ANGLE a SEA OF STARS in the pitch black sky.

SHEPARD points her omnitool at the sky. The omnitool BEEPS SOFTLY and displays text. She reads the text, then gazes back at the stars. Her omnitool BEEPS LOUDLY, indicating a new message. She reads the message, then gazes back at the stars.

TITLE OVER: "Arcturus Station, 2183"

INT. ARCTURUS STATION- DAY

Shepard walks down a LONG HALL and enters an office. Inside, we see AMBASSADOR UDINA, ADMIRAL HACKETT, and ANDERSON. Shepard SALUTES them.

ANDERSONShepard, sorry to cut your break short. At ease.

SHEPARDAs long as it’s fun I don’t mind.

ADMIRAL HACKETTGood to see you.

All four sit at a table.

ANDERSONEver heard of the Normandy?

SHEPARDNo.

ANDERSONGood. That means we’re doing something right.

Anderson activates a HOLOGRAM OF THE NORMANDY.

ANDERSON (CONT’D)This is the SSV Normandy, a state-of-the-art deep scout frigate designed for stealth reconnaissance.

Shepard ADMIRES the display.

ANDERSON (CONT’D)Remarkable, isn’t she?

SHEPARDWho built her?

ANDERSONShe was co-developed by the Alliance and the Turian Hierarchy with backing from the Council. We recently completed on-board training exercises. It was quite a sight to see Human and Turian engineers working together.

SHEPARDShe’s beautiful.

(a beat)So, where do I come in?

ANDERSONWe need to take her on a shakedown run to test her stealth systems.

Anderson activates a HOLOGRAM OF EDEN PRIME.

ANDERSON (CONT’D)The plan is take her to Eden Prime, a colony in the Utopia System.

ADMIRAL HACKETTA crew’s already been assembled. Anderson will serve as the Normandy’s captain. You’ll be his second-in-command.

SHEPARDA shakedown run, right? Fly her there, do a few laps, fly her back?

ANDERSONCorrect.

SHEPARDWhy me?

ADMIRAL HACKETTThe Normandy is a very important asset to the Alliance. We want the best on this mission in case anything happens. Just a precaution.

AMBASSADOR UDINADon’t worry, Shepard. You’ll enjoy a free ride on the Alliance’s most advanced warship. And if anything goes wrong, we trust you’re the best person to defend it.

ANDERSONOne more thing. Nihlus Kryik, a Turian Spectre, will be accompanying us.

SHEPARDA Spectre?

ANDERSONThe Council wants eyes and ears they can trust on this mission.

SHEPARDUnderstood.

Anderson activates his OMNITOOL.

ANDERSONJust sent you the briefing details. We’ll see you tonight. Dismissed.

Shepard NODS and EXITS. Admiral Hackett, Anderson, and Ambassador Udina exchange CONCERNED glances.

INT. ARCTURUS STATION CONFERENCE ROOM- NIGHT

The NORMANDY CREW is gathered. Anderson stands at the front, exchanging small talk with Ambassador Udina. In another part of the room, NAVIGATOR PRESSLY and ENGINEER ADAMS talk.

NAVIGATOR PRESSLYThink about it. If the Council wanted to keep an eye on the Normandy, they could have sent anyone: one of their advisors or engineers. Instead, they send a Spectre. Doesn’t that seem odd?

ENGINEER ADAMSYou’re overthinking this. Who cares if they send a Spectre?

NAVIGATOR PRESSLYSpectres are elite covert operatives. They don’t waste time with shakedown runs. And it’s not just the Spectre, it’s Captain Anderson. If all we’re doing is testing the stealth systems, having a decorated officer and a Spectre aboard seems overkill.

NIHLUS greets Anderson. Pressly looks at Nihlus SUSPICIOUSLY.

ENGINEER ADAMSYou know you sound paranoid, right? Like, call-the-doctor paranoid.

DOCTOR CHAKWAS joins the conversation.

DOCTOR CHAKWASDid someone ask for a doctor?

(to Pressly)Pressly, I can hear you harping on from across the room.

NAVIGATOR PRESSLYDoctor Chakwas. It will be a pleasure serving with you again.

ENGINEER ADAMSGreg Adams. Chief engineer.

DOCTOR CHAKWASPleasure.

(a beat)There are a lot of people here.

NAVIGATOR PRESSLYYes, a fully-staffed crew for a shakedown run.

(looks at Adams)Completely normal.

ENGINEER ADAMSI’ll give you that one. They usually go with a skeleton crew for shakedowns.

In another part of the room, JOKER lounges. KAIDAN ALENKO enters, scans the room, and walks toward Joker.

KAIDANHey, is this the Normandy briefing?

JOKERYup. Big group, huh? You’d think we were invading a colony.

KAIDANYeah, no kidding.

(extends his hand)Staff Lieutenant Kaidan Alenko.

JOKERJoker. I’m your pilot.

KAIDANHow’s the ship?

JOKERShe’s everything they’re hoping for. Her drive core could use some work, but it’s eons ahead of any other ship in her class.

Shepard ENTERS and approaches Anderson, Udina, and Nihlus.

ANDERSONShall we?

Anderson MOTIONS for everyone to step forward and activates a HOLOGRAM OF THE NORMANDY.

ANDERSON (CONT’D)By now you should all be familiar with the Normandy. Our mission is to take her to Eden Prime, test the stealth systems, and return to the Citadel for any necessary repairs or mods. Total mission time is estimated at two standard galactic days. You’ve all received specific assignments. Follow those assignments to a T.

(a beat)Accompanying me on this mission will be Commander Shepard, Alliance Navy, and Nihlus Kryik, Special Tactics and Reconnaissance.

Kaidan recognizes Shepard.

KAIDANI didn’t realize it was the Commander Shepard.

JOKERYeah. Lots of hotshots here.

ANDERSONWe’ll be at docking bay B71 at 0600 tomorrow morning. Any questions?

Navigator Pressly RAISES his hand. Anderson SIGHS.

ANDERSON (CONT’D)Yes, Pressly?

INT. ARCTURUS STATION DOCKING BAY- DAY

Shepard ENTERS. We see the LARGE and MAJESTIC NORMANDY. Next to the ship, Anderson speaks with some ENGINEERS.

SHEPARDPermission to come aboard, Captain.

ANDERSONPermission granted, Commander.

She ENTERS the Normandy.

INT. NORMANDY FLIGHT DECK - CONTINUOUS

Shepard sees Joker, who is busy INTERACTING with his console.

JOKERCommander, welcome aboard.

SHEPARDFlight Lieutenant Jeff Moreau, I presume?

JOKERUnless you got a thing for long names, you can call me “Joker.”

SHEPARDJoker, I hear you’re one of our best pilots.

JOKERThe best, Commander.

SHEPARDHow’s the pre-flight going?

JOKERShe passed all checks with flying colors. Ready to go as soon as Captain gives the word.

INT. NORMANDY MAIN DECK - CONTINUOUS

Shepard GREETS the crew and glances at the GALAXY MAP.

INT. NORMANDY CREW DECK - CONTINUOUS

Shepard walks to her LOCKER. Kaidan approaches her.

KAIDANCommander. Staff Lieutenant Kaidan Alenko, head of the Marine detail.

SHEPARDPleasure, Lieutenant. She’s beautiful, isn’t she?

KAIDANCan’t wait to see her in FTL.

SHEPARDShould be a good time.

Shepard STORES her belongings and CLOSES her locker.

INT. NORMANDY MAIN DECK - LATER

The crew members are BUSY at their stations. Joker’s voice ECHOES over the ship’s intercom.

JOKER (O.S.)Arcturus Prime Relay is in range. Initiating transmission sequence.

Shepard heads toward the flight deck.

JOKER (O.S.) (CONT’D)We are connected. Calculating transit mass and destination.

She NODS at Pressly as she passes him.

JOKER (O.S.) (CONT’D)The relay is hot. Acquiring approach vector. All stations secure for transit.

ANGLE ENORMOUS MASS RELAY.

INT. NORMANDY FLIGHT DECK - CONTINUOUS

She approaches Joker. Kaidan is seated next to him.

JOKERThe board is green. Approach run underway. Hitting relay in 3...2...1.

The Normandy passes through the MASS RELAY.

INT. NORMANDY FLIGHT DECK - CONTINUOUS

Joker reads the data on his console.

JOKERStealth systems engaged. Navigation, weapons, thrust, comms, and life support are all online. Everything looks solid.

SHEPARDNicely done.

JOKERNever expect any less.

SHEPARD(to Kaidan)

I like his confidence.

KAIDANGive it a few days.

Shepard’s omnitool BEEPS.

ANDERSON (O.S.)Shepard, meet me in the Comm Room.

Shepard EXITS. Joker looks at Kaidan SUSPICIOUSLY.

JOKERSomething’s not right.

KAIDANWhat do you mean?

JOKERDoesn’t add up. Why is Nihlus here?

KAIDANHe’s just keeping an eye on the Council’s investment.

JOKERAlenko, when you see a Spectre, it means serious shit is about to go down. I’m telling you, something’s going on. And, as the pilot, I’d appreciate knowing what it is.

