and rating plug).

The MCR is enabled for only thefirst two cycles following the circuitbreaker closing operation. Whenthe MCR trips the breaker, the redtrip flag of the mechanical indicatorwill pop out and the redInstantaneous LED of the trip unitwill flash if the breaker is soequipped.

Bell Alarm/Overcurrent TripSwitch (OTS)The Bell Alarm/Overcurrent TripSwitch (OTS) is an overcurrent indi-cation feature that can be suppliedas an option on Magnum DS CircuitBreakers with integral trip units.The OTS is physically mounted onthe Mechanical Trip Flag Pop-outIndicator. The OTS Switch includes2 Form C contacts that are wired tothe breaker secondary terminals asshown in the Magnum DS breakerconnection diagram. These con-tacts are available for externalwiring to provide remote trip indi-cation or for electrical lock-out of acircuit breaker as required.

In the event the trip unit trips thebreaker on an overcurrent condi-tion, the red flag of the MechanicalTrip Flag Pop-ot Indicator releasesand pops out and the OTS contactschange state. The OTS Switch canbe reset by manually pushing inthe red trip flag. When the trip flagis reset, the OTS Switch contactsreturn to their normal state.

High Instantaneous TripMagnum DS Circuit Breakers thatare rated 100kA and manufacturedin the Standard Frame with 800 to3200 ampere continuous currentratings (MDSC08 to MDSC32) areequipped with a high instantaneoustrip. This instantaneous trip sys-tem consists of small air core sen-sors (one per phase) which pro-duce a signal and transmit it backto the trip unit. When the fault cur-rent approaches the 85kA with-stand rating of the circuit breaker,

Zone InterlockingZone Selective Interlocking is a standard feature provided onMagnum DS Circuit Breakers thatare supplied with Digitrip 520 orhigher trip units. The trip unitShort Time and Ground Fault TimeDelay Zone Interlock function iswired out to breaker secondary ter-minals B8 and B9 for customer use.

The zone interlock function pro-vides for hard-wired selective cir-cuit breaker coordination in thepower distribution system. Whenemployed, breaker secondary ter-minals B8 and B9 are connected toestablish zones of downstream andupstream breakers using 3 wires:Zin, Zout, and a common wire toestablish the zone.

NOTE: For detailed wiring dia-grams that describe zone selec-tive interlocking schemes andwiring connections, refer tothe trip unit instruction leaflet.

In the event that a fault current onthe system exceeds the trip unitShort Time or Ground Fault pick-upsettings or the Short Delay Setting2xIr is exceeded, the breaker near-est to the fault trips instantaneous-ly. At the same time the trip unitsends a logic signal to the connect-ed upstream trip unit to restrain itfrom tripping immediately and fol-low its protective delay settings.Coordination is maintained, thebreaker closest to the fault tripsfirst and power is only selectivelydisrupted.

NOTE: If zone interlocking isnot employed, it may bedefeated by installing a short-ing jumper across breaker sec-ondary terminals B8 and B9.

Installing a jumper in this mannerdefeats the zone interlock functionand tells the trip unit to follow itsset Short Time and Ground FaultTime protective delays. If breakersecondary terminals B8 and B9 areleft as open circuit, the trip unitShort Time and Ground Fault TimeDelay functions will trip instanta-neously if the system fault currentexceeds the pick up setting.

Over-Temperature TripMagnum DS Circuit Breakersequipped with integral trip unitshave an over-temperature trip func-tion provided as a standard feature.The over-temperature trip isdesigned to trip the breaker whenthe internal temperature of the tripunit exceeds 85°C. This is theapproximate manufacturer’s pub-lished maximum temperature rat-ing for the trip unit electronic com-ponents. An 85°C temperatureinside the trip unit indicates thatthere are much higher tempera-tures and potentially significantheating problems elsewhere in thecircuit breaker enclosure.

When the over-temperature func-tion trips the breaker, the red tripflag of the mechanical indicator willpop-out and the red Long TimeDelay LED of the trip unit will flashis the breaker is so equipped.

