MasterofArchitecture(Conservation)&MasterofConservationTheSyllabusIntroductionIndiaisacountrywithrichnaturalandculturalheritage.Thevariationinheritageisduetogeographicallocations, time periods, builders, architectural styles, materials, different sizes and scales of culturalheritage;existingtraditionalknowledgesystems,andcontinuityintraditionalpractices.Variationisseenin thedifferent categoriesofbuilt heritage ranging fromprehistoric, historic andarchaeological sites;anddifferenttypologiesfromabuildingtolargeculturalregions.Indiahastwoworldheritagecitiesandaround60recognizedhistoriccoreswitheightlakhhistoricstructuresandvastdomainofruralheritageis yet to be surveyed and assessed, as stated in the Working Group Report on Improving HeritageManagementinIndia,NITIAyog,2019.Therearearound3770centrallyprotectedmonuments,around5000 state protected monuments, large number of living monuments protected by various religiousbodiesandlargenumberofbuiltheritageundertheownershipofeitherprivateorganizationsorprivateowners.Therealmofprofessionisevolvedfrompreservationofhistoricstructurestoitsconservation,reuseandrehabilitation.Moreofthelocallysignificantheritagestructuresarebeinglooked-uponasaresourceforsustenanceoflocalintangibleskills,whicharefastdisappearing.Thehistoricstructuresareincreasinglybeingreusedforitsmaintenanceandsurvival.Thevaststorehouseoftangibleandintangibleknowledgecanonlybeprotectediftheheritage ismadeself-sustainable.Henceall feeltheneedofConservationProfessionals.VeryfewqualifiedconservationprofessionalsarepracticinginIndia,makingitaprofessionindemand.Therequirementforaqualifiedconservationprofessionalismoreaswithtechnologicaladvancements,drastically changing society, it is important to understand themeaning of heritage in these changingtimes.Theheritageisvulnerableduetothreatslikerapidurbangrowth,changingaspirations,industrialand intensiveagriculturalactivities,growing landprices,encroachmentsetc.Toachievethetargetsofsustainability and holistic management; conservation has to become an interdisciplinary andmultidisciplinaryprofession.SPA Bhopal imparts conservation education to meet the increasing demand of Conservationprofessionals in India. IthasanexpertiseoftrainingArchitects inconservation,since2013.Foreseeingthefutureneedsoftheprofession,DepartmentofConservation,SPABhopalhastakenupthechallengeto train allied expertise required for the benefit of heritage including Engineers, Archaeologists,Historians,Anthropologists,Sociologist,andLawyersetc.

Conservation practice requires a professional with skills towards interpretation of heritage values;maintenanceandmanagementofheritage;processandknowledgeofhistoricbuildings;andknowshowtousetechnologicaladvancementsandexpertiseforitsconservation.Hencetheprogrammeisdevisedto train the students towards theory and philosophies in conservation; process and techniquesnecessary for maintenance and management of heritage; appropriate use of standards in practice;informed decision-making and application of acquired skills and techniques. With new intakes fromallied fields, the students of the department shall foster the interdisciplinary thinking andmultidisciplinaryinteractions.Thisshallstrengthentheprofessionalongway.ConservationProgrammeObjectivesTheprogrammeshall fulfill thecharterofSPABhopaltowards impartingqualityeducation inclusiveofenvironmental,socialandculturalsustenance.ItshallbuildacomprehensivedatabaseofIndiathroughresearch and documentation. The Conservation Programme aims at developing appropriatemanagementand technical skills for conservationpractice inmultidisciplinaryenvironments. Thus thetrainedprofessionalsofthisprogrammeshallprovideleadershipinconservationprofession.ApplicantstotheProgrammeEligibilityMinimumof60%(or6.5CGPA)forGeneral/OBCand55%(or6CPPA)incaseofSC/ST/PWDcandidates,fromanyinstitutionrecognizedbySPABhopal,inanyofthequalifyingexaminationsmentionedbelowastheperthedegreeprogramme:NameoftheDegreeA. MasterofArch.(Conservation)TheyshouldhaveadegreeofeitherB.Arch./B.Plan/B.E./B.Tech(CivilEngineering)B.MasterofConservationTheyshouldhaveadegreeofeitherin:a.M.AinHistory/Culturalstudies/Heritagestudies/Anthropologyorequivalent.b.M.A/M.ScinMuseology/Archaeologyorequivalent,c.PGDiploma(twoyears)inArchaeology/Museology/Conservation/orequivalent,fromnationalinstitutes/university.d.5yearintegratedDegreeinLawwithspecializationinHeritageLaw.AdmissionRequirementsStudentsarerequiredtopresenttopasswrittenexams,presentaportfoliointheinterview,whichshalldemonstratetheiraptitudeandexperiencetowardsconservationandthreelettersofrecommendation.Theprocedureshallbeasperinstitutenormsandmightchangefromtimetotime.Theyshallbeclearlypublishedeveryyearalongwiththeapplicationforms.
