FROM THE PASTOR’S

DESK….

And suddenly there came from the sky a

noise like a strong driving wind, and it

filled the entire house in which they

were. Then there appeared to them

tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each

of them. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit… (from

today’s First Reading)

For several weeks the Church has been preparing us for

this celebration of Pentecost. Many of our Scripture

readings have made reference to the Spirit of God and the

empowerment of the early Church through that same

Spirit. Today we celebrate the fulfillment of the Lord’s

promise to send the Spirit and our participation in the life

of the Holy Spirit. The first Pentecost was a life-changing

event for those who experienced it. Yet the mighty wind,

which shook the house where the disciples had gathered,

soon grew still; the flames of fire which hovered over

their heads, soon disappeared. But the Holy Spirit, whose

presence was proclaimed through the wind and the fire,

had come to stay, had come to be with the Church until

the end of time. The Holy Spirit drove out the fear in the

lives of the Apostles and then drove them out of the

security of that room into the world to be witnesses of

Jesus Christ. And the Holy Spirit never grows old! That

means that same Spirit is present in the Church today.

Are you and I ready to let the Spirit drive out our fears?

Are you and I ready to be driven into the world as

witnesses of the Lord’s presence in our lives? Is each of

us willing to cooperate with the gifts of the Spirit for the

common good? It is Pentecost and the Holy Spirit is upon

each of us. God’s blessings to you all – Fr. Mark

Once again because of bulletin deadlines I am writing this

about 10 days early. But this Pentecost is the first time we

have had the opportunity to gather again in any way as a

parish at Mass. It will be a limited gathering as we, with

the help of the Holy Spirit, slowly work our way back

toward something approaching “normal.” It has been a

challenging couple of months and will continue to be so

for a while. Once again, I thank all of you for your

patience and cooperation.

MASSES TO RESUME MAY 30 AND 31 WITH SOME CHANGES

Next weekend we will be able to offer on a limited basis the beginning of public Masses here at St. Peter’s. We will be limited to a maximum of 65 people at each Mass (that includes the priest, the reader, the musicians, the ushers and the congregation). Fr. John and I have received the necessary permissions for each of us to offer Mass publicly again. And we have been purchasing some of the various materials we will be needing to clean the church after each Mass. We do need your help as well. We will use only the main entrance to the church so that we can count the people coming in and in the interest of everyone’s health, we will need to turn people away once we have reached our limited capacity. We will be practicing social distancing as well. We are asking you to bring and wear your own mask while at Mass (we are still waiting to get the very limited number of masks we have ordered). The same is true for gloves if you would feel more comfortable wearing gloves. The first five to ten people in the congregation at each Mass will be expected to stay to help with cleaning the church after Mass. I remind all of you that the Archbishop has dispensed all of you from the obligation to attend Mass until at least July 5th. Please consider your own health and the health of your family as you make the decision to come to Mass. At least for the beginning we will be using our regular Sunday Mass schedule. Please check the parish website and online bulletin for any updates. Thank you for your cooperation and patience.

Coronavirus Emergency Fund The archdiocese has created a Coronavirus Emergency Fund to help alleviate the financial hardship caused by the outbreak. This fund will support the ministries serving those in need such as food pantries and members of our community who have been severely affected by the pandemic including parents of Catholic school students struggling to make tuition payments. Our neighbors down the street and across the archdiocese need our help at this critical moment. If you are able, please donate to help with these immediate needs: archmil.org/Giving. Thank you.

Your friends with Mary’s Garden would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Niegelsen Family and Complete Piers and Lifts for their generous donation of

mulch that was used to dress up the gardens at St. Peter. You’re the best!

Mary and the Saints

Question: Why do Catholics pray to Mary and the saints?

Answer: One of the statements of faith we make when we pray the Nicene Creed and the Apostles Creed is that we believe

in “the communion of saints.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that this communion (another word for

community) includes all the faithful on earth, the souls in Purgatory, and the blessed women, men, and children who are in

heaven. This teaching is grounded in our belief that, through Baptism, we are united with Christ and to one another with

bonds that are stronger even than death.

And so from the time of the early Church, Christians have turned to other believers for prayers and assistance, including

those who have gone before us, confident that God hears the prayers of all of His children. While we ask the saints (and one

another) for prayers and support, we remember that the saints join us in prayer. But it is God who blesses and sanctifies us.

When we think of Mary and the saints in heaven, we have to remember that we can turn to them for intercession and

assistance because they were faulted, limited human beings, just like us. This means that they are able to understand our

struggles, doubts, fears, joys, and hopes. But as we learn their stories, we can also begin to recognize that they stand out in

the history of the Church because they persevered in their commitment to follow Christ. Whether they were ordained, vowed

religious, martyrs, husbands, wives, or even children, they show us that holiness is possible. We can not only follow their

example but also benefit from their prayerful support.

Our devotion to the saints and gratitude for their witness, prayers, and protection should also be an inspiration for us,

especially when we become aware of the needs of others or when others ask us to pray for them. We are called to share the

blessings we receive. This is also part of our own journey of growing in holiness.