Ground Fault Provisions andProtective SchemesAs a standard feature, MagnumDS Circuit Breakers are internallywired with provisions for groundfault protection. However, groundfault protection is provided only ifthe breaker is equipped with a tripunit with optional LSIG protection.

Ground fault protection can be eas-ily added to breakers not originallyequipped with a ground fault tripunit. For example, an LSI trip unitcan simply be changed out with alike model trip unit that has LSIGprotection. Modifications to the cir-cuit breaker internal wiring are gen-erally not required as long as thetrip unit changeout is with a likemodel trip unit.

To provide for maximum applica-tion flexibility, breaker ground faultprovisions are wired out to thebreaker secondary terminals forexternal use. The secondary termi-nals can be easily configured toaccommodate the most commonground fault schemes, including:

Residual SensingResidual sensing is the standard or

default wiring configurations pro-vided. It is also the most commonmode of ground fault sensing usedin 3-pole and 4-pole breaker appli-cations. One current sensor perpole on each phase conductor isprovided internal to the circuitbreaker. When 3-pole breakers areapplied on 3 phase, 4 wire systems,an external sensor matched to thebreaker sensor ratio is mounted onthe Switchgear neutral bus andwired to the breaker secondarycontacts to connect all sensors inthe residual circuit.

Source Ground SensingSource ground sensing is common-ly found on 3 pole breakers appliedas a main breaker on single-endedradial or on double-ended systemswhere a mid-point grounding elec-trode is employed.

To configure a breaker for sourceground sensing, a shorting jumperis applied to breaker secondarycontacts B6 and B7 to defeat theresidual sensing mode. An exter-nal current sensor is mounteddirectly on the bonding conductorto ground to measure the groundcurrent flowing in the groundingelectrode conductor and all othergrounding conductors. The sensoris then wired to the breaker sec-ondary contacts B4 and B5.

NOTE: The secondary currentrating of the sensors must be1 ampere.

Zero Sequence SensingZero sequence sensing is appliedon main and feeder breakers, andother breakers employed in zoneinterlocking ground protectionschemes.

To configure a breaker for zerosequence sensing, a shortingjumper is applied to breaker sec-ondary contacts B6 and B7 todefeat the residual sensing mode.Zero sequence sensors with 1000:1and 100:1 ratios are available formounting in the switchgear cablecompartment. The sensor internalwindow dimensions are 4.5 x 13.5inches (114 x 342 mm) for accom-modating power cables. The zerosequence sensors are wired tobreaker secondary contacts B4 andB5.

Fixed Mounted Circuit BreakersMagnum DS fixed mounted circuitbreakers are commonly applied inCutler-Hammer Pow-R-Line CUL891 certified switchboards andother specialty power distributionenclosures and switchboards man-ufactured by OEMs.

The fixed circuit breaker construc-tion is simple and economicbecause there are no drawout sys-tem components. The breakerbolts directly to the enclosure mainbus, which allows for efficient cur-rent transfer under loaded condi-tions. This improves thermal man-agement and provides for thedesign of compact enclosures withshallow depth.

Full visual and physical access tothe circuit breaker trip unit, con-trols, and indicators is availablethrough the compartment frontpanel. A door frame andescutcheon kit is available as anoption to provide a finished trim tothe front panel cutout. Extensiveaccessorization capability of thebreaker is retained, including tripunits, internal accessories, lock-offdevices, and mechanical interlocks.

Primary TerminationsHorizontal pre-drilled terminal padsare provided as a standard featurefor use in terminating the breakerto the enclosure bus. Optional ver-tical adapters can be factoryinstalled or are available as fieldoption kits to provide the capabilityto terminate the enclosure bus inthe vertical plane. Field option kitsare also available for front connect-ed applications.

Secondary ConnectionsTwo black 30-pin AMP connectorblocks are located at the top frontof the breaker to receive up to 60points of external secondarywiring. A secondary connectionterminal kit is included with eachfixed breaker to provide for severalwiring options.