INT. NORMANDY COMM ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Shepard ENTERS and sees Nihlus.

NIHLUSShepard, come in.

Shepard looks at him SKEPTICALLY.

NIHLUS (CONT’D)You’ve been with the Alliance for some time, haven’t you?

SHEPARDSince I was old enough to enlist.

NIHLUSDo you think humanity is ready to play a bigger part in galactic civilization?

SHEPARDWhat do you mean?

He turns and faces her directly.

NIHLUSDo you think you’re ready for something more?

Anderson ENTERS.

ANDERSONIt’s time we tell her.

SHEPARDTell me what?

NIHLUSThe Council’s been watching you for some time. Your service history is impressive.

Impressive enough to consider you for Special Tactics and Reconnaissance.

SHEPARDYou’re considering a human Spectre?

NIHLUSWe didn’t trust humans for many years. And with good reason. You’re brash, selfish, and naive. But you, Shepard, are different.

INT. NORMANDY FLIGHT DECK - CONTINUOUS

One of Joker’s screens FLASHES RED.

JOKERUh oh.

INT. NORMANDY COMM ROOM - CONTINUOUS

SHEPARDI--

JOKER (O.S.)Captain, we got a problem. Just received a transmission from Eden Prime. You’re gonna wanna see this.

On a screen, we see a VIDEO of Eden Prime being attacked. ALLIANCE SOLDIERS are getting SHOT. EXPLOSIONS are heard in the background. Colonists are SCREAMING.

ANDERSONReverse and hold at 38.5.

The video PAUSES on an image of SOVEREIGN.

SHEPARDSomething you want to tell me?

ANDERSONThis isn’t just a shakedown run. A few days ago, scientists on Eden Prime unearthed a Prothean beacon.

SHEPARDProthean? I thought the Protheans vanished 50,000 years ago?

NIHLUS (CONT'D)

NIHLUSTheir legacy still remains. The mass relays, the Citadel, our ship drives: All based on Prothean technology.

ANDERSONWe needed the Normandy’s stealth systems to do a covert pickup.

NIHLUSLooks like we aren’t the only ones who want it.

SHEPARDWho else would want it?

ANDERSONThe last time we found a Prothean artifact it was a small data cache on Mars. That small data cache led us to the mass relays and jumped our technology forward 200 years. Imagine what a beacon could do.

NIHLUSAnderson told the Council about the beacon in an effort to promote cooperation between humanity and the Council races.

ANDERSONThis mission just got a lot more complicated. Get Alenko suited up. You’re going in with Nihlus. Your top priority is to find the beacon.

Nihlus EXITS.

SHEPARDYou could have told me. I don’t know anything about the Protheans.

ANDERSON My hands were tied. We’ll talk when you get back.

Anderson EXITS. Shepard GLARES at the image of Sovereign on the screen for a few beats.

EXT. EDEN PRIME LANDING ZONE - DAY

The NORMANDY lands on Eden Prime. The SHUTTLE BAY DOOR opens and Shepard, Kaidan, and Nihlus step out.

NIHLUSI’ll take the side trails to the dig site. You take the main path.

Shepard NODS and Nihlus RUNS off. Shepard and Kaidan move forward. We see DESTRUCTION all around.

NIHLUS (O.S.) (CONT’D)I’m seeing a lot of burnt buildings and dead bodies. Not sure what’s going on, but be careful.

KAIDANWhat the hell happened here?

They walk over a hill and see ASHLEY WILLIAMS running from three GETH SOLDIERS. Ashley stops and looks at something.

ANGLE Geth soldiers IMPALING A HUMAN ON DRAGON’S TEETH.

SHEPARDCover her!

Shepard and Kaidan quickly SHOOT the Geth soldiers. As Ashley approaches, she sees a HUSK charging at Shepard from behind.

ASHLEYBehind you!

Shepard turns and POWERFULLY KICKS the HUSK.

SHEPARDWho are you?

ASHLEYGunnery Chief Ashley Williams of the 212. You?

SHEPARDCommander Shepard. Are you OK?

ASHLEYYeah, but my men...

(a beat)They’re all dead.

SHEPARDWhat happened?

ASHLEYWe were sent here two days ago to secure the beacon. Everything was fine until about an hour ago, when a ship landed over in the North. Before we knew it, Geth poured out all over the colony. It’s been a bloodbath since then.

KAIDANThose things were Geth? What are Geth doing here?

ASHLEYNo idea. I just shoot at whatever shoots at me.

Shepard looks at the DEAD HUSK on the ground.

SHEPARDWhat is that?

ASHLEYWhen the Geth arrived, they started planting those spikes.

ANGLE DRAGON’S TEETH.

ASHLEY (CONT’D)Anyone captured alive gets impaled onto them and turned into that.

Kaidan kneels next to the HUSK, inspecting its body.

KAIDANWe’ll get the Normandy to pick it up for analysis.

SHEPARDWhere’s the beacon?

ASHLEYThey moved it from the dig site to the spaceport this morning.

SHEPARDShit.

(to Nihlus via omnitool)Nihlus, the beacon’s at the spaceport.

NIHLUS (O.S.)Understood. I’ll head there.

SHEPARDAll right, we need to keep moving.

(to Ashley)Chief, we could use you if you’re fit for duty.

ASHLEYYou just saved my life. Follow me.

EXT. EDEN PRIME PLATFORM - DAY

SAREN approaches the BEACON. GETH SOLDIERS gather around him.

SARENLeave no evidence we were here.

The beacon EMANATES energy that causes Saren to LEVITATE.

EXT. EDEN PRIME SPACEPORT - DAY

Shepard, Kaidan, and Ashley CLIMB atop a hill. Once at the top, they feel the ground SHAKE and look up.

ANGLE SOVEREIGN flying into space.

ASHLEYThat’s the ship.

They approach a BODY.

KAIDANCommander, it’s Nihlus.

SHEPARDHeadshot. Point blank. What the hell is going on?

An armed DOCK WORKER emerges from a stack of cargo boxes. Kaidan and Ashley point their weapons at him.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)Did you shoot this Turian?

DOCK WORKERMe? No! Are you crazy?

ASHLEYPut the weapon down, bud.

SHEPARDWe’re Alliance. We’re here to help.

The dock worker LOWERS his weapon, his arm SHAKING.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)What happened to him?

DOCK WORKERAnother Turian arrived a few minutes before your friend. Your friend called him “Saren.” They started talking like they knew each other. Then Saren shot him when he wasn’t looking.

SHEPARDHave either of you heard of Saren?

Ashley and Kaidan shake their heads.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)Do you know where the beacon is?

DOCK WORKERThey shipped it to the other platform this morning. That cargo train can take you there.

SHEPARDStay here. I’ll send help.

EXT. EDEN PRIME PLATFORM - LATER

Shepard, Ashley, and Kaidan arrive and are greeted by GETH SOLDIERS. They take cover. Shepard slowly moves up, flanking and then using HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT to disarm them. Kaidan and Ashley provide COVER FIRE. When the soldiers have been disarmed, they regroup and head to the main platform.

ASHLEYThere it is.

Shepard admires the BEACON.

ASHLEY (CONT’D)It wasn’t lit up like that before. Something must have activated it.

SHEPARD(to Joker via omnitool)

Shepard to Normandy, we’ve secured the beacon. Requesting immediate evac. Sending coordinates now.

Kaidan approaches the beacon CURIOUSLY. The energy LEVITATES him. Shepard runs and grabs him, and THROWS him back to safety, but then she is LEVITATED instead.

KAIDAN(screaming)

Shepard!

We see the BEACON VISION. Chaotic images of MACHINES DESTROYING ORGANICS. When the vision ends, the beacon EXPLODES. Shepard is thrown back unconscious.

INT. SOVEREIGN - NIGHT

Saren looks at the SEA OF STARS. MATRIARCH BENEZIA ENTERS.

MATRIARCH BENEZIAThe ship that touched down was the Normandy, an Alliance vessel commanded by Captain Anderson. His second-in-command, Commander Shepard, used the beacon.

Saren does not move.

MATRIARCH BENEZIA (CONT’D)What should we do?

SARENKill Shepard.

(furiously)Now!

INT. NORMANDY AIRLOCK - LATER

Kaidan and Ashley STORM in. Kaidan carries an unconscious Shepard. Anderson waits by the airlock.

ANDERSONWhat happened?

KAIDANThe beacon did something to her.

Kaidan RUNS past Anderson.

ANDERSONAnd you are?

ASHLEYGunnery Chief Ashley Williams of the 212, sir.

ANDERSONCome with me.

INT. NORMANDY MED BAY - NIGHT

Several hours have passed. Kaidan ENTERS.

DOCTOR CHAKWASYou all right?

KAIDANThis is my fault.

DOCTOR CHAKWASDid you know the beacon was going to explode?

KAIDANNo, of course not.

DOCTOR CHAKWAS Then it’s not your fault.

He’s grateful for the reassurance.

DOCTOR CHAKWAS (CONT’D)You’ve got a migraine, haven’t you?

