FEAR NOT
How do people find hope in the face of suffering and death? That is the question
addressed by today’s scriptures. We hear of the suffering of Jeremiah and the psalmist.
We hear of the death that “reigned from Adam to Moses” (Romans 5:14). We hear of the
fears of the Twelve as Jesus sends them out into the world to preach and heal.
Through all this tribulation one message rings out loud and clear—“Do not be
afraid!” The God who saved Jeremiah and the psalmist and Jesus is fully present to save
us through the gracious gift of Jesus Christ. We have nothing and no one to fear. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE CATHOLIC ARCHDIOCESE OF GALVESTON– HOUSTON, TEXAS
Staffed by the Josephites since 1948
Rev. Fr. Nixon A. Mullah, SSJ
Pastor
“Fear no one,” Jesus says to the Twelve, as he sends them out “to the lost sheep of the
house of Israel” (Matthew 10:26, 6). This Gospel comes from the middle of his
second great speech in Matthew’s Gospel (Matthew 9:36-10:42), called the missionary
discourse. Jesus is instructing the Twelve on what to do on their mission. Since we
are all called to be evangelizers (“proclaimers”) and witnesses to the gospel, these
words have meaning for us. “Do not be afraid” is often heard in the Gospels. Even
though they are sent to their own people here, there is reason to be afraid, as the
prophet Jeremiah also realized in his day, as his friends turned against him for
preaching God’s word to them. Jesus saw that his followers would suffer, just as he
was going to do. So he encourages his followers not to let fear control them. The God
who watches over sparrows, who knows the number of hairs on our heads, will watch
over us. God sent Jesus to save us, and Jesus promises that if we acknowledge him
before others, he will acknowledge us before the Father.
When have you let fear silence you as a believer?

PRAYER TO THE HOLY FAMILY
Lord Jesus Christ, who, being made subject to Mary and Joseph did

with the assistance of both, may be taught by the example of The
Holy Family and may attain to its everlasting fellowship. Who
lives and reigns world without end. Amen. **********************************

Brothers. Amen.
