entrance hymnO God Beyond All Praising

Michael Perry 1983. Thaxed Gustav Holst, 1874-1934

O God beyond all praising,we worship you todayand sing the love amazingthat songs cannot repay. For we can only wonderat every gift you send,at blessings without numberand mercies without end.We lift our hearts before youand wait up on your word.We honour and adore you,our great and mighty Lord.

The flower of earthly splendorin time must surely die.Its fragile bloom surrender to you,the Lord most high. But hidden from all naturethe eternal seed is sown, though small in mortal stature,to heaven’s garden grown. For Christ the man from heavenfrom death has set us free, and we through himare given the final victory.

First ReadingA reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah.

Isaiah 61.1-3a

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me;

he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed,to bind up the brokenhearted,to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners;to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour, and the day of vengeance of our God;to comfort all who mourn;to provide for those who mourn in Zion–to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning.

The Word of the Lord.R. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 100 1-2, 3, 4, 5 (R. John 15.14)

R. You are my friends, says the Lord, if you do what I command you.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.Worship the Lord with gladness;come into his presence with singing. R.

Know that the Lord is God.It is he that made us, and we are his;we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. R.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise.Give thanks to him, bless his name. R.

For the Lord is good;his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. R.

Second ReadingA reading from the second Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.

2 Corinthians 4.1-2, 5-7

Brothers and sisters:Since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry,

we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides;we refuse to practise cunning or to falsify God’s word;but by the open statement of the truthwe commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God.For we do not proclaim ourselves;we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lordand ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”who has shone in our heartsto give the light of the knowledge of the glory of Godin the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars,so that it may be made clearthat this extraordinary power belongs to Godand does not come from us.

The Word of the Lord.R. Thanks be to God.

GospelV. The Lord be with you.R. And with your spirit.V. A Reading from the Holy Gospel According to JohnR. Glory to You, O Lord.

† Gospel John 15.9-17

Jesus said to his disciples:“As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love.

If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you.I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you.And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name.I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.”

The Gospel of the Lord.R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

a c k n ow l e d g m e n t

First and foremost, I give thanks and praise to Jesus Christ, my best friend, who has called me to be His

priest. The words of the Gospel text for my ordination are now alive and active in a way that fills my heart with joy: “I do not call you servants any longer… but I have called you friends” (John 15:15).

This great privilege of entering into the intimacy of personal friendship with Christ through His priesthood is truly an awesome gift. Once again, a passage of Scripture resounds from my heart: “How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise, I will call on the Lord’s name” (Psalm 116:12-13).

I would also like to thank Archbishop J. Michael Miller for ordaining me to the priesthood and welcoming me to the presbyterate of the Archdiocese of Vancouver. In addition, to all the priests, religious and faithful of the Archdiocese of Vancouver, thank you for all the support that you have shown to me on this journey to the priesthood. My heart is full of gratitude for what feels like an endless litany of people to whom I thank the Lord. You know who you are – thank you!

Last but not least, I wish to thank my family. To my father, Brian, thank you for being a sign of the Father’s generosity: “Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours” (Luke 15:31). To my mother, Monica, thank you for being a sign of the Father’s relentless pursuit for my true good:

Page 22: Mass of Ordination...Mass of Ordination to the Sacred Order of Priests of Richard Conlin by the imposition of hands and invocation of the Holy Spirit by The Most Reverend J. Michael

“But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him” (Luke 15:20). To my older brother, Jonathan, thank you coming to share my joy in this great event: “But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found” (Luke 15:32).

In conclusion, I would like to ask for your continued support going forward. I am in deep need for your silent prayers, hidden sacrifices, gestures of love, and words of encouragement. Now that the prodigal son has come back home, has received “the best robe” (Luke 15:22) from the Father, and has entered into the joy of the celebration, the real work now begins, a work bringing many more prodigal sons and daughters back home to the loving embrace of our good Father.

Cordially yours in Christ,

Father Richard Conlin