(a beat)Here. Try to rest.

She gives him some PILLS. He takes them and looks at Shepard with CONCERN AND GUILT.

INT. NORMANDY MED BAY - LATER

Shepard SUDDENLY opens her eyes. She has RESIDUAL IMAGES from the beacon vision. She closes her eyes and grabs her head.

DOCTOR CHAKWASCommander, you had us worried there. How are you feeling?

SHEPARDBad headache. How long was I out?

DOCTOR CHAKWAS15 hours. Physically, you’re fine. I did see some abnormal beta waves and increased rapid eye movement, but all that tells me is you must have had some intense dreams.

Anderson ENTERS.

ANDERSONGlad to see you’re up.

(to Chakwas)Could you give us a moment?

Doctor Chakwas NODS and EXITS.

ANDERSON (CONT’D)You OK?

SHEPARDYeah, I’m fine.

ANDERSONThings aren’t looking good. Nihlus is dead, the beacon’s destroyed, and Geth are invading.

(a beat)And then there’s Saren.

SHEPARDYou know him?

ANDERSONHe’s a Spectre. I had a run-in with him a few years ago. To put it bluntly, he’s a merciless, brutal, anti-human bastard who’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants.

SHEPARDSounds like a delight.

ANDERSONBut why would he want the beacon?

(a beat)Did you see anything before the beacon self-destructed?

Shepard LOOKS AWAY.

ANDERSON (CONT’D)You can tell me.

SHEPARDI saw a vision. I can’t really piece it together. Bloodshed. Machines butchering organics.

ANDERSONWhat the hell is going on?

(a beat)(MORE)

One thing is clear: Saren’s gone rogue. I don’t know how or why, but he wanted that beacon and turned to the Geth to get it.

SHEPARDI’ll find him and bring him in.

ANDERSONYou’d do better than most, but Saren has access to Spectre resources we don’t even know about.

Anderson walks to the door.

ANDERSON (CONT’D)We’re going to the Citadel. If Saren’s working with the Geth, then he’s betrayed the Council and they’ll have to do something about it. In the meantime, get some rest. I mean it.

Shepard NODS and Anderson EXITS. She LIES back down.

INT. NORMANDY FLIGHT DECK - DAY

Kaidan and Ashley stand beside Joker. The Normandy passes through a MASS RELAY and into CITADEL SPACE.

They look through the window and admire THE CITADEL.

ANGLE DESTINY ASCENSION surrounded by its fleet of ships.

JOKERThat’s the Destiny Ascension. Flagship of the Council fleet.

ASHLEYWow!

JOKERThis view never gets old.

INT. CITADEL ELEVATOR - DAY

Shepard, Ashley, and Kaidan are NERVOUS, PENSIVE as they ride the elevator to the Citadel Tower.

ANDERSON (CONT'D)

ASHLEYSo, who wants to bet the Council will either ignore us or call us liars?

KAIDANBit of a pessimist, Chief?

ASHLEYCautious realist, Lieutenant.

SHEPARDLet’s hope the Council’s more open-minded than we think.

ASHLEYThe Council hates humans. I’d love to be proven wrong, but I’m not gonna hold my breath.

INT. CITADEL TOWER - CONTINUOUS

Shepard, Ashley, and Kaidan ENTER and see GARRUS VAKARIAN arguing with EXECUTOR PALLIN.

GARRUSI need more time! You’re going to let a crooked Spectre go because I couldn’t get two hours to collect more evidence?

EXECUTOR PALLINI answer to the Council, not you. This investigation is over.

Executor Pallin EXITS. Shepard approaches Garrus.

SHEPARDYou’re investigating Saren?

GARRUSNo one can investigate him when all his files are classified and every step he’s taken’s been erased.

(a beat)Garrus Vakarian. You Shepard?

SHEPARDYeah.

GARRUSThe Council’s waiting for you.

(a beat)It’s up to you, now. Good luck.

Garrus walks away. Shepard turns toward him.

SHEPARDHow do you know he’s guilty if you haven’t found evidence?

GARRUSCall it a hunch.

Anderson approaches Shepard.

ANDERSONCome on, they’ve already started.

Anderson and Shepard approach the PETITIONER’S STAGE. We see Ambassador Udina, the COUNCIL, and a HOLOGRAM OF SAREN.

AMBASSADOR UDINABut the dock worker said he saw Saren kill Nihlus in cold blood!

COUNCILOR VALERNSurely you don’t expect us to revoke a Spectre’s status based on the testimony of a single traumatized dock worker.

COUNCILOR TEVOSThe C-Sec investigation failed to find any concrete evidence that Saren is working with the Geth or that he killed Nihlus.

SARENThese accusations are not only absurd, but offensive. Nihlus was a friend.

ANDERSONLike that’d stop you from killing him.

SARENCaptain Anderson, a pleasure seeing you again. This must be your protégé, Shepard, the one who destroyed the beacon.

SHEPARDYou must be Saren, the one who killed Nihlus.

SARENA shame you couldn’t protect the beacon. Or Nihlus. Though, not surprising from a human.

SHEPARDA shame you have to resort to witless insults to distract the Council from your guilt.

COUNCILOR SPARATUSEnough!

Councilor Sparatus looks at the other Councilors.

COUNCILOR TEVOSAmbassador Udina’s petition to have Saren disbarred from Special Tactics and Reconnaissance is denied. This meeting is adjourned.

SARENI’m glad to see justice was served.

The Council EXITS and Saren’s hologram DISAPPEARS. Shepard, Anderson, and Ambassador Udina approach Kaidan and Ashley.

ASHLEYTold ya. Pay up.

ANDERSONThere has to be evidence somewhere on this damn station.

AMBASSADOR UDINAInvolving you was a bad idea, Anderson. Your history with Saren is going to make it look like a vendetta. I want Shepard to take the lead on this.

SHEPARDWhat?

ANDERSONHe’s right. Saren will use me as a scapegoat.

AMBASSADOR UDINAWe need irrefutable evidence.

KAIDANWhat about Garrus?

SHEPARDWe met a C-Sec officer who was convinced Saren’s guilty. We could meet up and compare notes.

ANDERSONGood idea. Do we know where he is?

Ambassador Udina activates his OMNITOOL.

AMBASSADOR UDINAI’m assuming you’re referring to Garrus Vakarian. Notorious hothead.

(a beat)Looks like he just used his access code near Chora’s Den.

Shepard, Ashley, Kaidan, and Garrus ENTER. Garrus talks to a C-SEC OFFICER for a few beats and returns to Shepard.

Garrus escorts them to CELL A12. We see WREX sitting inside. Shepard motions Garrus, Ashley, and Kaidan to hang back.

SHEPARDWrex, you looking for Fist?

Wrex takes a close LOOK at Shepard.

Wrex GLARES at her.

She briefly looks at the merc, who is still in stasis.

SHEPARDBased on the core data, the Reapers were a hyper-advanced race of machines that existed 50,000 years ago. The Geth believe the Reapers are responsible for the extinction of the Protheans. For some reason, the Geth revere them and believe Saren is a prophet for their return.

ANDERSONSaren is searching for the Conduit. That’s why he attacked Eden Prime. When he finds it, he’ll unleash the Reapers on the galaxy.

They were initially designed to be a source of cheap labor, but we got ambitious, kept improving them. Eventually, the Geth became self-aware. One day a Geth unit asked its Quarian master, “Am I alive?”

Tali summons HOLOGRAPHIC DEPICTIONS of Geth history.

TALI (CONT’D)My people panicked. They thought the Geth would rebel. So they ordered the deactivation of all units. The Geth retaliated, killing millions of Quarians. We call it the Morning War.

TALIThe Geth possess a unique distributed intelligence. We call it the neural network. Each Geth unit operates independently and has rudimentary animal instincts, but as their numbers and proximity increase, the apparent intelligence of each unit improves. TALII examined the body from Eden Prime. It appears the spike drains all nutrients and organic fluids out of the body and replaces it with cybernetic implants. I have no idea whose technology it is, but it’s definitely not the Geth.

Shepard dreams of the BEACON VISION. She awakes suddenly, SWEATING and BREATHING HEAVILY.

Shepard ENTERS and sees Kaidan sitting at one of the tables.

Shepard sits in the chair across Kaidan.

Shepard notices the back of KAIDAN’S NECK while he secures his chest armor. She sees the markings of a BIOTIC IMPLANT. Kaidan turns toward her and she quickly AVERTS her gaze and turns around. While she puts on her armor, Kaidan notices an N7 LOGO tattooed on the back of her neck.

INT. NOVERIA DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION - DAY

Shepard and Kaidan approach the entrance to Noveria. They’re met with a HANDFUL OF SOLDIERS led by KAIRA STERLING.

KAIRAThat’s close enough. Unfortunately, no weapons are allowed past this checkpoint.

SHEPARDI’m here on Spectre business. Unfortunately, I’m keeping my weapons.

Kaira and her men RAISE their weapons. Kaidan and Shepard return the gesture.

KAIRATough guys don’t last long here.

GIANNA (CONT’D)I apologize for the welcome party. We get a lot of impersonators trying to access our labs.

