DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAMME

This course which is conducted is open to those who have M.A./M.Com. or any other equivalent Examination from a

recognised University.

The subject of the thesis will have to be approved by three experts of the Parishad and if necessary candidates will have to

present themselves before the committee of Experts. It is compulsory for every candidate to write his thesis in Hindi/English

or other languages and submit the same to the Parishad in three copies.

Subject of the Thesis is required to be based on Industrial, Global technological, literary, Scientific or any other subjects

specially the following :

1. Fundamental Scientific Work.

2. A Collection of Interviews by a Distinguished Author.

3. To propound a new principle repudiating some known principles and facts propound by another.

Duration of the thesis : From three to five years.

Evaluation of Thesis : Evaluation of the thesis will be done by a Committee of scholars (Experts) nominated by the Parishad.

Appointment of Examiners : This will be done by the Examination Committee. It will consist of three members.

DEGREE : Those who pass oral examinations will be awarded.

RESEARCH DEGREE : Certificate (Ph.D.) in the related subject. The Parishad reserves the right to publish the thesis. However,

with prior permission of the Parishad, the examinees themselves can also publish their thesis.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is used in the original Greek sense meaning the pursuit of in depth knowledge. A PhD is an

advanced academic degree awarded by universities. In most English-speaking countries, the PhD is the highest degree one

can earn, although in some countries like USA, India, UK, Ireland and other Commonwealth Countries, higher doctorates

(D.Litt., D.Sc., LL.D.) are also awarded. The PhD or equivalent has become a requirement for a career as a university

professor or researcher in most fields. The Doctorate was extended to philosophy in the European universities in the Middle

Ages. At that time all academic disciplines outside the professional fields of theology, medicine and law came under the

broad heading of Philosophy. According to Wellington, Bathmaker, Hunt, McCullough and Sikes (2005), the first Doctor of

Philosophy Degree was awarded in Paris in 1150, but the Degree did not acquire its modern status as an advanced research

Degree until the early nineteenth century, following the practice in Germany. Prior to the nineteenth century, professional

Doctoral Degrees could only be awarded in theology, law, or medicine. In 1861, Yale University adopted the German

practice, first introduced in the 19th century at the Berlin University for granting the degree, abbreviated as Dr. Phil., to

younger students who had completed a prescribed course of graduate study and successfully defended a thesis /

dissertation containing original research in science or in the humanities. From the United States of America, the Degree

spread to Canada in 1900, and then to the United Kingdom in 1917. This displaced the existing Doctor of Philosophy Degree

in some universities; for instance, the D.Phil. at the University of St. Andrews was discontinued and replaced with the Ph.D.

The Oxford University retained the DPhil abbreviation for their research degrees. Some newer UK universities, for example

Buckinghsm (est. 1976), Sussex (est. 1961) and until a few years ago, York (est. 1963), chose to adopt the D.Phil., as did some

universities in New Zealand.

ELIGIBILITY

The detailed requirements for award of a Ph.D. degree vary throughout the world. In some countries (the US, Canada,

Denmark, for example), most universities require course work in addition to research for Ph.D. degrees. In many other

countries (such as the UK) there is generally no such condition. It is not uncommon, however, for individual universities or

departments to specify additional requirements for students not already in possession of a Master’s Degree or equivalent of

higher. This process differs greatly from other Doctor degrees such as the Juris Doctor JD or the Medical Doctor MD. The PhD

may be earned in as little as 60 credits while the JD requires 85 credits and the MD requires about 90 credits. In India, the

M.Phil. (Pre PhD) and Ph.D Degrees are regulated through the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and

Procedure for Award of M.Phil. / Ph.D.) Degree) Regulation 2009.
