Anointing of the Sick is the sacrament that is received by those who are ill or suffering. By the sacred anointing and the prayer of the priest, the whole Church commends those who are sick to Christ. The sick person receives the Holy Spirit’s gifts of strength, faith, peace, and courage, and his or her suffering is united with the suffering of Christ for the building up of the Church.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church nos. 1520-23) And in Scripture, through the Apostle James Christ has commanded us: “Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters [priests] of the Church, and they should pray over him and anoint [him] with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.” – The Letter of James 5:14-15 So, if you wish to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick for yourself or a loved one, or before or during a hospital stay/surgery for yourself or another, please call the parish office at 508 867-6469. My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

The Catholic University of America, founded in 1887 by the U.S. Catholic bishops with the support of Pope Leo XIII, is the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States. Established as a graduate research center, the university began offering undergraduate education in 1904 and today is home to 12 schools and 21 research facilities. Catholic University is the only American university with ecclesiastical faculties granting canonical degrees in three disciplines (canon law, philosophy, and theology). As such, it has a special responsibility to educate future leaders for our Church and our nations. In a very tangible way, The Catholic University of America belongs to all of us in the Church, regardless of where we live.

All of the funds received through this collection underwrite the financial aid program at the university. Simply put, your contributions directly benefit students at CUA from all over the country, including the Diocese of Worcester, by funding scholarships for those who would not otherwise be able to attend. Through the parish scholarship program, pastors have the opportunity to nominate an academically qualified parishioner to receive an annually renewable scholarship to attend CUA. This past year, more than 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students at CUA received scholarship support thanks to the funds raised through this collection.

Students at Catholic University receive personalized attention in a wide range of programs, combining an excellent liberal arts curriculum with courses in their major fields of study. Grounded in the philosophy of the Catholic intellectual tradition, these students are well prepared for success in life and ready to make a difference in today’s world. I encourage you to be generous in the special collection for The Catholic University of America, to be taken at the Lord’s Day Masses in all the parishes throughout the Diocese of Worcester, next weekend, January 2 and 3.

With prayerful best wishes, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Robert J. McManus Bishop of Worcester