They enter Gianna’s office. Gianna closes the door and, using her omnitool, DEACTIVATES the cameras in the room.

SHEPARDWhat are you doing?

GIANNAWe have one minute, so listen closely. I’m an undercover agent for Internal Affairs. I’ve been here for 6 months trying to prove the Administrator running this port is embezzling money from the tenant corporations. Spectres operate outside the law, so you must be the answer to my prayers. Here’s my proposition: I tell you where Benezia is and provide you with a pass to leave the port, which you’ll need, and you let me borrow one of your men.

SHEPARDFor what?

GIANNAI need help collecting the evidence to prove this guy’s a crook, and there’s literally no one on this port who can help me. Has to be an outsider, and you’re my outsider.

SHEPARDHow do I know you’re telling the truth?

GIANNAYou don’t. 30 seconds.

Shepard thinks for a moment, then ACTIVATES her earpiece.

SHEPARDJoker, tell Wrex to suit up and meet with Gianna Parasini.

JOKER (O.S.)Copy that, Commander.

GIANNABenezia came as Saren’s executor. She’s over at Peak 15, a private facility. I’m not sure why she’s here, all she said is he “needed to get a project back on track.”

SHEPARDBullshit. You know more.

GIANNAJust before she arrived, we received a Code Omega from Peak 15, which means there was a terminal breach of safety protocols. No one goes in or out until the crew sends an all-clear.

(a beat)Here’s a pass to leave the facility. And careful, she’s got Asari commandos with her.

A BEEP is heard and the cameras reactivate.

GIANNA (CONT’D)I understand you’re on Spectre business, but I’m afraid I cannot reveal any details pertaining to client activity.

Shepard STORMS out and, right before the door closes, she turns and SMIRKS at Gianna. Gianna WINKS back.

INT. PEAK 15 BASE - LATER

Shepard and Kaidan ENTER. They are greeted by RACHNI SOLDIERS. Shepard and Kaidan shoot them.

KAIDANWhat the hell were those?

SHEPARDNo idea but whatever acid they’re spewing killed my shields.

As they move through the facility, they notice it’s DESERTED. They take an ELEVATOR upstairs. When the door opens, they find several SOLDIERS, including CAPTAIN VENTRALIS, pointing their weapons at them.

CAPTAIN VENTRALISStand down!

SHEPARDExpecting someone?

Matriarch Benezia looks at the CREATURE in the tank.

MATRIARCH BENEZIAHer children were created to serve Saren. I was chosen to serve Saren.

SHEPARDHow can you serve someone who’s trying to destroy the galaxy?

MATRIARCH BENEZIADestroy? He’s trying to save it.

Matriarch Benezia hits Shepard and Kaidan with a STASIS FIELD while ASARI COMMANDOS surround them. Suddenly, LIARA emerges from a darkened corner of the room at full force. She runs to Shepard and Kaidan and activates a BARRIER around the three of them while the stasis wears off. Liara uses her biotics to take down three of the Asari Commandos around her.

Matriarch Benezia RAISES her hand and the remaining Commandos stay back. Shepard approaches Benezia and points her weapon at her. Kaidan points his weapon at Liara.

SHEPARD(to Liara)

Who are you?

LIARALiara T’Soni. I’m Benezia’s daughter.

KAIDANYou working with her?

LIARANo. I received a tip she was involved in Saren’s attack on Eden Prime. I came to find out why.

MATRIARCH BENEZIAYou can’t stop him. My mind is filled with his light.

LIARAWhat?

MATRIARCH BENEZIAI won’t betray him. I won’t--

Matriarch Benezia KNEELS and grabs her head in pain. After a few beats, she looks back up at Shepard.

SHEPARDIndoctrination?

MATRIARCH BENEZIAPeople are not themselves around Saren. They like him at first, then grow to worship and adore him as if he were a god. It’s Sovereign.

SHEPARDWho’s Sovereign?

MATRIARCH BENEZIASaren’s ship. It’s a dreadnought of incredible size and power. Its technology is more advanced than anything I’ve ever conceived.

MATRIARCH BENEZIAIt’s subtle. At first, I didn’t think anything was wrong. Then I started hearing noises, and found myself wanting to go wherever Saren went. I thought I was strong enough to resist it, but I’m not. I do whatever Saren tells me to do.

She grabs her head and begins to BREATHE HEAVILY.

MATRIARCH BENEZIA (CONT’D)Saren sent me here to find the location of the Mu Relay. I found it and transcribed the data to an OSD. I already sent it to him, but he can still be stopped. Take it.

Matriarch Benezia hands the OSD to Shepard.

MATRIARCH BENEZIAHe believes the Conduit is there.

Shepard stands ENTRANCED with Matriarch Benezia.

MATRIARCH BENEZIAI can help you understand it.

Matriarch Benezia stands very close to Shepard. She closes her eyes, then re-opens them. Her eyes are now BLACK.

Matriarch Benezia MELDS with Shepard’s mind. We see the BEACON VISION, now mixed in with some extra scenes. When the melding is done, Shepard FALLS to her knees. Benezia grabs her head and SCREAMS in agony. Liara runs toward her while Kaidan runs to Shepard.

MATRIARCH BENEZIAI can’t take it. I can’t fight him.

(a beat)Shepard, you have to stop him.

Matriarch Benezia grabs Liara and pulls her closer.

MATRIARCH BENEZIA (CONT’D)(whispers)

Help her understand the cipher. And forgive me, little wing.

Matriarch Benezia’s biotics begin to FLARE.

SHEPARD(to Liara)

Get back!

Shepard pulls Liara away from Matriarch Benezia moments before she sends a BIOTIC EXPLOSION that throws them back. ASARI COMMANDOS charge at Shepard, Kaidan, and Liara.

While running to cover, Shepard sees Matriarch Benezia about to target Liara. She SHOOTS Matriarch Benezia in the chest. Liara is oblivious to the shot.

Liara ANGRILY attacks the Commandos. She fires BIOTIC THROWS in rapid succession. Coupled with Shepard and Kaidan’s suppressive fire, the Commandos are defeated.

The three approach Matriarch Benezia, who is BLEEDING OUT.

LIARA(tearfully)

Mother!

Matriarch Benezia GASPS for air one last time, and Liara BURSTS INTO TEARS. Shepard approaches Liara and puts her hand on her shoulder. After a few beats, Shepard notices the LARGE TANK before them. Shepard and Kaidan approach the tank.

ANGLE CREATURE inside the tank.

KAIDANWhat is it?

Shepard activates the console and browses data.

SHEPARDIt’s the Rachni queen.

Liara looks up and brushes the tears from her face.

LIARAImpossible. The Rachni went extinct hundreds of years ago.

SHEPARDLooks like scientists here discovered an egg on a derelict ship. The egg of the Rachni queen.

(a beat)Benezia extracted information from her and began a termination order.

KAIDANWhat?

Liara joins Shepard and Kaidan at the console.

KAIDAN (CONT’D)What information did she extract?

LIARAThe location of the Mu Relay.

SHEPARDHow do you know?

LIARABefore the Rachni were wiped out, they tried to close all routes to their part of space. One of the routes they closed was the Mu Relay. After the Krogans wiped the Rachni out, the location of the relay was lost.

KAIDANThe Rachni Queen remembers the location?

LIARAThe scientists must have resurrected the Queen. Rachni DNA contain memories. By resurrecting her, Benezia could access her genetic memory.

KAIDANAnd she could use the Queen to create a Rachni army for Saren.

SHEPARDKaidan, grab the files.

While Kaidan types at the console, the RACHNI QUEEN pushes one of her legs against the tank, scaring Shepard and her team. Shepard raises her weapon instinctively and takes a few steps back. As she does, she bumps into a RESURRECTED ASARI COMMANDO, who is now walking toward the tank.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)What the?

They watch as the commando walks to the tank. Once there, the corpse turns around and faces Shepard. The Rachni Queen SPEAKS THROUGH THE CORPSE.

RACHNI QUEENThis one serves as our voice. We are the mother. We sing for those left behind. The children you thought silenced. We are Rachni.

SHEPARDHow are you speaking through the Asari?

RACHNI QUEENOur kind sing through touchings of thought. We pluck the strings, and the other understands.

SHEPARDWhat do you want?

RACHNI QUEENYou have the power to free us or return us to the silence of memory. We ask for mercy.

SHEPARDThe Rachni Wars began because of your hostility. The Council had to uplift the Krogan to stop you.

RACHNI QUEENI do not know what happened in the war. We only heard discordance, songs the color of oily shadows.

SHEPARDOily shadows?

RACHNI QUEENWe do not desire war. We will seek a hidden place to teach our children harmony. We won’t harm the galaxy as we once did.

The Rachni Queen ESCAPES. As they leave, Liara stops at MATRIARCH BENEZIA’S CORPSE.

Liara looks at Shepard BLANKLY.

Shepard, Kaidan, and Liara ENTER. Wrex approaches Shepard.

WREXYou released the Rachni Queen? My people spent 300 years taking down the Rachni. You have a 5-minute conversation with her and undo everything my people did?