The most economic solution is toterminate external wiring directly tothe black AMP connector blocks.

Drawout Circuit BreakersMagnum DS drawout circuit break-ers are commonly applied in Cutler-Hammer Magnum DS UL1558 certi-fied switchgear and other specialtypower distribution enclosures,switchgear and switchboards man-ufactured by OEMs.

The Magnum DS drawout circuitbreaker construction is a through-the-door design. Full visual andphysical access to the trip unit andall breaker controls and indicatorsis available through the compart-ment front panel. For maximumsafety, circuit breaker levering canbe performed with the compart-ment door closed. When the circuitbreaker is in the OPEN position, apadlockable access door can beraised to receive the leveringdevice. No special device isrequired. Levering can be accom-plished with a common 3/8 inchsize square drive and rachet. Wheninserted, the levering device holdsthe levering access door open. Aslong as the access door is raisedopen, the breaker is held in the“trip-free” condition. The breakercan be levered to three positions inthe cell compartment. Color codedposition indicators are provided onthe breaker front panel to providepositive indication of each position:

The cassette's drawout extensionrails can be padlocked to prevent acircuit breaker from being insertedduring maintenance periods. Inaddition, the cassette includes allrequired safety interlocks whichfunction with the circuit breaker'sinterlock system to insure safeoperation.

An arc hood is positioned abovewhere the circuit breaker's arcchutes will be allowing for zeroclearance mounting when verticallystacked in an assembly. Mountingholes are provided at the rear andin the floor of the cassette forsecure mounting in an assembly.

Drawout CassetteA drawout circuit breaker is used incombination with a fixed drawoutcassette. The cassette provides forall the required fixed drawout fea-tures as well as fixed primary andsecondary connections. Mountinglocations for cell (TOC) switches,primary safety shutters and variouskey interlocks are part of the cas-sette design.

Cutler-Hammer offers several dra-wout cassette options. The nar-row frame circuit breakermates only with the Narrowcassette which has built in hori-zontal stabs and primary terminals.Optional bolt-on 90 degreeadapters are available to rotate theprimary terminals on the rear of thecassette to a vertical orientation;these can be used on either theline, load or both primary connec-tions.

Standard frame circuit break-ers also offer two optional dra-wout cassettes. Both use verticalstabs internal to the cassette. TheUniversal cassette offers a flatterminal pad on the rear of the cas-sette which will accept customerbus bar connections in various bentconfigurations; optional T-baradapters are available which can berotated to give either vertical orhorizontal terminals. The Basiccassette has a molded back planewith vertical aperturers that can beused when the bus bar connectionswill remain vertical. The OEM cansimply continue bus bar throughthe openings in the back plane toform stabs for the circuit breaker.Note that these stabs must be sil-ver-plated. Optionally, Cutler-Hammer will supply short straightpieces which are pre-plated, andwill bolt into the back plane toaccept bolted bus bar connections.

It should be noted that short circuitcurrents create very large EMforces on the bus bars which mustbe adequately supported by theassembly builder. Outline draw-ings for each cassette give mini-mum distances from the rear of the

Phasing on Double-Wide FrameBreakersMagnum DS circuit breakers man-ufactured in the double-wide framehave two available phasing config-urations which must be confirmedwhen the breaker is ordered.

The phasing convention is deter-mined facing the front of the break-er from left to right. For 4-poleapplications, the neutral is locatedon the left and is rated 100% of thebreaker continuous current rating.The following phasing configura-tions are available:

AABBCC phasing is the conventioncommonly used in Cutler-HammerPow-R-Line C Switchboards usingMagnum DS Circuit Breakers.

The AABBCC convention is recom-mended for most OEMs manufac-turing their own power distributionenclosures. It is ideal for applica-tions where the breaker is mountedsingle high (one breaker in a struc-ture).

