Welcome Good evening from the Fantas c

Media Welfare Ground, Emley. May

I extend a very warm welcome to

the management, players and sup-

porters from our near neighbours

from Penistone Church.

It is with sadness we announce the

death of one of our longest and

most loyal supporters, Mervin Rob-

inson. Merv a:ended the last Satur-

day home game and was in fine

voice. I received a phone call from

his daughter last Friday aJernoon

to tell me that he had passed away

at his home in Marsden. To say it

came as a shock is an understate-

ment. Merv was due to be on the

coach to Knaresborough for our last

league fixture.

The funeral details, when we know

them, will be on the club website

and also in the Huddersfield Exam-

iner. I hope as many friends and

supporters will be able to a:end

and give him a good send off. Can I

ask everyone in the ground tonight

to respect a minutes silence in hon-

our of Merv’s life. The silence will

start and finish on the Referees

whistle. Thank you.

Tonight is the first of two Play Off

Semi-Finals. This is history in the

making, the first me the Play-Offs

have been factored into the NCEL

programme. Up to a couple of

weeks ago, 9 teams were s ll

in with a shout of automa c pro-

mo on, or through the play offs. I

feel this has been a good move by

the League. In the past the big mon-

ey teams have walked away with

promo on, now it gives everyone a

chance to make the Premier Divi-

sion.

So who will it be come Saturday

evening; Emley, Penistone, Hallam

or Bo:esford liJing the trophy and

entry to the promised land? Good

luck to everyone involved and may

the best team win (not always the

case).

Thanks to everyone involved with

our club for all the help and assis-

tance through the season. Thanks

also to our sponsors, without

whom, our club would not survive.

Our End of Season presenta on

night will be on Friday 13th May in

the Sports Bar. I hope as many of

you as can will be able to a:end.

Can we really get behind the boys

tonight.

Thanks

Mr C

VOLUNTEERS

Catering volunteer(s) wanted

The club would like to hear from anyone who might like to join the catering team at AFC Emley as a volunteer.

You don't have to be available for every home game (unless you want to!) but we occa-sionally require an extra pair of hands to cover for one of the exis(ng team when they are unavailable.

This could be helping prepare food for hospitality, cooking the post-match players' food or serving in the popular tea bar.

No experience is necessary and full training will be given. We recently achieved a 4-star ra(ng from Kirklees Council and we're aiming to reach the top 5-star band as soon as possible.

This might suit someone in the village looking to help at the club or the other half of a supporter or maybe a young person looking for work experience. No ma.er, we'd make you feel part of the team quickly!

To find out more and have an informal chat about what is involved, please contact Jayne Loveday or Chris(ne Pe3nger at the tea bar on a match day or call 07792 107598 (Jayne), / 07913 209606 (Chris(ne).

MERV ROBINSON It was with great sadness when Chairman Nigel Wakefield was in-formed on Friday April 22

nd that long standing supporter and club

member, Merv Robinson, had passed away peacefully in the early hours.

Merv had attended the previous Saturday’s home fixture against Ec-cleshill and was planning to be on the coach to Knaresborough for the last match of the regular season.

Merv’s daughter will contact Nigel with the funeral arrangements and these will be published on the clubs web site.

Treasurer, Ian Steele, worked alongside Merv at ICI in the mid 90’s.

Page 7: Match Day Programme - AFC Emley v Penistone Church

A few weeks ago Emley were aiming for automa(c promo(on but an end to their 23

league game unbeaten run when losing 0 - 1 at Selby (failing to score for the first (me

this season in all compe((ons) and whilst a last minute penalty salvaged a 1 - 1 draw

at home to Eccleshill last Saturday they will now finish a highest ever posi(on of 4th.

On Wednesday night they were at home to Bo.esford in a high profile game in which

the winner would, in all likelihood finish 3rd

, Emley were confident having won 7 - 0 on

Monday night at bo.om of the table Worsbrough Bridge.