SHEPARDCalm down, Wrex. She claimed the Rachni were under some kind of influence during the war and they didn’t want to fight.

Shepard stands before her team.

LIARAI’m an archaeologist from Thessia. I primarily study the Protheans.

LIARAThey’re the most fascinating species I can think of. The Protheans rose from a single world until their empire spanned the entire galaxy. Then, 50,000 years ago they vanished without a trace. No one knows how or why.

LIARAWith all due respect, Commander, there are plenty of theories, the problem is finding proof.

(a beat)The Protheans were wiped out by sentient machines called Reapers.

Shepard activates a HOLOGRAM OF THE BEACON on Eden Prime.

SHEPARDThe beacon on Eden Prime. The one Saren and Benezia wanted. I interacted with it and saw visions of synthetics slaughtering organics. I wasn’t sure what to make of it until I ran into Tali, who found a recording of Saren saying he wanted to bring back the Reapers. I believe the beacon’s vision is of the Reapers wiping out the Protheans.

Liara ponders what Shepard is saying. She’s SKEPTICAL.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)Have you ever heard of the “Conduit?”

LIARANo.

GARRUSBack to square one.

SHEPARDAll right, I’ll debrief the Council and figure out our next move.

(to Liara)I’m sorry about your mother. If you’re willing, I’d like you to stay and help us find Saren.

Shepard, Garrus, and Wrex DRIVE through Agebinium. Once at the nav point, they EXIT the Mako and look at the DESERT.

Wrex walks over to a nearby rock and looks up at the BRIGHT RED MOON of Agebinium. He collects DIRT in his hand.

They walk a few meters and see an ENTRANCE to an underground bunker. Garrus opens the bunker and the three DESCEND.

The bunker is DESERTED. Equipment has been DESTROYED, BLOOD SMEARS cover the wall. They reach a room with DEAD SCIENTISTS and TEST SUBJECTS. Garrus approaches one of the consoles.

GARRUSLooks like they were experimenting with the Rachni.

Shepard approaches the console.

GARRUSIt’s so beautiful.

SHEPARDI have one rule of engagement: Only kill in self-defense or if it’s necessary to protect someone else.

WREXA bit soft, isn’t it, Shepard?

(a beat)Garrus and Wrex, you’re up.

Shepard activates FOUR HOLOGRAPHIC GETH SOLDIERS. Garrus and Wrex walk toward the middle of the Combat Room.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)These holographic soldiers are designed to react to biotic, tech, and physical attacks realistically. So give them your best shot.

She DEACTIVATES the holographic soldiers and EXITS the main area. She now speaks through the intercom.

SHEPARD (CONT'D)

SHEPARD (CONT’D)In 5 seconds, those soldiers will appear at random locations. Disarm them as quickly as possible.

Shepard begins the simulation and the soldiers appear. Garrus immediately OVERLOADS the shields of two of the soldiers and physically attacks them, while Wrex HEADBUTTS the other two soldiers. Garrus turns to help Wrex by OVERLOADING the shields of the two soldiers he is fighting, but Wrex is STUNNED by the overload and YELLS at Garrus. Garrus is distracted by Wrex’s yelling, resulting in one of the Geth soldiers Garrus was fighting pressing a GUN against Garrus’ back. A loud BEEP is heard and Shepard enters the main area and faces the observers.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)What went wrong?

ASHLEYWrex whined like a pyjack.

SHEPARDKeep it constructive, Chief.

KAIDANThey miscommunicated about who they were attacking.

WREX(to Garrus)

I thought we split them. What was confusing?

TALIGarrus tried to overload your guys to help you, but you were too close to their shields and got stunned.

GARRUSOnly a Krogan would waste time headbutting shields.

WREXI headbutt then finish them off with my biotics.

GARRUSOverload is way more effective than headbutting for taking down shields!

SHEPARDAgain. This time, we’re going to use your powers efficiently.

(to Wrex)Headbutting may work on mercs, but Geth are a different story.

Shepard walks back to the control room. As she walks, she delineates the strategy they should use.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)Garrus, you’re gonna prime all of them with overload. Wrex will detonate your prime with warps. Garrus will finish them off with concussive rounds. If need be, Wrex can push them back with a few biotic throws. Got it?

Garrus and Wrex NOD hesitantly. Shepard activates the simulation again. Wrex and Garrus beautifully carry out the combat strategy Shepard gave them. Within 3 seconds, the four Geth soldiers fall. Everyone observing CHEERS.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)Nicely done.

(a beat)Ashley, Tali, you’re next.

Ashley and Tali swap positions with Garrus and Wrex.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)While we’re all here: Admiral Hackett just pinged me. He wants us to go to Virmire.

GARRUSWhy Virmire?

SHEPARDA few days ago, the Council sent a Salarian STG team to investigate a suspicious signal, but lost contact. They just received a distress call from them, but couldn’t make out the message.

WREXWhat does this have to do with Saren?

SHEPARDJust before they lost contact, the team reported they found information on Saren.

KAIDANYou think it’s worth checking out?

SHEPARDIt’s our only option. We can’t go to every system that links to the Mu Relay. We don’t even know what we’re looking for.

Ashley catches Tali off guard and KNOCKS her down with a swift, swiping KICK under her legs.

Garrus, Tali, and Wrex are hovered around Ashley, who is repairing weapons at her workbench.

Garrus hands her his sniper rifle.

ASHLEY (CONT’D)(surprised)

You sure?

GARRUSIf you mess it up I have two witnesses.

ASHLEYAll right, we’re gonna start by opening the barrel release. Then, I’m gonna scan the rifle for contamination.

INT. NORMANDY FLIGHT DECK - CONTINUOUS

Shepard approaches Joker.

JOKERAdams wants to repair one of the consoles before we hit Virmire. We need to make a stop at the Citadel.

JOKER12 hours. I’m not a fan either, but we don’t know what the STG team’s up against. Better safe than sorry, right?

SHEPARDAll right. The crew will appreciate the 12-hour shore leave.

INT. CHORA’S DEN - NIGHT

Shepard and her team share drinks. Kaidan, Ashley, and Shepard break off from the team to get drinks at the bar.

ASHLEYA few months ago, I’d have turned in my dog tags before I’d be caught partying with aliens.

SHEPARDAnd now?

ASHLEYNow parties are a lot more interesting.

Kaidan turns back toward the bartender. Shepard looks at the BIOTIC IMPLANT on the back of his neck. Kaidan notices.

KAIDAN“Biotic Acclimation and Temperance Training.” I was doing fine until a new instructor showed up: Commander Vyrnnus, a Turian veteran of the First Contact War. Hated humans. He worked us hard. You either came out a superhero or a wreck. A lot of kids snapped, a few died. One day, Rahna, this girl I liked, reached for a glass of water instead of moving it biotically. As payback, Vyrnnus broke her arm. I lost it and threw a biotic punch at him. He came at me with a knife, so I threw another biotic punch. Didn’t even realize what happened until I saw his neck had snapped back.

Shepard quietly keeps her gaze on Kaidan.

KAIDAN (CONT’D)After that, they shut down the facility and sealed all the records.

SHEPARDWhat happened to Rahna?

KAIDANShe was fine. Went back to Earth.

SHEPARDNo, I mean what happened with the two of you?

KAIDANNothing. She was afraid of me after what happened. I don’t blame her.

KAIDAN (CONT'D)

They share a few beats of silence. Kaidan NERVOUSLY looks at Shepard, awaiting a response.

SHEPARDThat’s why you’re so restrained.

KAIDANWhat do you mean?

SHEPARDYou agonize over doing the right thing, hate breaking rules, never let yourself lose control. And you don’t use your biotics. Because the last time you did, you lost Rahna.

Kaidan gazes at Shepard, INTRIGUED by her analysis.

KAIDANYou a shrink?

SHEPARDYou’re allowed to make mistakes.

KAIDANNot that mistake.

SHEPARDKaidan, you’re more than your past. Don’t you think it’s time you stop punishing yourself?

Kaidan shakes his head.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)You need to trust yourself again.

KAIDANI don’t know.

SHEPARDYou won’t until you try.

Ashley returns to the bar.

ASHLEYWhoa, you guys look really serious. What are you talking about?

Kaidan looks at Shepard PLEADINGLY.

SHEPARDWe were having a debate about where to put a bar in the Normandy.

INT. NORMANDY FLIGHT DECK - CONTINUOUS

Shepard approaches Joker.

JOKERI’m picking up a signal. Has to be the STG team. Only problem is I’m also detecting online AA towers. Can’t land while they’re active.

SHEPARDDrop us in the Mako. We’ll go in hot and take them out.

JOKERRight on. When the towers are offline, I’ll head to the camp.

EXT. VIRMIRE LANDING AREA - MORNING

Shepard, Wrex, and Tali DROP in the Mako and land on the beaches of Virmire. As they drive, they encounter GETH DRONES. Shepard opens the top of the Mako, and Wrex and Tali stand and begin taking them down. Tali OVERLOADS the Geth drones and Wrex primes them with WARPS. One by one they fall.

