month of January. If you would like to have
Mass intention for a loved one living or deceased,
please stop by the rectory office.
Dear Friends, When it seems like the long winter will never end, most of us look for any sign that spring is really on the way. Some folks anticipate the first pitch of the baseball season; others content themselves with waiting for a glimpse of that first robin or crocus.
I’ve noticed that my friends who love to garden just can’t wait to start working in their backyards, so they turn to their catalogues. They peruse those thick, colorful seed catalogues until the pages get dog-eared.
Gardeners avidly plan which flowers, fruits and vegetables they will plant as soon as spring breaks winter’s icy grip. What could be more natural? Af-ter all, while each season plays its part, we most often associate the cycle of growth with the time when the world feels like it’s springing back to life after the drudgery of winter.
Surely, seeds are life in its most concentrated, yet tangible, form. And we humans have long known about their commonplace, yet miraculous, ability. Starting with the first chapter of Genesis (“Let the earth put forth vegetation”), we see God creating this amazing form of life and beauty which would then become food for people as well as animals.
In the Gospels, we find Jesus using his listeners’ knowledge of plants and seeds to teach them: “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move” (Matthew 17:20 - 21).
Jesus knew the power of a good story and used the seed image in several parables, most famously that of the Sower. Remember? Some seed was eaten by birds or fell on rocky ground or were otherwise wasted or could not flourish, but “other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain. . . . Let any-one with ears listen!” (Matthew 13:8-9).
Two thousand years later, we’re still listening, still trying to understand Jesus’ words, and what he wants of us - and for us.
“Every moment and every event of every person’s life on earth plants something in the soul,” accord-ing to Thomas Merton, the spiritual writer and Trappist monk. “For just as the wind carries thou-sands of winged seeds, so each moment brings with it germs of spiritual vitality that come to rest imper-ceptibly in the minds and wills of people.
“Most of these unnumbered seeds perish and are lost, because we are not prepared to receive them: for such seeds as these cannot spring up anywhere except in the good soil of freedom, spontaneity and love.”
All those gardeners browsing their catalogues know that the most elaborate plans for gorgeous flowers and bountiful vegetables mean nothing if the soil is-n’t good; if it isn’t ready to receive the seeds; and if the watering and weeding isn’t done, day after day.
If we equate the seeds of spring with hope, then the fruit of the gardener’s long labours over the seasons must be love.
That’s true in our backyards and, certainly, in our souls. If we want all that is good, holy and life-giving to flourish within us, we can’t expect to just sow a few spiritual seeds - an occasional wise thought, a kind word or a generous action - and have an abundant harvest.
Not surprisingly, it takes work and prayer throughout the lifetime of God’s seasons. In His Love, Msgr. Jim Lisante Pastor

Each week the parish happily accepts names for the bul-letin sick list from family members and friends. The list continues to grow and we are unable to know the status of those on the list.
Many times the petitioned person themselves ask that their names be removed informing that they have long since healed and they no longer require the prayers.
To address this, our Parish has RENEWED the bulle-tin sick list for the new year. This will reduce the large number of names and allow for the list to be reor-ganized.
If you wish a name to be added to the list or continued, simply call the rectory or email the parish at [email protected]

Parish Outreach
Our Lady of Lourdes
“Ministry of Consolation”
Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful
group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes
“Ministry of Consolation” team. The most valuable gifts
we can give are the gifts that come from the heart. The
precious gifts of our time, love and compassion are espe-
cially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one.
Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention
to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this
particular ministry can never have too many helping
hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector
or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time
and talents and being a part
of this ministry’s call to love and care for one another.
Thank you so much to our coordinator, Deacon Frank
Gariboldi and all our volunteers for embracing this beau-
tiful ministry. Please call Parish Outreach at 516-541-
1260 if you would like to volunteer. Thank you for your
consideration.
“We Care Blankets”
Our “Care Blankets” group of volunteers continues to
meet on Wednesday mornings from 10:00am to 11:30am,
in Room 4, right next door to Parish Outreach. Since our
group began in November 2009, a total of 1,015 gor-
geous hand-made colorful blankets have been lovingly
created. Thank you so much for the care, time and talent
that goes into every beautiful creation, each a special gift
for a very special child undergoing cancer care.
We are happy to accept contributions of yarns, crochet
hooks or knitting needles. If you would be interested in
joining please give Parish Outreach a call at (516) 541-
1260. The more the merrier!

41st Annual March for Life
Wednesday, January 22, 2014
On January 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court decided that the Constitution of the United States did not include
the protection of the unborn child. Since then more than a million and a half unborn infants have lost their lives by abor-
tion each year in the United States.
The Massapequa Park Respect for Life Committee will again join in the MARCH FOR LIFE in Washington, D.C. on
Wednesday, January 22, 2014. The MARCH FOR LIFE is the collective effort of grassroots pro-life Americans to as-
sure that our state and federal laws shall protect the right to life of each human in existence at fertilization. An important
step is adoption of a Mandatory Human Life Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Such an amendment
would be simple and require that individuals and society provide protection for the right to life of each human in exis-
tence at fertilization. It would require that State laws conform to the Constitution and provide the same protection for
every human being from the moment of conception without regard to age, health or condition of dependence. For more
information visit www.marchforlife.org
Please join us in this effort. The bus will leave at 5am and return at approximately 11pm on the same day. Please re-
serve early.