Emley went behind to an early goal and their problems were compounded by a sec-

ond on the stroke of high (me. The second period was more even but Emely's hopes

of a comeback were dented by a 3rd goal for the visitors aHer 75 minutes. Emley

made an immediate response with a tremendous goal for striker Kieran Ryan; playing

his first game aHer a 3 match suspension. Captain Michael Tunnacliffe further reduced

the defict with a stunning shot from the edge of the area but there was insufficient

(me to snatch a draw.

STALEMATE FOR Emley

Emley were held to a 0 - 0 stalemate at Knaresborough Town on Saturday in their final

game of the regular season. They are now preparing for tonight's first ever match in

the Northern Coun(es East League Division 1 Play Off semi final at their Fantas(c Me-

dia Welfare Ground (kick off 7.45pm); a local derby against Penistone Church.

Emley thought they had taken the lead in the early stages but the 'goal' was disal-

lowed for an infringement in the box. The match was an end to end affair as scores

from the other matches involving promo(on contenders filtered through to the

Manse Lane Ground.

At half (me Bo.esford were losing 0 - 2 at champions Hemsworth and a victory for

Emley would have moved them into 3rd place, on goal difference, above the team

which had beaten them 3 - 2 on Wednesday night. If Emley won the match this would

have meant the Scunthorpe based side would have needed to secure a point in their

final league match on Monday but sadly it wasn't to be. Meanwhile Hallam also held

2nd place AFC Mansfield to a stalemate but that was enough to ensure the home side

were promoted.

Hallam's result moved them into 5th as Penistone went behind in the 89th minute at

Grimsby but a drama(c two goal finish by the visitors set up the derby clash.

Penistone Church Football Club was formed in 1906 when Penistone Choir-boys and Penistone Juniors amalga-mated to form Penistone Church FC.

In 1909 they became the first winners of the Sheffield Junior Cup. They had to use public transport to get home from the game and they arrived back in Penistone at 8-55pm to be met by a crowd of over two thousand people. Having started life in the Sheffield Am-ateur League, which they also won, they then played in the Penistone League and, again, won the league. They went on to play in, and win, the Sheffield Hatchard League.

Years later when the Hatchard League and County Senior League joined to form the Sheffield County Senior League, Penistone was one of the founder members, with two teams playing in the League and this is where the reserves play to this day. They have won the Division One title twice and been runners-up in the Premier Divi-sion and the League Cup. The Reserves have played in Division 2 since the league was formed but in the 2009/10 season won promotion to Division 1. In 2014/15 the reserves won promotion to the Premier Division and, as the divi-sion already contained the maximum reserve teams allowed, changed their name to AFC Penistone Church for the 2015/16 season. The first team were in

the Premier Division until the end of the 2013/14 season when they were promoted into the Northern Counties East League.

In their first season in the NCEL Divi-sion 1 they finished in a creditable 9th position. In the last 2 seasons they have not made it past the 1st Qualifying Round of the FA Vase.

In 2006, Penistone Church FC was 100 years old making them one of the old-est clubs in the area. This achievement was marked by various functions and one of them was a football match be-tween Penistone Church and the Emmerdale All Stars, watched by a crowd of approximately one thou-sand. In 2007 Penistone Church FC became a Charter Standard club. The club won the County Senior League Cup in 2011/12 and 2013/14 and were Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup semi-finalists in 2011/12.

Having started life with just one team, we now have two senior teams, two over-35 teams, and youth teams from the Under 7s to Under 18s. Over one hundred and eighty youngsters are af-filiated to the club and there are more than three hundred members in total.

Penistone Church—A Brief History

Page 10: Match Day Programme - AFC Emley v Penistone Church

HISTORY OF AFC EMLEY

The original Emley AFC's history stretches back as far as 1903. They were somewhat successful in

Yorkshire non-league football over the years, win-

ning several championships but were perhaps most

famous for their FA Cup run in the later part of the 1990s which saw them playing against West Ham

United.