Eventually, they reach the base of the AA towers. Shepard enters the tower and manually disables the AA turrets.

JOKER (O.S.)I’m reading the towers are offline. Meet you at the STG base.

EXT. VIRMIRE STG BASE - LATER

Shepard, Wrex, and Tali approach the STG base. Shepard sees Kaidan talking to CAPTAIN KIRRAHE.

CAPTAIN KIRRAHEStay put until we figure it out.

SHEPARDWhat’s going on? Who are you?

CAPTAIN KIRRAHECaptain Kirrahe. Third Infiltration Regiment STG. You’ve just landed in the middle of a hot zone. Every AA gun within ten miles has been alerted to your presence.

SHEPARDAre you kidding me? What now?

CAPTAIN KIRRAHEWe stay put until the Council sends the reinforcements we requested.

SHEPARDWe are the reinforcements you requested.

CAPTAIN KIRRAHEAre you kidding me? I told the Council to send a fleet!

SHEPARDThey couldn’t understand your transmission. They sent me to investigate.

CAPTAIN KIRRAHEI already lost half my men investigating this place.

SHEPARDWhat did you find?

CAPTAIN KIRRAHESaren’s base of operations. He’s set up a research facility here, but it’s crawling with Geth and very well fortified.

SHEPARDHave you seen Saren?

CAPTAIN KIRRAHENo. But he’s using the facility to breed an army of Krogan.

WREXHow is that possible?

CAPTAIN KIRRAHEWe suspect Saren’s discovered a cure for the genophage.

SHEPARDWhat?

CAPTAIN KIRRAHEDetails are unknown. What I do know is these Krogan follow Saren. We must ensure that this facility and its secrets are destroyed.

WREXDestroyed? I don’t think so. This cure could save my people.

CAPTAIN KIRRAHEWe don’t know how this cure was created or what it does. Besides, the last time we gave the Krogan free reign, they nearly destroyed the galaxy. We’ll not make the same mistake again.

WREX(angrily)

We’re not a mistake!

Wrex STORMS OFF angrily.

CAPTAIN KIRRAHEIs he going to be a problem?

SHEPARDI’ll talk to him.

CAPTAIN KIRRAHEMy men and I need to rethink our plan of attack. I’ll let you know once we’ve finalized a strategy.

SHEPARDShouldn’t I be a part of your strategizing? I’m assuming you’ll be using my team.

CAPTAIN KIRRAHEYes. Very well. Follow me.

Tali puts her hand on Shepard’s shoulder.

TALIWhat about Wrex?

SHEPARDGive him time to cool off.

EXT. VIRMIRE STG BASE - LATER

We pan through the STG Base. Ashley and Garrus are sorting through weapons. Tali, Liara, and Kaidan are talking with STG SOLDIERS. Wrex is ALONE in the corner of the camp, SHOTGUN in hand. Shepard and Captain Kirrahe discuss attack strategies.

SHEPARDNo, the AA towers will blow your ship before you can land. And there’s no guarantee your men will get in. We need serious cover fire.

Captain Kirrahe DEACTIVATES the lit parts of the hologram.

CAPTAIN KIRRAHEThere’s another option. We can convert our ship’s drive core to ordinance. Yield: around 20 kilotons. Crude, but effective.

SHEPARDYou can’t drop it from orbit. You’d need to place it in the facility.

CAPTAIN KIRRAHEYes, the far side of the facility.

CAPTAIN KIRRAHENot as many as I’d like. But, I can divide my men into three teams and hit the front of the facility. Divert their attention while you sneak in through the back.

EXT. VIRMIRE STG BASE - CONTINUOUS

We hear a SHOT. Kaidan and Garrus scan the area and see Wrex shooting his weapon into the water.

GARRUSGet Shepard.

INT. VIRMIRE STG BASE - CONTINUOUS

Shepard and Kirrahe continue to discuss the plan.

SHEPARDYou’re sending your men on a suicide mission.

CAPTAIN KIRRAHEWe’re tougher than we look. But yes, I don’t expect many of us will make it out alive.

(a beat)That makes what I’m going to ask even more difficult. I need one of your men to accompany us.

Shepard HESITATES.

CAPTAIN KIRRAHE (CONT’D)I wouldn’t like it either, but to maximize our chances of survival, each team needs five soldiers.

Shepard NODS in agreement.

CAPTAIN KIRRAHE (CONT’D)It’s decided then. I’ll have the ordnance loaded onto the Normandy and brief your crew on its detonation sequencing.

Kaidan ENTERS the tent.

KAIDANCommander.

Shepard walks outside with him.

KAIDAN (CONT’D)You need to talk to Wrex.

Shepard sees Wrex, who continues to SHOOT at the water. She signals Kaidan to stay where he is, and she approaches Wrex.

SHEPARDWrex.

Wrex continues to SHOOT into the water.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)(firmly)

Wrex.

He looks at her.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)Let’s take a walk.

He follows her as they head further away from the camp into a WOODED area by the beach.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)Talk to me.

WREXThis isn’t right. We can’t destroy the cure for the genophage.

SHEPARDDid you forget that Saren’s the enemy here?

WREXReally? Saren created a cure for my people and you want to destroy it. Help me out here, Shepard, the lines between friend and foe are getting a little blurry.

SHEPARDWe don’t even know what it does. As far as I’m concerned, this isn’t a cure. It’s a weapon. And if Saren uses it, we’re all dead.

WREXThat’s a chance we should take. This is the fate of my people we’re talking about.

(a beat)You’ve done more for me than anyone and I’ve been loyal to you so far.

SHEPARDWrex--

WREXBut if you can’t give me a better reason than that to destroy my people’s best shot at a future, then the time for loyalty is over.

Wrex raises his WEAPON at Shepard, who instinctively raises hers in return. From a distance, Kaidan and Garrus are watching. Garrus has his sniper SCOPE on Wrex.

GARRUS(whispers)

Don’t do this, Wrex.

Shepard holds her weapon for a few beats, then lowers it.

SHEPARDWrex, these Krogan aren’t your people. They’re Saren’s slaves. Is that what you want for them?

Wrex thinks for a few beats before responding.

WREXNo. We were slaves for the Council once. To thank us for wiping out the Rachni, they neutered us all. I doubt Saren will be as generous.

Shepard walks closer to him.

SHEPARDIf I find a way to really cure your people in that facility, we’ll take it. But we won’t, because Saren doesn’t care about your people.

WREXOK. I trust you enough to follow your lead. Don’t make me regret it.

Garrus lowers his weapon.

GARRUSI’ll be damned.

Shepard returns to the base. She pulls Ashley aside.

SHEPARDAsh, what would you say if I told you I wanted you to be my eyes and ears in the STG team when we infiltrate Saren’s base.

ASHLEYYou mean, I fight with the Salarians instead of you?

SHEPARDYeah.

She points her omnitool at the sky. The omnitool BEEPS and displays text. She reads the text and gazes at the stars.

Kaidan approaches her.

SHEPARDThe sky’s clear here. You can see almost every constellation.

KAIDANYou stargaze?

SHEPARDSince I was little.

He lies down next to her.

KAIDANAll right, what am I looking at?

SHEPARDThat one’s Taygorus, a Turian constellation. If you look closely, you can see two Turians standing side-by-side. Brothers in arms.

KAIDANI see it.

SHEPARDThat star grouping is also known as Almira, an Asari constellation.

KAIDANWe should get back before he has a meltdown.

They stand and walk back to the base together.

Shepard’s team and Captain Kirrahe’s men stand together. Captain Kirrahe stands before his men.

CAPTAIN KIRRAHEYou all know the mission and what is at stake.

(a beat)Before the network, there was the fleet. Before diplomacy, there were soldiers. Our influence stopped the rachni, but before that, we held the line. After a few beats, they encounter Geth soldiers. Liara uses her SINGULARITY to draw out soldiers in cover. Tali primes with ENERGY DRAIN, then Wrex detonates her primes with BIOTIC THROWS. Garrus SNIPES behind a boulder. Kaidan and Shepard use hand-to-hand combat and marksmanship to take out the Geth soldiers closest to them.

After making their way through the back of the complex, the team eventually reaches the OPENING they were looking for. They enter and make their way through the research facility. While they’re walking, they see SALARIANS held in prison cells. Shepard approaches one of the prisoners, who is BABBLING INCOHERENTLY. Liara approaches another cell and finds a Salarian talking about the end of days.

SHEPARDLooks like Kirrahe’s men.

Shepard signals them to move on. Just before they reach the opening to the bombsite, Shepard sees a PASSAGE. She checks it and sees a DEAD ASARI beside an ACTIVATED CONSOLE.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)Check the console.

Liara hacks the CONSOLE while Kaidan checks for a pulse.

KAIDANShot. Same way Nihlus was.

LIARAHer name is Rana Thanoptis. Looks like she was a neuroresearcher.

SHEPARDResearching what? The genophage cure?

LIARANo, it looks like she was investigating the effects of Sovereign on organics.

