SEEING RED: Following their 10-2 victory over the Reds
yesterday, the Dodgers look to record their sixth sweep of the year
and a season series sweep over Cincinnati (5-0) in the series finale
this afternoon. Los Angeles, which is currently 4-1 in its six-game
Ohio road trip, is tied with Arizona for second place in the National
League West, 1.0 game back of the Colorado Rockies for first place
and the best record in the National League. Following today’s
contest, Los Angeles begins a nine-game homestand tomorrow
against the New York Mets (4), Rockies (3) and Angels (2).
According to Stats LLC., since the 2015 season the
Dodgers’ 16-3 (.842) overall record against the Reds ranks
the third best in the National League amongst NL
matchups, trailing just the Mets’ 13-0 record against
Cincinnati and the Rockies’ 12-2 mark (.857) against the
Braves. Los Angeles has now won six consecutive games
over Cincinnati.
With the win today, the Dodgers will sweep the season
series over the Reds, which will be the first time the club
has accomplished such a feat since 2006, when the club
also took all six-games against Cincinnati.
Los Angeles is now 18-6 (.725) when facing the National
League Central this season, which is the best winning
percentage in the big leagues against that division.
The Dodgers lead the National League with a +97 run
differential, third in the Majors behind the Yankees (+109)
and Astros (+107).
The Dodgers are 15-7 (.682) in day games this season,
which is the third-best day winning percentage in baseball,
trailing just Colorado (.724) and Houston (.700).
HOMER HAPPY: The Dodgers recorded four home runs in
yesterday’s contest, which included Dodger rookie Cody Bellinger
blasting his team-leading 19th home run of the season with a two-run
shot in the third inning. Bellinger is currently tied for third in the
Majors in longballs, while trailing only the Yankees’ Aaron Judge
(23) and the Brewers’ Eric Thames (20) for the league lead. His club-
leading 43 RBI are also tied for 16th in the National League. Bellinger
becomes just the second player in Major League history to hit 19
homers in his first 49 career big league games, joining New York
Yankees’ backstop Gary Sanchez (2015-16).
Not to go unnoticed, Dodger outfielders Yasiel Puig and
Joc Pederson also went deep in yesterday’s contest. Puig
slugged two home runs with solo shots in the sixth and
eighth innings, as he recorded his third career multi-homer
game (last: April 6 vs. San Diego). Pederson hit a home run
in his second straight game, crushing a solo homer in the
third inning for his fourth longball of the year.
Bellinger and Pederson recorded the teams fourth back-to-
back home runs this season in the third inning yesterday,
which is tied for seventh most in the Majors.
MAEKEN MADNESS: Dodger right-hander Kenta Maeda will
look to rebound, as he will make a spot start today for his 11th start
of the season. In 11 games (10 starts) this year, Maeda has gone 4-3
with one save while posting a 4.95 ERA (31 ER/56.1 IP) and striking
out 59 batters against just 17 walks. Maeda last pitched on June 9
against the Reds, recording the save in his first career relief
appearance, and last started on June 4 at Milwaukee, allowing just
two runs on two hits to record the loss in the Dodgers’ 3-0 defeat.
In his last six starts, Maeda has gone 3-1 with a 3.51 ERA
(13 ER/33.1 IP) and has held the opposition to a .215 batting
average. He has struck out 34 batters against 12 walks in
33.1 innings, while posting a 1.14 WHIP.
#VOTE BLUE: MLB revealed its third All-Star balloting update
and Corey Seager is now running second in votes behind
Cincinnati’s Zack Cozart at shortstop. Seager is vying to be the first
Dodger shortstop to start in the All-Star Game since Bill Russell in
1980. Fans are encouraged to #VoteBlue at Dodgers.com/Vote
Seager reached base safely in all five plate appearances
yesterday, which ties for the most in his career (last: Aug.
22, 2016 at CIN), going 2-for-2 with two runs, one double,
one RBI and three walks. His 49 runs scored are tied for
fifth in the NL and he also ranks among the league leaders
in doubles (18, T-6th), walks (43, T-5th) and OBP (.395,
11th).
SIMPLY THE BEST: The Dodgers continue to lead the Majors
with a 3.33 team ERA, a 1.15 WHIP, and a .230 opponents’ batting
average while leading the NL in strikeouts (651).
The Los Angeles bullpen leads the NL with a 2.94 ERA (76
ER/233.0 IP), a 1.09 WHIP (1st MLB) and 272 strikeouts.
The leader of that ‘pen, Kenley Jansen recorded his 14th
save on Friday as he struck out the side in the ninth. He
currently ranks fourth among NL relievers with a 0.94 ERA
and also ranks fourth in saves. He has struck out 48 of the
104 batters he’s faced this year without issuing a walk, as
he continues to extend his MLB record for most strikeouts
to open a season without a walk (Source: Elias Sports
Bureau).
ZERO SUM GAME: Dodger right-handed reliever Pedro Báez
allowed just one hit in a scoreless inning of relief yesterday, lowering
his ERA to 0.91 (3 ER/29.2 IP), which is the third best mark in the
NL among relievers and ranks fifth in the Majors. Pat Neshek (0.69)
and Felipe Rivero (0.72) are the only NL pitchers with better ERAs
than Báez. The right-hander last gave up a run on May 21 vs. Miami
and since then has tossed 11.1 consecutive scoreless frames (11
games), while striking out 11 and walking just two.
THANKS POPS!: Today, the Dodgers will join all of Major League
Baseball in celebrating Father’s Day and participating in the fight
against prostate cancer. Players will sport specialty jerseys, caps and
socks in addition to wristbands and the symbolic blue ribbon on their
jerseys. MLB will donate all royalty payments from the sale of the
specialty caps and jerseys to the Prostate Cancer Foundation and
Stand Up To Cancer. For the first time on Father’s Day, a specially-
stitched baseball made by Rawlings matching the color theme of the
uniforms will be used in today’s games only.
DON’T MISS OUT: Following today’s game, the Dodgers will
head home and begin a nine-game homestand Monday against the
Mets and the club will have full-stadium giveaways for six of its nine
games - a Brooklyn Cap presented by Bank of America (June 19 vs.
Mets), a Tote Bag presented by MLB Network (June 20 vs. Mets),
Andre Ethier Bobblehead Night presented by Emirates (June 21 vs.
Mets), a beach towel presented by ampm (June 24 vs. Rockies), a
Kirk Gibson 1988 World Series Coin presented by 76 (June 26 vs.
Angels) and a Clayton Kershaw jersey t-shirt presented by Farmer
John (June 27 vs. Angels).
REMEMBERING A CLASSIC: On this date three years ago,
Clayton Kershaw tossed his first-career no-hitter in the Dodgers’ 8-
0 win over the Rockies at Dodger Stadium. Kershaw allowed just
one baserunner (via error) and struck out 15, the most ever by a
pitcher in Major League history that did not allow a runner to reach
base via hit, walk or hit by pitch.
