IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION!

Dear Participants,

Although the course was originally planned to be a small group with liveinstruction, due to the new Corona measures I'm still at home in theNetherlands, and under the most recent assumptions, I'd need to stay inquarantine in Berlin for two weeks after arrival, so the course, at leastin the begining will have to be carried out digitally.

Since I don't currently have a webcam or microphone here, we'll conduct thecourse on Moodle2 via forums, chat and e-mail. Please consult theintroduction there for more information! The link is

https://moodle2.uni-potsdam.de/course/view.php?id=25983

or log in to Moodle2 and go to "Syntax und Semantik von Relativsätzen". Thelanguage can be English or German, depending on the wishes of participants.

Best, Craig Thiersch

Original text:

Dear Participants, a "Moodle2" course has been applied for under the German title "Syntax und Semantik von Relativsaetzen".

In the next days I'll provide more information about the course. It's planned to be normal physical-presence instruction:

according to the Corona rules, up to 11 people can be present in the room. The language can be German or English

depending on the wishes of the participants. Best, CT

The architecture of grammar: A research paper"March 22 to 26, 2021, every day 14:00 to 15:00room 403, ZAS, Schützenstr. 18, 10117 Berlin

Architectural considerations played a big role in linguistic research in the 1970s (e.g. work by Chomsky, Jackendoff, andMontague), but less since. The goal of the seminar is to develop a critical understanding of both the classical arguments andmore recent work bearing on the matter. We introduce a rough division between syntax-based, usage-based, and meaning-based conceptions of grammar, but focus on concrete empirical arguments that can distinguish between these.

On the optimistic assumption that the Corona situation remains halfway stable, the plan is to teach the course in class. In-class attendance takes place on a voluntary basis. The first intro meeting on 3 November will be online-only!

The course will also be transmitted online via zoom - we will use the same zoom-meeting throughout the semester:

https://uni-potsdam.zoom.us/j/62086512105Meeting-ID: 620 8651 2105Kenncode: 68156937

For in-class teaching, the maximal number of persons allowed in the room will be restricted to 8. With more than 8 courseparticipants, we would change to a hybrid system with two groups and bi-weekly in-class attendance and bi-weekly zoomattendance, respectively.

Notice that a strict airing plolicy will be implemented, so be prepared to bring and wear warm clothing. We will aim ata cosy wintercamp feeling.

The moodle- course page is here: https://moodle2.uni-potsdam.de/course/view.php?id=11693

Contents: The class will provide you with an overview of the central issues surrounding the interpretation of morphologicallyplural expressions, such as 'apples'. These differ in meaning from SG expressions ('apple') in a number of ways, with plentyof repercussions for the compositional semantics of the clause. The first part of class will set up the formal semantics of plural(and mass!) expressions on the basis of German and English. In the second part of class, we will then look at sententialsemantic phenomena triggered by plural expressions (distributivity, collectivity, reciprocity, cumulativity, event plurality). In thethird class, we will look at number marking from a cross-linguistic perspective with a focus on Non-Indoeuropena languages(Mandarin, Turkish, Wolof, Dagaare, and the Amazonian language Yudja etc.)

The following requirements hold for course credit: (i.) one written homework assignment on the formal semantics of plurals(3-4 pages); (ii.) one in-class presentation (or via zoom) of an article on plural semantics; (iii.) course project plus writtensummary.

For the module exam: elaboration of the course project in the form of a term paper (15 pages).

This course provides an overview of current issues and controversies in second language (L2) acquisition research, focusingon formal linguistic (generative) approaches to the L2 acquisition of syntax. Specific questions to be addressed include: Whatare the similarities and differences between child first language (L1) and adult L2 acquisition of grammar, and between earlyand late bilinguals? How do L2 learners acquire the target grammar? What aspects of grammar are particularly difficult for L2learners to acquire, and why? What is special about L3 acquisition? How and to what extent do properties of learners’ priorlanguage(s) influence the development of L2/L3 grammatical competence?

Voraussetzung

This course presupposes a good grounding in grammatical theory and description.

This course will be taught completely online, using zoom. Lecture notes will be provided.

This is part 1 of a two-part course. The second part of this course will be taught in summer and will focus exclusively on linearmixed modeling.

We will be studying statistics from the ground up. We presuppose no background in statistics or R. We will begin by teachingR, and then we will work through some important statistical concepts, namely, probability distributions, the samplingdistribution of the sample mean, the central limit theorem, the one-sample and two-sample t-tests, and the paired t-test,simple linear modeling, and multiple regression. This course prepares the student for the summer semester class (part 2).
