INTRODUCTIONANDOVERVIEW
ABriefHistoryofSamfordUniversitySamfordUniversityisthelargestprivatelysupportedandfullyaccreditedinstitutionforhigherlearninginAlabama.Foundedbyagroupofeducation,economic,andreligiousleaders,theschoolwascharteredin1841andopeneditsdoorsonJanuary3,1842,inMarion,AlabamaasHowardCollege.IthassurvivedtwodestructivefiresandthepartialparalysisoftheCivilWarandReconstruction.In1887itwasrelocatedtoBirmingham,andin1957theinstitutionwasmovedtoitspresentcampus.In1920HowardCollegegainedmembershipintheSouthernAssociationofCollegesandSchools–CommissiononColleges(SACS-COC).TheestablishmentoftheTeacherEducationDivisionin1914andtheDivisionofPharmacyin1927highlightedtheschool’scontinuousgrowththroughouttheyears.ThehistoricandrenownedCumberlandSchoolofLaw,establishedin1847inLebanon,Tennesseewasacquiredin1961.TheUniversitynowconsistsoftheHowardCollegeofArtsandSciences,BrockSchoolofBusiness,OrleanBullardBeesonSchoolofEducation,SchooloftheArts,BeesonSchoolofDivinity,CumberlandSchoolofLaw,andtheCollegeofHealthScienceswhichincludesIdaV.MoffettSchoolofNursing,McWhorterSchoolofPharmacy,SchoolofHealthProfessions,andSchoolofPublicHealth.SamfordUniversitywasfoundedbyBaptistsofAlabama,andtodaymaintainsacloserelationshipwiththeAlabamaBaptistStateConvention(SouthernBaptistConvention).WhiletheUniversitycherishesthisrelationshipandseesitsrolecenteredonChristianbelief,Samfordisopentostudentsofalldenominationsandfaithtraditions.
ABriefHistoryoftheSchooloftheArtsIn1948,HowardCollege’sboardoftrusteesunanimouslyapprovedtheestablishmentoftheDepartmentofMusictoofferthebachelorofmusicdegree.Priortothattime,musicwastaughtoncampusbyprofessionalmusiciansfromalocalmusicschoolthroughacooperativeagreement,butabachelor’sdegreewasnotoffered.By1952,themusiccurriculumwassosuccessfulthatmoreteachingspacewasrequiredtoaccommodatethedemandformusiccourses.In1970,thedepartmentwaselevatedtoschoolstatus.In2001,Samford’stheatreandmusicprogramscombinedtocreateaSchoolofPerformingArts.Visualartsfollowedin2007,andin2008SamfordannouncedthenewSchooloftheArts,comprisingtheDivisionofMusic,DepartmentofTheatreandDanceandVisualArtsDepartment.TheSchooloftheArtsnowoffers16majors,7minors,and8graduatedegrees.

MSDSDEGREEOVERVIEW
The degree program is a scholarly research-based program, for those individuals who seek advanced education in the field of design, research and teaching. The degree addresses diverse aspects of design inquiry through a set of core courses, promoting the integration of research in design and undergirded by learning from a Christian worldview. To prepare for this research, students undertake a set of core courses in research methods, followed by related topical courses. Seeking to prepare professional designers to impact the vast field of design, students will complete their coursework with