Though I can’t detect the signal, I can clearly see its effects. Direct and prolonged exposure to this signal changes thought patterns. Most recently, the Salarian test subjects reported feeling a tingle in the back of their skulls, like “a whisper they can’t quite hear.” Subjects are compelled to do things, but they cannot say why. They obey without question. Over time their will is weakened and they become easier to control.

Eventually, they reach SAREN’S LAB. The lab is EMPTY and STERILE except for a PROTHEAN BEACON emanating energy.

Shepard approaches the BEACON.

Shepard ignores his caution and proceeds to the beacon. She’s sucked into its field as she was before. We see the same VISION, but now with new images added in. Shepard FALLS to the ground. Her team RUSHES to help her up.

Shepard looks at a PLATFORM above them. She is drawn to it. She approaches it, but nothing happens.

The shuttle bay door CLOSES and the Normandy TAKES FLIGHT.

Shepard, Tali, and Garrus head to the AA tower. They enter an ELEVATOR and ride it to the roof. Once they exit the elevator, we see a GETH SHIP fly toward the bomb site.

ASHLEY (O.S.)LT, you’ve got incoming Geth.

KAIDAN (O.S.)They’re already here.

SHEPARDKaidan, can you hold them off?

KAIDAN (O.S.)Negative. I’m activating the bomb.

Shepard LOWERS her head, knowing the decision before her will weigh on her for the rest of her life.

We hear SCREAMS coming from Ashley’s channel, followed by STATIC.

INT. VIRMIRE SAREN’S BASE, BOMB SITE - CONTINUOUS

Shepard and her team arrive at the bomb site and help Kaidan, Liara, and Wrex fight off the Geth.

Shepard fights ANGRILY, resorting to hand-to-hand combat. Within seconds, the team destroys the Geth soldiers.

She turns and sees that Kaidan, Liara, and Wrex are injured. As she walks toward them, she is THROWN to the ground with a BIOTIC PUNCH. She looks up and sees Saren riding a HOVERBOARD. He traps her team in a STASIS FIELD while Shepard runs to take cover. He then JUMPS DOWN from his hoverboard. Shepard SHOOTS him, but her shots BOUNCE off him.

SARENAn impressive diversion. It was all for nothing, of course, but amusing nonetheless.

SHEPARDWhy are you doing this?

SARENYou’ve seen the vision from the beacons. You know what the Reapers are capable of. They cannot be stopped. The Protheans tried to fight, and they were destroyed. What if they had bowed before their invaders? Is submission not preferable to extinction?

SHEPARDThe Reapers will never let us live.

SARENWe organics are driven by emotion instead of logic. We will fight even when we know we cannot win. But if we work with the Reapers, think how many lives can be spared.

SHEPARDSovereign’s manipulating you! You’re already under its power!

Saren notices the stasis wearing off of Liara and Wrex. He reactivates a stronger STASIS FIELD around them.

SARENNo! Sovereign needs me to find the Conduit. He’s agreed to spare me.

SHEPARDSaren, together we can stop Sovereign. We don’t have to submit to the Reapers. We can defeat them!

SARENI no longer believe that. Sovereign will succeed. It is inevitable. I’m forging an alliance between us and the Reapers. Between organics and machines. And in doing so, I will save more lives than have ever existed.

(a beat)If you will not join me, you will die.

Shepard turns toward him and raises her weapon, but is too slow. Saren BIOTICALLY LIFTS her into the air. Kaidan’s face FLASHES WITH ANGER, and he lights up with BIOTIC ENERGY.

KAIDANNo!

Kaidan breaks from stasis and throws a powerful BIOTIC PUNCH at Saren. Shepard FALLS to the ground as Saren FLIES backward. ALARMS start sounding, indicating the bomb is beginning a countdown sequence. Saren climbs aboard his HOVERBOARD and leaves the bomb site. Kaidan uses his biotics to DEACTIVATE THE STASIS FIELDS around the rest of the team.

SHEPARD(to Joker)

Joker, we need a pick-up now!

JOKER (O.S.)Almost there, Commander!

Within a few beats, we see the Normandy land again at the bomb site. Kirrahe and a couple of his men emerge from the Shuttle Bay and help Shepard and her team board the Normandy. As the Normandy leaves VIRMIRE’S ORBIT, we see a GIANT EXPLOSION engulf Saren’s research base.

INT. NORMANDY COMM ROOM - AFTERNOON

Shepard and her crew sit in their usual positions.

ANGLE ASHLEY’S EMPTY CHAIR.

Shepard is lost in thought, STARING off into the distance.

LIARACommander?

Liara’s voice sounds like it’s far away.

LIARA (CONT’D)Shepard!

Shepard is STARTLED back to the present moment.

LIARA (CONT’D)I have an idea.

(a beat)I can meld our minds again. The beacon on Virmire may have filled in missing pieces from the vision.

Shepard NODS. Liara approaches Shepard slowly.

LIARA (CONT’D)Relax, Commander. Embrace eternity.

We see the COMPLETE BEACON VISION.

LIARA (CONT’D)It’s a distress call. A message sent out across the Prothean empire. A warning about the Reapers, but it came too late.

SHEPARDWhat about the Conduit?

LIARAThere were other images. Places I recognize from my research.

(a beat)Ilos! The Conduit is on Ilos! That’s why Saren wanted to find the Mu Relay.

SHEPARDYou’re sure?

SHEPARDThen we go to Ilos.

TALINo way. The Mu Relay’s inside the Terminus Systems. Alliance ships aren’t welcome there.

LIARASaren will have his fleet orbiting Ilos. We can’t go in alone. We need the Council’s support.

Shepard leans against a window in the Captain’s quarters, gazing at the SEA OF STARS before her. Kaidan ENTERS.

Doctor Chakwas walks by her, places her hand on Shepard’s shoulder, and SMILES as she walks away.

Shepard walks by the Combat Room and sees Garrus, Liara, and Tali practicing their combat. She SMILES approvingly.

After Shepard and Kaidan fall asleep, Shepard sees the BEACON VISION again, which ends with ASHLEY SCREAMING. Shepard JOLTS up in bed, but immediately contains her reaction. Kaidan stirs, but doesn’t wake. She looks at the time on her omnitool, gets out of bed, and gets dressed.

After a few beats, Kaidan AWAKENS.

KAIDAN (CONT’D)Did Joker call?

SHEPARDNot yet.

KAIDANYou OK?

Kaidan anxiously waits for Shepard to say something. She SLIDES onto the bed and PULLS herself toward him.

SHEPARDAlways.

They SMILE and KISS. They’re interrupted by Joker.

JOKER (O.S.)One hour, Commander.

She pulls back, but Kaidan pulls her closer one last time.

KAIDANBe careful out there. I’m serious.

Shepard and her team approach Joker and Navigator Pressly.

NAVIGATOR PRESSLYPicking up some strange readings from the planet’s surface.

NAVIGATOR PRESSLYWe can’t. The nearest landing zone’s two klicks away.

KAIDANWe’ll never make it in time on foot. You’ve gotta put us down closer!

Joker drops the Mako with astounding precision. Shepard brakes the Mako just in time to see Saren and AN ARMY OF GETH SOLDIERS enter a tunnel. The tunnel CLOSES behind them.

LIARAThere has to be another way in.

They search the area and find a NARROW PATH leading to an elevator. They take the elevator up, and it opens to an area that looks like an ANCIENT OUTPOST. They walk up a walkway and find a DAMAGED HOLOGRAM. A voice BOOMS from the console.

DAMAGED HOLOGRAM(with much static)

Too late...unable to...invading fleets...no escape...

GARRUSI don’t understand the language.

SHEPARDThe message is broken, but I understand some of it.

It’s a warning against the Reaper invasion.

LIARAOf course! The beacons must have transferred an understanding of the Prothean language to your mind.

DAMAGED HOLOGRAMThe Citadel... overwhelmed...only hope...Act of desperation...the Conduit...all is lost.

SHEPARDSomething about the Conduit, but it’s too degraded. Let’s move.

As they leave, the damaged hologram sends another message. Shepard turns and faces it, a CHILL runs through her spine.

DAMAGED HOLOGRAM(repeats)

Cannot be stopped!

They proceed to another elevator and take it down. They step outside and realize they’re at a CONTROL PANEL.

SHEPARDTali, see if you can find a gate control mechanism. The bunker door’s just around the corner.

Tali interacts with the console. Eventually, a CLICK is heard and the bunker door OPENS.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)Nice!

She pats Tali on the shoulder and everyone boards the Mako.

Shepard drives into a dark tunnel illuminated only by STASIS PODS on the walls.

LIARAI’ve spent my entire life studying Protheans, but I never dreamed I would see anything like this.

TALIWhat are those things in the walls?

SHEPARD (CONT'D)

LIARAThey look like stasis pods. The Protheans probably tried to stay alive through cryogenic freezing. Something must have gone wrong. This bunker became their tomb.

GARRUSI thought Saren would have set some kind of trap or ambush for us. Must have been in too much of a hurry.

WREXOr we just haven’t found it yet.

SHEPARDWhat’s that wall up ahead?

They see appears to be a GIANT SHIELD blocking their path.

GARRUSCareful, Shepard.

