We remember all those who have died recently and those whose anniversaries occur at this time: Nora Hague, Mary Mogford, Freda Hibbs, David Sherlock, Mary Bryan, Irene Peach, Elizabeth Sheridan, Chris Kenyon, Martin Rafferty, Michael Roberts, Eva Walsh, Teresa Coleman, Eva Walsh, Richard Clutton, William Collier, Florence Grinter, Maria Morelli , James Murray, Pauline Pattemore, and Lucille Trevett It was meditating on the mystery of the Transfiguration that brought St Irenaeus to the beautiful
conclusion that the glory of God is mankind fully alive; a truly human life is the vision of God. To be truly human we have to be alive physically and spiritually. It is a mistake to think that we can only grow in the spiritual life by being mean to our bodies and, nowadays, we know that people’s bodies often get sick because their spiritual lives are in disarray; because they are affected by anger or stress. We are amazing creatures, sons and daughters of the living God, but we struggle with the tension that is part of our nature: spiritually we reach towards heaven yet our bodies sometimes feel as if they are dragging us down into the earth. In his Transfiguration Jesus, in all his glory, is that perfect bridge between heaven and earth and, as Messiah, he has come to make it possible for us to begin to realise here on earth what it means to be in communion with our Father in heaven and, in the next life, for us to be utterly at one with him in that blissful state for which we were created. Thinking about the truth of who Jesus is, it is interesting to note that at the end of the story of the Transfiguration, when Moses and Elijah have disappeared and the voice of the Father sounds from heaven no more, the disciples looked up and saw only Jesus. If we want to contemplate the majesty for which we were created we have only to look to Jesus; and the very act of looking to our Messiah gradually frees us to become radiant with him.