a definitive, original scholarly research thereby adding to the body of knowledge within their field of expertise.
MSDSPROGRAMOUTCOMESUponsatisfactorycompletionoftheMSDSdegree,allgraduateswillbeabletodemonstrateabroadknowledgeandskillsbaseinthecoreareasofdesign,academicresearchandthepracticeofdesigneducation.Graduateswillbeableto:
• Demonstrateanunderstandingofvariousresearchmethodologies.• Examinecurrenttrendsinarchitecture,interiordesign,andenvironmental
design.• Demonstrateknowledgeandskillsforeffectivedesignresearchand/or
educationpracticeintheirselectedareaofexpertise.• Applycurrentresearchfindingsandtheknowledgeofprofessionalstandards
tothepracticeofdesigneducation.• Engageinresearchactivitiesthatcontributetothebodyofknowledgeinthe
fieldofinteriordesignand/ordesigneducation• Engageinanalyticalmethodsinordertoeffectoptimaloutcomes• Transfertheknowledgeofservicetotheacademicexperience.
ProgramAccreditationTheMasterofScienceinDesignStudiesisnotaccreditedbytheCouncilforInteriorDesignAccreditation(CIDA)oraNationalArchitecturalAccreditingBoard(NAAB)accrediteddegreenorisitasufficientprerequisitefortakingthearchitecturallicensingexam.
CURRICULUMMODEL
TheMSDSprogramis24-monthsofadvancedstudywithanemphasisondesign,researchandteaching.Cohortsbegineverysummerwithanextendedweekendorientationon-campus.Thecurriculumrequires33creditsofmasterlevelcoursework.Theprogramincludescourseworkinthefollowingareas:
a) Designcore,coursesrelatedtointeriordesign,architecture,anddesigntheory.
b) Pedagogicalpracticeswithindesigneducationc) Research,coursesrelatedtoqualitativeandquantitativeresearch
methods.d) MasterThesis.TheMSDSprogramculminatesinthesuccessful
completionofthemasterthesis.Thethesisshouldbeginintheearlystagesoftheprogramandcontinuedthroughoutthecoursework.The thesis will be used to explore new insights thereby contributing to the body of knowledge that can in turn advance the discipline and practice of

interior design and/or design education. The scholarly work is planned with a two-member committee.
Full-timevs.Part-timestatusForfinancialaidpurposes,studentsmustregisterforaminimumofsixsemesterhourstobeconsideredfull-time.Foursemesterhoursisfulltimeforsummerterm.Studentswhoenrollinfewerthansixhoursspringorfall,orthreehoursinthesummerwillbeconsideredpart-time.Ifastudentfailstoregisterforonesemester,thatstudentwillbeconsideredinactive.IfanMSDSstudentshouldchoosetowithdrawfromtheprogram,thestudentmustrequestaleaveofabsenceinwritingbycontactingtheDirectoroftheprogram.
ACADEMICPOLICIES
ThesepoliciesapplytoallMSDSgraduatestudents.
ProgressionPoliciesInordertoprogressthroughtheMSDSprogramwithintheDepartmentofInteriorArchitecture,eachstudentmust:
• AdheretotheCodeofEthical/ProfessionalConductasspecifiedintheSamfordUniversityCatalog.
• Possess,orprovideevidenceofin-process,professionallicensureand/orcertificationofprofessionalqualificationinyourstateofpractice.
• MaintainacumulativeGPAof3.0.AnystudentwhofallsbelowaGPAof3.0willbeplacedonacademicprobation.
• Acknowledgethatarequiredcoursecanberepeatedonlyonce.• Acknowledgethatfailureofthesamecoursetwiceconstitutesdismissalfrom
theprogramofstudy.• Acknowledgethatanycoursesrepeatedwilldelaytheinitialprojected
graduationdate.• Studentsmustbeawarethatmattersofplagiarism,unethical,unprofessional,
orunsafeconductmayresultinimmediatedismissalfromtheSchooloftheArts.

MasterThesisGuidelinesTheMSDSMasterThesisisdistinguishedbythecompletionofspecifiedcourseworkthatdemonstratesastudent’scompetencyofcourseworkandlaysthegroundworkforfuturescholarship.ArtifactsoftheMasterThesiswillincludesubmissionofMasterThesisforpublicationwithinanynumberofacademicjournals.Projectswillproducesuchatangibleanddeliverableacademicproduct.ItistheintentoftheprogramofstudycourseworktoprovidestudentstheopportunitytofurtherexploretheirThesistopicwhileapplyingnumerousresearchmethodsandcoredesigncontent.
