Program Title: Mass Media JournalismVideo Production(Public Relations) UDC CAS
University of the District of Columbia College of Arts and Sciences
Program Objective Student Learning Outcomes
1) To bring about an understanding ofthe mass media and the inherentdifferences in each field as well as
demonstrate growing skills in aspecialization and mastery of selected
computer programs.
To teach all specific skills and practicesfor students to write, edit, evaluate andproduce content to a professional
standard for a variety of media includingvideo, print, film, online platforms andother multimedia.
Students are introduced to skill sets formajor media forms:
o Writingo Technologyo Management
a. Students will learn how to write correctly andclearly in formats and styles appropriate for the
communications professions, audiences andpurposes they serve.
b. Students will learn how to present informationand perform in various media utilizing appropriatetechniques and technologies.
c. Students will learn competent management skillsfor the control of time, human resources andtechnical resources.
d. Students will apply content and technology skills
e. Students will learn how to research efficiently
and effectively from primary and secondary sources,and correctly credit or cite sources, createbibliographies and understand and respect
copyright.
2) To develop a functioning ethic of
global intercultural competence specificto digital media creation, distributionand interaction in student work and
faculty research.
a. Students will gain a familiarity with language,geography and culture both generally and with aspecialization on a specific region, group or culture.
b. Students will engage in specific intercultural
projects to demonstrate skills and communicationabilities.
3) To encourage students to criticallyevaluate their own work, that of other
students and published/broadcast worksfor accuracy and fairness, ethics, clarity,appropriate style and grammaticalcorrectness.
a. Students will become familiar with post-facto fact-
checking, thematic deconstruction, objectiveevaluation and subjective sthetic criticism.
b. Students will understand contemporary means of
persuasion as well as classical rhetoric and strategiccommunications.
c. Students will demonstrate competence through:o examinations (written & online)o exercises (technical & creative)o essays (editorials & expositions)o experimentations (documentary & narrative
productions)

4) To foster students to utilize theirskills and abilities in communityoutreach, continuing education, pre-
professional opportunities and servicelearning.
a. Students will participate in internships, on-campusopportunities and off-campus relationships.
b. Students will demonstrate excellence in a chosenarea of expertise through portfolio review.
5) To provide expertise and academicsupport for minor programs, generaleducation courses, graduate programs
and professional certifications.
To become a central institute withinthe university for promoting MediaLiteracy.
a. Students will integrate competencies from theGeneral Education curriculum.
b. Mass Media courses will serve Foundational and
Exploratory level criteria in the General Educationcurriculum.
b. Non-major students will sample from courses,including certificate-level and graduate-level
programs.