ABCABC or NNABCABCPhasing

ABCABC phasing is the conventioncommonly used in Cutler-HammerMagnum DS UL1558 Switchgear.Double-wide breakers with thistype of phasing are designed toaccommodate 2 sets of vertical ris-ers in the same structure. This pro-vides for significant space savingsbecause two or more standardframe feeder breakers can bemounted above or below the dou

Unless otherwisestated, they are all consideredoptional devices in the sense thatthey are not provided as standardon a manually operated circuitbreaker. Available accessories areidentified here and discussed ingeneral terms. For more detailedinformation and/or installationinstructions, refer to individualinstruction leaflets dedicated to theaccessories.

Magnum DS circuit breaker acces-sories are designed to fit all framesizes. The accessories fall into oneof three categories:

• Plug-in electrical• Internal electrical• Mechanical

Plug-In Electrical Accessories There are four Magnum DS Plug-Inelectrical accessories. Three can beviewed for identification by nameand rating through viewing win-dows located in the right front ofthe circuit breaker(Figure 1). Allfour are plug-in type and can befactory installed or field installedusing a UL listed kit.

The four Plug-In accessories are:

• Shunt Trip (ST)• Spring Release (SR)• Undervoltage Release (UVR)• Auxiliary Switch

Shunt Trip (ST) - The ST (ShuntTrip Device, Figures 2 and 3) is anoptional accessory device that ismounted internal to the circuitbreaker. The ST acts to electricallyopen the circuit breaker when itstrip coil is energized by a rated tripvoltage signal (Table 1) that isapplied through the breaker sec-ondary contacts, typically by a con-trol switch or other similar device.The ST has a dedicated auxiliaryswitch with contacts that changestate as the breaker opens, cuttingoff trip voltage signal to the tripcoil.

• Latch Check Switch WiredFor External Use - The LCS canalso be wired to the breaker sec-ondary contacts. One Form Ccontact is provided for remoteindication that the breaker isready to close for use in breakerexternal customer control wiring.

Undervoltage Release - Theundervoltage release is an optionaldevice on both manually and elec-trically operated circuit breakers(Figure 5). It opens the circuitbreaker when its supply voltagefalls to between 35-60% of ratedvoltage. If the release is not ener-gized to 85% of its supply voltage,the circuit breaker cannot be closed electrically or manually(Table 3).

Latch Check Switch (LCS) - TheLCS (Latch Check Switch) is anoptional accessory switch mountedinternal to the circuit breaker thatchanges state when the breaker isready to close (the closing springsare fully charged and trip latch is inthe reset position). The LCS is veryuseful in fast transfer and automat-ic transfer applications when it isimportant that the breakerresponds to close on a single closevoltage signal of rated magnitude.The LCS is available in two ver-sions:

• Latch Check Switch Wired ToSpring Release - The LCS canbe wired directly to the SpringRelease Device to provide a con-tact closure when the breaker isready to close. This delays thevoltage signal to the SpringRelease until the breaker is readyto close.

Spring Release (SR) - The SR(Spring Release Device, Figure 4) isan optional accessory device that ismounted internal to the circuitbreaker. The SR acts to electricallyclose the circuit breaker when itsclose coil is energized by a ratedclose voltage signal (Table 2)applied through the breaker sec-ondary contacts, typically by a con-trol switch or other similar device.

The breaker must be ready to closefor the SR to close the circuit break-er. The breaker stored energysprings must be fully charged andthe trip latch must be in the reset(not the trip) position. If the closevoltage signal is applied beforethese two conditions are met, theSR will not close the circuit breaker.The close voltage signal must beremoved and then reapplied at atime when the breaker is ready toclose.

Auxiliary Switch - An auxiliaryswitch is an optional accessorydevice that is mounted internal tothe circuit breaker. Each auxiliaryswitch stage (Figure 7) has 2a (nor-mally open) and 2b (normallyclosed) contacts wired to the break-er secondary contacts for customeruse in remote indication or externalelectrical schemes. (See Table 4for auxiliary switch contact ratings.)The contacts change state as thebreaker opens and closes.