Things started to go wrong for the original club in 2000 aJer the Northern Premier League announced

new ground regula on rulings. As Emley were

unable to improve their ground, they moved to

Wakefield to avoid expulsion from the league.

The move and name change to Wakefield & Emley

F.C. in 2003, alienated many Emley fans who had supported the club throughout the years. The final

straw came when the Northern Coun es East

League discon nued its reserve league as the re-

serve team had con nued to play at the old Wel-fare Ground in Emley even aJer the first team

move to Wakefield.

The disbanding of the Reserve Team lead to several fans and former members forming the current club

in the name of A.F.C. Emley in 2005, moving back to

their home village. During their first season, the club finished third in the West Yorkshire League

Division One. A year later the club was successful in

an applica on to become members of the Northern

Coun es East Football League Division One. Joint managers Nicky Bramald and Ray Dennis stood

down at the end of the 2007-08 season aJer the

club struggled to find its feet at the higher level.

For the 2008-09 season, AFC Emley appointed ex-

professional footballer Ian Banks as 1st team man-

ager assisted by Grant Crookes. The club occupied a

place in the top five of the league for most of the season but inconsistent form towards the end of

the season saw them finish in 8th place.

In 2009/10 the team once again finished in 8th

posi on aJer a promising first half of the season.

They did however enjoy runs to the quarter finals

in the League and Sheffield Cups defea ng UniBond League side Worksop Town on the way. The newly

formed reserve side performed be:er however

finishing 3rd in the WRCL 2nd division and winning

the League Cup under the leadership of Darren

Hepworth.

Emley parted company with Banks and Crookes in May 2010 and appointed up and coming manager

Darren Bland to the post as they looked to build

and challenge for Promo on. Bland had a mixed

start to his tenure with a number of players leaving

the club, requiring him to draJ in new personnel. A string of disappoin ng results in the league was

contrasted with decent form in the cups and victo-

ries over higher-level opponents Runcorn Linnets

and Winterton Rangers.

Bland resigned in November 2010 to take up a

coaching role with Sheffield United’s academy.

Reserve team manager Darren Hepworth was asked to step up to manage the First Team and

immediately brought stability to the side. A string

of good performances propelled his side from the

bo:om 3 up into the top half of the table and ul -mately completed the season in yet another 8th

place.

For season 2011/12 Hepworth enlisted a new assis-

tant in the shape of the vastly experienced Roly

Lanes and the pair endured a turbulent season

losing key players through injury and suspension

but finished strongly to end up in 10th place.

2012/13 saw fresh op mism in the club with the

arrival of Pat Piearcey as Head of Player Develop-ment as Hepworth strove to bring a more profes-

sional approach to First Team management. This

was underlined by the appointment of Joe Howson to manage the development squad and the for-

ma on of an Under 19 side under the leadership of

Alan Semley. The season saw many highs including

a best ever 4th Round Proper appearance in the FA Vase, the away win at Barnoldswick in the 3rd

Round being a day which will live long in the mem-

ories of those who were present, together with

another best in the form of a 7th place finish in the NCEL 1st Division. On an individual note, striker

Ashley Flynn finished as the division’s leading scor-

er with 42 goals, 7 ahead of his nearest challenger.

2013/14 brought more changes as the Develop-

ment Squad moved to the Lancashire League ena-

bling them to meet a higher standard of opposi-

on. In a successful debut season they finished 2nd

to run-away winners FC United of Manchester.

Under the stewardship of Richard Spychalski the Under 19s clinched a league and cup double playing

some a:rac ve fluent football that resulted in a

free-scoring side that dominated games from the

first to the last.

2014/15 resulted in Emley’s best finish in the NCEL

to date. AJer leading the division for much of the season, the club eventually finished in 5th place.

Meanwhile the Development Squad and Under 19s

both won the league tle under Joe Howson and

Howard Cartledge respec vely.
