There are several similarities between Luke's and Matthew's report of Jesus' great teaching. Both begin with the Beatitudes . Matthew includes nearly all the content that Luke does; the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew's Gospel is longer than Luke's Sermon on the Plain. There are, however, differences in language and nuance. For example, Matthew presents this portion of the teaching as a contrast between Jesus' teaching and the teachings of the law and the prophets. This is in keeping with Matthew's concern to address his predominantly Jewish audience. It is likely that Luke omits this contrast because it was unnecessary for the Gentile believers for whom Luke is writing. Another point of contrast between Matthew and Luke's presentation is the terminology. In Luke, Jesus contrasts the behavior of his followers with the behavior of “sinners.” In Matthew, Jesus contrasts the behavior desired with the behavior of tax collectors and Gentiles. Matthew concludes the teaching about love of enemies with the admonition to be perfect as God is perfect; Luke concludes by emphasizing God's mercy. In both Gospels, Jesus' words challenge those who would follow him to be more like God. God loves us beyond our expectations, beyond anything we can possibly imagine. In response to God's love, we are to love as God loves, beyond expectations and with a depth beyond imagining. © Copyright Loyola Press, All Rights Reserved. The Sacrament of Penance goes by other names like Reconciliation and Confession. No matter what you call it, it is a beautiful sacrament of healing that Christ has given to his Church: "But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us" (2 Corinthians 4:7). The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, like the other Sacraments, is an encounter with Jesus Christ himself. Open Wide the Doors to Christ offers a concise explanation of this beautiful and healing gift from Jesus:

“When we confess our sins to another we are required to look the sin squarely in the eye, take ownership and responsibility for it, and admit it to another. We literally empty ourselves of sin so we may be filled with the grace of Christ…”

This is the most powerful aspect of the Sacrament of Penance. Remember that all the sacraments are visible, tangible signs that make present to us in a natural way what God is doing supernaturally. God is communicating His grace and love for us in a way we know and understand. Penance is an extraordinarily human and tangible experience of God’s mercy and forgiveness.

If we were to simply ask God for forgiveness, we could only trust that He has forgiven us. But through confessing our sins in the Sacrament of Penance, we have a tangible means to give our sins over to Christ. Through the ministry of the priest, we experience Christ’s forgiveness in a human and tangible way, through our senses of hearing, feeling, experiencing, and knowing. At the end of confession the priest extends his hand over us calling down the power of the Holy Spirit, allowing us to us hear and know the reality and power of Christ’s merciful forgiveness through the priest’s prayer of absolution.

By confessing our sins to a priest we participate in the Sacrament of Penance that Christ established. Through the sacrament Christ forgives us and brings about a real healing of our human nature. We also experience in a powerful way God’s love and mercy that pours forth from the heart of Christ.

As Lent approaches, I invite you to rediscover the love and mercy that Jesus Christ has for you in the Sacrament of Penance. Confessions times are Saturdays, 2:30-3:30 PM or by appointment. Don't be afraid or embarrassed to confess your sins; instead, come and experience new life and freedom in your relationship with Jesus Christ and his Church.

At Our Lady of Guadalupe, we will present a series of videos and discussions on the theme of "forgiveness" throughout Lent (dates and times coming soon). We welcome you, your family and your children to these sessions. Come and rediscover the power of forgiveness and reconciliation. Unburden yourself of unforgiveness and the guilt of sin, and experience the love and mercy of Jesus Christ!