A maximum of 3 switch stages of2a/2b contacts can be mounted inMagnum Standard and DoubleFrame Circuit Breakers for a total of6a and 6b available contacts. Ifmore than two switch stages arerequired on the Narrow FrameBreaker, refer the application toCutler-Hammer. Due to the 48point secondary terminal block lim-itation on the Narrow FrameBreaker, only 2 stages of 2a/2b con-tacts can be mounted if the fullcompliment of breaker internalaccessories are employed.However, if the breaker is not fullyaccessorized, the Narrow FrameBreaker can accommodate 3 auxil-iary switch stages of 2a/2b con-tacts.

Internal Electrical AccessoriesOther electrical accessories aremounted inside the circuit breaker.They can be factory or siteinstalled. There are two differentinternally mounted accessories:

• Overcurrent Trip Switch (BellAlarm)

• Motor Operator

Overcurrent Trip Switch (BellAlarm) - An overcurrent trip switch(bell alarm) is an optional device(Figure 8). It provides an electricalindication when a circuitbreaker trips as a result of the tripunit reacting to an overcurrent con-dition. Opening as a result of a cir-cuit breaker’s manual open button,shunt trip or undervoltage releasedoes not cause the overcurrent tripswitch to operate. The overcurrenttrip switch has (2a 2b) Form C con-tacts (Table 4).

The status of the contacts changewhen the trip indicator pops out.This permits the switch to be usedas an alarm or in conjunction with aspring release to block a subse-quent remote electrical closing sig-nal.

Motor Operator - A Motor opera-tor is an electric motor assemblyinternally mounted in the circuitbreaker (Figures 9 and 10). Itcharges the closing springs electri-cally for remote or local operation.The motor operator can be factoryor site installed (Table 5).

To convert a manually operated cir-cuit breaker to an electrically oper-ated circuit breaker, a UL listedmotor operator kit is available.

Spring Charged Indication -Spring charged indication is avail-able on Magnum DS circuit break-ers that are equipped with motoroperators. The motor operator cir-cuit includes a motor cut-off switchthat changes state at the end of theclosing spring charging cycle. Thecut-off contact is wired to breakersecondary contact terminal pointsB14 and B15 for remote indicationand customer use in externalbreaker control schemes.

Mechanical Accessories

There are six optional mechanicaltype accessories:

Operations Counter - The opera-tions counter is a mechanicaldevice used to provide a record ofthe number of circuit operations. Itis mounted in the lower right por-tion of the circuit breaker and canbe viewed through the front cover(Figure 11).

Cassette Safety Shutters -Automatically operated insulatingtype safety shutters are availablefor use with the drawout cassette.When the drawout circuit breaker islevered from the CONNECT posi-tion, the shutters automaticallyclose to cover the fixed primarycontacts (Figure 12). When the cir-

Door Escutcheon - The doorescutcheon is a molded frame usedto seal the space between the cir-cuit breaker and the compartmentdoor cutout. It is supplied with amounting gasket (Figure16).

IP54 Cover - A hinged domeshaped waterproof cover attachesto the metal compartment door toprovide waterproof protection forthe circuit breaker (Figure 17).

Cassette Cell Switch - The cas-sette cell switch (Figures 14 and15) is also known as the cell posi-tion switch or the TOC (TruckOperated Cell) switch. The cellswitch is an optional accessory thatis provided in kit form for installa-tion by the panel assembler. Up to3 cell switch stages, each with 4Form C contacts can be mountedon the right hand side of the cas-sette. (See Table 4 for cell switchcontact ratings.) One stage can bemounted on each of the DISCON-NECT, TEST, or CONNECT mount-ing locations on the cassette. Theswitch contacts change state whenthe breaker is levered into the DIS-CONNECT, TEST, or CONNECTpositions. Wires are provided foreach set of Form C contacts for ter-mination to the breaker secondaryterminal blocks (white) or othercustomer supplied terminal blocksin the breaker cell compartment.The contacts are generally used forremote indication or for customeruse in external breaker controlschemes.

