WHO WE ARE Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science (Mass Academy) is a public high school of excellence for 100 academically accelerated Massachusetts juniors and seniors. It was established in 1992 by the State Legislature to provide an enriching educational oppor-tunity that emphasizes math and science in a comprehensive and interactive academic environment.

The rigor of the junior year curriculum exceeds that of traditional Honors and Advanced Placement courses and involves more than 1,100 hours of academic instruction. For senior year, students are enrolled in classes at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), a premier technological university, which makes Mass Academy the only public school in Massachusetts where students attend a private university full-time while they are seniors in high school.

ADMISSIONS Mass Academy is highly selective in its admissions process, ac-cepting approximately 50 students to the junior class each year from a pool of more than 180 applicants from as many as 120 communities. Successful candidates are typically sophomores ranked in the top 10% of their class in public and private schools throughout Massachusetts.

JUNIOR YEAR ACADEMICS The junior year focuses on authentic and project-based learning experiences in mostly collaborative, but also independent, set-tings. Every junior takes Mathematical Modeling, Physics, Humani-ties (which combines English and History), Computer Science, Foreign Language (French or Spanish), Science and Technical Writ-ing, STEM I (Research), STEM II (Engineering/Assistive Technology), and Physical Education. Students prepare and present five major projects during the year in the following areas: math modeling (HiMCM), individual research (STEM Fair), group engineering/as-sistive technology (Design Review), foreign language film in the target language (Film Festival), and computer Apps For Good (App Fair).

Mass Academy juniors receive a final letter grade of A, B, C, or D for each course. Because our students are admitted into grade eleven from widely varying high schools, we do not report indi-vidual GPA or class rank. The cumulative GPA for juniors is 3.62, based on data from the past five years.

SENIOR YEAR ACADEMICS Seniors enroll as full-time students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where they must successfully complete three WPI courses in each of four seven-week terms, for a total of 12 courses. In every term, students are required to take one course in each of three major academic areas: Mathematics, Science, and Humanities. Seniors also complete a 100-hour Independent Study Project (past examples include learning American Sign Language, aircraft flight training, and participating in research at university and medical labs).

Mass Academy seniors attend classes along with WPI students and earn WPI university credit. They receive letter grades of A, B, C, or NR (no record), along with an official WPI transcript. The cumulative GPA for seniors in WPI courses is 3.80, based on data from the past five years.

COMMUNITY SERVICE & EXTRACURRICULARS All students perform a minimum of 100 hours of Community Service over their two years at the Academy. Examples include Habitat for Humanity, the e-NABLE Project, Seven Hills Founda-tion, assisting at food pantries and nursing homes, and teach-ing at local schools. Over the past five years, our students have contributed over 25,000 hours of service to their communities.

All students participate in extracurricular activities, which in-clude FIRST Robotics, Math Team, CyberPatriot, BioTech, Photog-raphy, Art Club, and more.

Students may also participate in the music program at WPI or in athletics at their sending schools.

STANDARDIZED TEST SCORES[FOR THE SEPT 2019 PROFILE DATA PAGE v3f]

Unless otherwise noted, all totals and averages are based on the past five years, consisting of the classes of 2015 through 2019, for a total of 237 students.

The National and State PSAT average scores are taken from the College Board SAT Suite of Assessments 2018 report. The Mass Academy (MAMS) PSAT scores are based on a 3-year average for classes of 2017 - 2019, as the scores for the classes of 2015 - 2016 used the former scoring system out of maximum of 80 points. All our juniors take the PSAT/NMSQT and average in the 98th percentile nationally. Over the past 5 years, 58% of our students have earned National Merit Letters of Commendation or Awards, 22% were Semifinalists, and 21% were Finalists.

The National and State SAT average scores are taken from the College Board SAT Suite of Assessments 2018 report. The Mass Academy SAT scores are based on a 5-year average for the classes of 2015 - 2019. If a student took the SAT more than once, then the Super Score value was used. Typically, 98% of our students take the SAT, and more than 97% take at least one SAT Subject Test. The two most common SAT Subject Tests that our students have taken in the past 5 years are Math 2 (96%) with an average score of 769, and Physics (90%) with an average score of 747.

The National and State ACT average composite scores are taken from The Condition of College and Career Readiness ACT 2018 report. Although only 25% of Massachusetts graduates take the ACT, over 54% of Mass Academy students take the ACT. Our ACT scores are based on a 5-year average for the classes of 2015 - 2019. If a student took the ACT more than once, then the Super Score value was used. Our students have a 32.2 ACT Reading average score, and a 33.9 ACT Math average score.

The total number of AP tests taken by Mass Academy students has increased significantly from 28 tests for the class of 2015, to recently over 140 tests per year. Now over 95% of our students take at least one AP test. The most common AP tests taken by our students are Calculus BC (average score: 4.52), Physics including Physics-1, Physics-C Mechanics, and Physics-C Electricity and Magnetism (combined average score: 4.07), and Computer Science A (average score: 4.10).

STEM ACHIEVEMENTS AND AWARDS Mass Academy annually fulfills its maximum allotment of 12 projects per school per year at the Worcester Regional STEM Fair, which is the gate-way to Massachusetts State and International (ISEF) Fairs. This represents approximately 25% of all Mass Academy student projects. In addition, over the last five years, Mass Academy students have regularly represented the school and the commonwealth at regional, state, and national competitions and conferences, including ISEF, JSHS, AJAS, NCSSS Research Conferences, Cyberpatriot, Intel STS, Regeneron, HiMCM, American Math Competitions, New England Math League Championship, and the Who Wants to Be a Mathematician National Finals. Several individual students and student teams have earned patent awards and have patents pending for their projects.