Mechanical Interlock - A familyof mechanical interlocks are avail-able to interlock the closing of twoor three Magnum circuit breakers.The mechanical interlock holds oneor more circuit breakers tripped(prevents closure) when others areclosed. A lever assembly is mount-ed on each breaker which inter-faces with the pole shaft and thetripper bar. The lever assembliesare interconnected with eithercables or rods, depending upon therelative orientation of the breakers.Rods can be used only when thecircuit breakers to be interlockedare vertically stacked. Cables canbe used for any orientation of thebreakers. Mechanical interlocks areavailable for both fixed and dra-wout circuit breakers and in both 2-way and 3-way versions. An illus-tration of a 2-way cable interlockmounted on two drawout circuitbreakers is shown in Figure 18. Inaddition, refer to Table 6 for thepossible mechanical interlock con-figurations.

Breaker Lock OFF DevicesMagnum DS Circuit Breakersare equipped with a variety oflock off devices for both theCircuit Breaker and the DrawoutCassette to maximize safety duringequipment operation and mainte-nance.

Padlockable Levering DeviceAccess Door - The leveringDevice access door includes pad-lock provisions as a standard fea-ture on all drawout circuit breakers.It is designed to receive a padlockup to 0.312 inches (8 mm) in diam-eter. When the access door is pad-locked shut, the breaker leveringtool cannot be inserted, preventingthe breaker from being levered toanother position (Figure 1).

Access Door - The padlockablepushbutton cover is an optionalfactory configured or field optionkit accessory that mounts on thebreaker faceplate. It is availablewith either molded plastic or metalframes with clear plastic hingedblocking plates (Figure 2). Whenthey are closed and padlocked, theblocking plates prevent access tothe breaker PUSH OFF and PUSHON mechanical pushbuttons. Thisdevice can also be configured withan additional plate to block only thePUSH ON pushbutton. A smallhole is pre-drilled in the blockingplates to provide emergency accesswith a special tool as required perthe National Electric Code. The

Cassette Shutter LockProvisions - As a standard fea-ture, the narrow frame cassetteshutter system includes provisionsto padlock the shutter in theCLOSED position when the breaker iswithdrawn. The shutter lock provi-sions will receive a padlock with upto a 0.312 inches (8 mm) diameter.

Breaker OFF Key LockProvisions - The breaker OFF keylock is an optional accessory thatallows the breaker to be locked inthe OFF position with the keyremoved, preventing the breakerfrom being closed. It is primarilyintended for use on fixed mountedcircuit breakers, but can also beapplied on drawout breakers(Figure 3).

When selected as a factory config-ured option, the breaker includes apre-drilled hole covered with aplastic cap on the breaker frontcover. A lock provisions hardwarekit is shipped with the breaker tofacilitate installation of a singleKirk, Castell or Ronis cylinder lock.The cylinder lock is generally pro-vided and assembled to the breakerat the point of use by the enclosuremanufacturer or customer. Forexisting breakers, a breaker keylock provisions field option kit isalso available. To facilitate installa-tion, a drill point mark is located onthe inside of the breaker frontcover to identify the drilling loca-tion for the key lock installation.

Cassette Lock Provisions - Thecassette lock provisions field optionkit is an accessory that mounts onthe side of a circuit breaker cas-sette (Figure 4). The customer

Altitude Rating Factors

Magnum DS circuit breakers can beapplied at their full voltage and cur-rent ratings up to a maximum alti-tude of 2000 meters above sealevel. When installed at higher alti-tudes, the ratings are subject to cor-rection factors. Short circuit cur-rent is not affected as long as thevoltage is rated in accordance withthe table.

Maintenance OverviewDesign tests and actual installationexperience shows the Magnum DSlow voltage circuit breaker to havedurability well beyond minimumstandards requirements. However,because of the variability of appli-cation conditions, inspection andmaintenance activities should takeplace on a regularly scheduledbasis.

These circuit breakers are designedto be relatively maintenance free.The maintenance consists mainlyof keeping them clean. Cleaningand preventive measures are partof any good maintenance program.Plant operating and local condi-tions can vary to such an extentthat the actual schedule should betailored to the conditions.Maintenance record sheets shouldbe completed each time mainte-nance is performed. Careful andaccurate documentation of mainte-nance activities provides a valuablehistorical reference on equipmentcondition over time.

General CleaningCircuit breaker cleaning should bepart of an overall maintenance pro-gram that includes the assembly inwhich the circuit breaker is

When theinspection is complete, the circuitbreaker can be levered to the TESTposition to check any electricaloperations of the circuit breaker.During movement of the circuitbreaker out of and back into itscompartment, be alert for any signsindicating improper operation.

During the inspection of fixed typecircuit breakers, bus systems sup-plying the circuit breakers shouldbe de-energized for convenienceand safety.

Once the circuit breaker has beencleaned, visually inspect it for anysigns of damage, missing or looseparts and unusual wear. On dra-wout circuit breakers, inspect theprimary disconnect finger clustersfor signs of wear and erosion.Make appropriate corrections foranything found out of order.

The trip unit can also be functionallytested during this general inspec-tion.

Arc Chute When the circuit breaker experi-ences a high level fault or duringregularly scheduled maintenanceperiods, arc chambers and theirenclosed arc chutes should beinspected for any kind of damageor dirt. Be especially alert for signsof erosion of the V-shaped platesinside the arc chutes.

Primary Contacts Since the arc chutes are removed,this is an ideal time to inspect pri-mary contacts for wear using thecircuit breaker’s contact wear indica-tors. Visually inspect each primarycontact structure for signs of wearand/or damage. This inspection isconducted with the circuit breakerclosed. Look straight down into thearc chamber when observing theclosed contacts. If the contactsshow unacceptable wear as indicat-ed by the contact wear indicator dis-cussed earlier in this document, thecontacts should be replaced.

Unless otherwise indicated,never use high pressure blowingair, since dirt or foreign objects canbe driven into areas, such as theoperating mechanism. Never use awire brush to clean any part of thecircuit breaker.

When to inspectDo not wait for specific scheduledperiods to visually inspect theequipment, if there are earlieropportunities. For this type ofequipment, it is recommended thata general inspection and lubrica-tion take place after the number ofoperations listed in the “InspectionFrequency” table. This type ofgeneral inspection should also takeplace at the end of the first sixmonths of service, even if the num-ber of operations indicated in thetable has not been reached.

After the first inspection, inspect atleast once a year. If these recom-mended inspections show no main-tenance requirements, the periodcan be extended to a more eco-nomical point. Conversely, if therecommended inspection shows,for instance, a heavy accumulationof dirt or other foreign matter thatmight cause mechanical, electricalor insulation damage, the inspec-tion and maintenance intervalshould be decreased.

What To InspectWhat to inspect and to what extentis dictated by the nature of themaintenance function. Routineinspections require one type ofobservation. Inspections followinga known high level fault requiremore detailed inspections. Wheninspections are complete, be cer-tain that any parts removed duringthe inspection process are properlyput back in place.

General Circuit Breaker A drawout type circuit breakershould first be withdrawn from its

offer 60 front mounted dedicatedsecondary wiring points, each wiringpoint having finger safe contacts toIP20 and shall allow no more thantwo wires per terminal.

The Torroidal Current Sensors, foruse with the trip units, shall bemounted at the rear of the circuitbreaker and shall have a back coverwindow that will permit viewing thecurrent sensor rating on the back ofthe breaker. A front of breakermounted trip unit will have a RatingPlug which will offer indication ofthe actual sensor rating on the frontof the Trip Unit.

On Drawout type Circuit Breakers,the Racking-in device shall bemounted integral to the breaker.This mechanism will be located onthe front of the breaker. A breakerposition indicator shall be locatedon the faceplate of the breaker. Thisindicator shall offer clear color indi-cation of the breaker position in thecassette. These positions shall be‘Connected’ (Red), ‘Test’ (Yellow)and ‘Disconnected’ (Green). Theracking-in door shall be interlockedso that when the breaker is in theclosed position, the breaker racking-in door shall not open. As a safetyfeature the breaker spring mecha-nism shall discharge as the breakeris withrawn from the ‘Connected’ tothe ‘Disconnected’ position.

On Drawout type Circuit Breakers,the finger clusters shall withdrawwith the breaker for safe and easyinstallation.

All Power Circuit Breakers shall bedesigned, manufactured and test-ed in accordance with ANSIC37.13, C37.16, C37.17, C37.50, UL1066 and NEMA SG-3 Standards.To verify this, the circuit breakershall carry a UL label.

Circuit breakers shall be Cutler-Hammer Magnum type orapproved equal.

[24V/dc] [48Vdc] [110/125Vdc][220/250Vdc] motor operators,①[OPEN/CLOSE pushbuttons] [con-trol switch] plus a red and greenindicating flag to indicate breakercontact position. ①[DC source shallbe supplied from a remote batterysystem] [AC source shall be takenfrom a (remote source) (controlpower transformer internal to thetrol switch] plus a red and greenindicating flag to indicate breakercontact position. ①[DC source shallbe supplied from a remote batterysystem] [AC source shall be takenfrom a (remote source) (controlpower transformer internal to theswitchgear assembly)]. The charg-ing time of the motor shall notexceed 10 seconds.

The symmetrical interruptingcapacity and short time currentratings respectively at 240, 480and 600VAC shall be: ①[42/42kA][65/65kA] [85/85kA][100/85kA][100/100kA].

To facilitate lifting, the Power CircuitBreaker shall have integral handleson the side of the unit, and shallhave optional lifting brackets avail-able for hoisting.

The Primary contacts of the unitshall have an easily accessibleContact Wear Indicator to indicatemain contact erosion.

The Power Circuit Breaker shallhave a trip flag pop-out indicator toconfirm an overcurrent trip signal.The trip flag shall not be interlockedto the breaker reset to facilitateremote reset of the breaker.

The Power Circuit Breaker shall havethree windows in the front cover tooffer clear indication of closing oropening electrical accessories thatare mounted in the breaker. Eachaccessory will have a label to indi-cate its function and voltage. Theaccessories shall be plug and locktype to allow easy field installation.They shall be modular in design andshall be common to all frame sizesand ratings.

Power Circuit BreakersAll protective devices shall be lowvoltage ①[drawout ] [fixed] typepower circuit breakers. The breakershall be available in two physicalframe sizes covering current ratingsfrom 800-5000 amperes. They shallhave a common height and depthacross the range. All breakers shallbe suitable for application in theirintended enclosures for 100% oftheir continuous ampere ratingassuming an enclosure.

All breakers shall be equipped witha true, two step stored energymechanism providing a maximum5 cycle closing. All the energy forclosing the breaker shall be storedand held in readiness pending arelease to close action. Manuallyoperated breakers shall be convert-ible to electrical operation by fieldfitting of an internally mountedmotor operator. Both manual andelectrically operated breakers shallhave multiple charge/close provi-sions providing the following possi-ble sequence: charge-close-recharge-open-close-open. As asafety feature, provisions shall beavailable to manually discharge thestored energy without closing thebreaker. Anti-pump provisions shallbe provided as standard.

The breaker shall be manuallyoperated unless electrical operationis indicated on the drawings. Thecircuit breaker control face plateshall include color coded visualindicators to indicate contact OPEN(green) and CLOSED (red) positionsas well as mechanism CHARGED(yellow) and DISCHARGED (white)positions. Manual control pushbut-tons on the breaker face shall beprovided for opening and closingthe circuit breaker.

The Power Circuit Breaker shallhave a “positive on” feature. Thecontact position flag will read“CLOSED” if the contacts havebeen welded.

(V) The Trip Unit shall be capableof monitoring the following data :