Shepard exits the Mako and examines the SHIELD. She looks to her right and sees a PASSAGEWAY. They enter the passageway.

INT. VIGIL’S HAVEN - CONTINUOUS

Shepard and her team enter a giant room with a CONSOLE in the middle. She approaches the console. VIGIL is activated.

VIGILYou are not Prothean, but you are not machine either. This eventuality was one of many that was anticipated.

TALILooks like some kind of VI. Pretty badly damaged.

VIGILI do not sense the taint of indoctrination upon you, unlike the other who passed recently. Perhaps there is still hope.

LIARAIncredible! An actual Prothean VI and I can understand it!

VIGILI have been monitoring your communications since you arrived at this facility. I have translated my output into a format you will comprehend. My name is Vigil. You are safe here for the moment, but that is likely to change. Soon, nowhere will be safe.

SHEPARDWhat are you?

VIGILI am an advanced non-organic analysis system with personality imprints from Ksad Ishan, chief overseer of the Ilos facility.

SHEPARDWhy did you bring me here?

VIGILYou must break a cycle that has continued for millions of years. But to stop it, you must understand or you will make the same mistakes we did.

Vigil displays HOLOGRAPHIC IMAGES as it speaks.

VIGIL (CONT’D)The Citadel is the heart of your civilization. As it was with us, and as it has been with every civilization that came before us. But the Citadel is a trap. The station is actually an enormous mass relay. One that links to dark space, the empty void beyond the galaxy’s horizon. When the Citadel relay is activated, the Reapers will pour through.

SHEPARDWhy did no one ever notice the Citadel was an inactive relay?

VIGILThe Reapers are careful to keep the greatest secrets of the Citadel hidden. That is why they created a species of seemingly benign organic caretakers.

VIGILThe Keepers maintain the station’s most basic functions. They enable any species that discovers the Citadel to use it without fully understanding the technology. Reliance on the Keepers ensures no one will ever discover the Citadel’s true nature.

VIGILThat was our fate. Our leaders were dead before we even realized we were under attack. The Reapers seized control of the Citadel and through it, the mass relays. Here, researchers worked to create a small-scale version of a mass relay. One that linked directly to the Citadel: the hub of the relay network.

KAIDANThe Conduit isn’t a weapon. It’s a back door into the Citadel!

VIGILThere were rumors of a weapon being built to destroy the Reapers, but it was not a part of the work done at this facility. That the Reapers won is evidence such a weapon was either never successfully built or failed to perform it’s function.

(a beat)Before each invasion, a signal is sent through the station compelling the Keepers to activate the Citadel relay. After decades of intense study, the scientists discovered a way to alter this signal. Using the Conduit, they gained access to the Citadel and made the modifications. This time, when Sovereign sent the signal to the Citadel, the Keepers ignored it.

SHEPARDSaren can use the Conduit to bypass the Citadel’s external defenses.

VIGILCorrect. And once inside, he can transfer control of the station to Sovereign.

Saren and his GETH ARMY approach the Conduit. One by one, they enter the relay.

Shepard and her team RUSH back into the Mako. The shield has now been lowered, and Shepard drives through the tunnel.

EXT. CITADEL SPACE - CONTINUOUS

Sovereign and a MASSIVE FLEET OF GETH SHIPS enter through the mass relay. They immediately ATTACK the Citadel patrol fleets, including the DESTINY ASCENSION.

Joker receives an incoming message.

ADMIRAL HACKETT (O.S.)Normandy: Sovereign’s attacking the Citadel. Rendezvous with the fleet at Arcturus Station. We’ll leave for Citadel Space when you arrive.

JOKERCopy that, sir, I’m on my way.

ADMIRAL HACKETT (O.S.)Is Shepard aboard?

JOKERNegative, sir. I lost contact with her when she landed on Ilos.

ADMIRAL HACKETT (O.S.)Damnit.

INT. CITADEL TOWER - CONTINUOUS

We see a COMMUNICATION PANEL that is receiving the unanswered messages and DEAD COMM TECHNICIANS on the floor.

ANGLE Saren walking away from the communication panel, followed by a PHALANX OF GETH SOLDIERS.

INT. ILOS, CONDUIT ENTRANCE - CONTINUOUS

At the end of the tunnel, Shepard sees the CONDUIT. Several GETH COLOSSUS SOLDIERS are stationed just outside the Conduit. They aim their weapons at the Mako.

SHEPARDHold on.

Shepard slams on the gas and drives the Mako straight through the relay as the soldiers shoot at the Mako.

EXT. CITADEL PRESIDIUM - CONTINUOUS

We now see that the MASS RELAY STATUE is the receiving end of the Conduit. The MAKO shoots through the relay and lands just in front of the Citadel Tower.

ANGLE The entire Presidium is DARK, with many parts engulfed in FLAMES. Shepard and her team stumble out of the Mako.

SHEPARDEveryone OK?

TALIMy omnitool’s busted.

LIARAMine too. The Conduit must have fried them.

SHEPARDLooks like we’re on our own.

They approach the ELEVATOR to the Citadel Tower.

ANGLE HUSKS emerging from Dragon’s Teeth. They charge at the elevator but the door closes before they can attack.

INT. CITADEL TOWER - CONTINUOUS

Saren and his Geth soldiers march through the Citadel Tower shooting every KEEPER in sight. Saren also shoots a GROUP OF CIVILIANS hiding behind a tree. He walks to the end of the Petitioner’s Stage and activates the MASTER CONTROL UNIT.

INT. CITADEL TOWER ELEVATOR - CONTINUOUS

The elevator stops. We hear SPARKS indicating malfunction.

SHEPARDDamnit!

EXT. CITADEL SPACE - CONTINUOUS

The CITADEL’S ARMS begin to close.

EXECUTOR PALLIN (O.S.)Attention all forces: Do not let Sovereign inside the Citadel arms! I repeat, do not let Sovereign inside the Citadel arms!

Several TURIAN CRUISERS open fire on SOVEREIGN as the Citadel arms close. Their shots have no effect, and Sovereign forces its way between the arms, DESTROYING the cruisers. It wraps its tentacles around the Citadel Tower.

INT. CITADEL TOWER ELEVATOR - CONTINUOUS

Shepard and Garrus look outside the glass elevator.

GARRUSThat must be the Citadel Tower’s maintenance shaft.

SHEPARDDoes it lead to the Council Chamber?

GARRUSYeah.

SHEPARDActivate your pressurization system and mag boots.

Shepard forces the elevator open and they enter the shaft.

They head down a long corridor until they reach an open platform, where we see several Citadel DEFENSE TURRETS.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)Tali! Get those turrets online!

Tali runs to the consoles and begins hacking the turrets. One by one, they ACTIVATE and FIRE on the GETH SHIPS.

Shepard looks up and notices that SOVEREIGN has attached itself to the Citadel Tower.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)We need to keep moving.

EXT. CITADEL EXTERIOR DEFENSE GRID - CONTINUOUS

They now enter the Exterior Defense Grid, which the Geth soldiers have assumed full control of. Several MISSILE LAUNCHERS and GUN TURRETS open fire on them.

SHEPARDGet down!

A SEA OF BULLETS fly at them.

WREXWe can’t just run up the middle! I don’t mind dying, but it ain’t gonna be ‘cause I was stupid.

SHEPARDGarrus?

GARRUSThe Council Chamber maintenance hatch should be on the other side of the platform.

Shepard uses her SNIPER RIFLE to scope out the area between shots from the missile launchers and gun turrets.

SHEPARDLooks like six turrets, a bunch of Geth soldiers, and a few Krogan.

(a beat)We’re going to keep our shields up and take turns leading. Yell when your shields are low and we’ll switch. Wrex and Liara: hit the Krogan with your biotics. Garrus, stay here and pick off the missile launchers. Kaidan will provide back up with long-range biotics. Tali and I will move up and disable the turrets.

They acknowledge and execute the plan. Their strategy works beautifully. Shepard and Tali move up to a cover point, their shields taking several hits.

Garrus SNIPES the first missile launcher.

Liara uses her biotics to create a BARRIER around Wrex, while she and Wrex use BIOTIC ATTACKS to take down several KROGAN charging them.

Tali approaches the first turret and hacks it. The TURRET turns and SHOOTS at its neighboring turret.

TALI(screaming)

Shields!

Shepard pushes Tali low to the ground and covers her. Wrex throws a BARRIER over Tali and immediately turns and HEAD BUTTS a Krogan who was trying to sneak behind him.

SHEPARDTali, move up!

Tali moves to the next cover point. Liara’s barriers drop and she falls to one knee. Kaidan notices and runs near her to provide cover.

ANGLE Garrus FIRES his last shot.

GARRUS(to Shepard)

Shepard, missile launchers are down. Heading to your position.

SHEPARD (O.S.)Don’t move. Wrex will come get you.

Wrex CHARGES back to Garrus. Another KROGAN emerges from cover and aims a shotgun at Wrex. He has a clear shot.

INT. NORMANDY FLIGHT DECK - CONTINUOUS

Joker and the Alliance fleet emerge from the MASS RELAY into an intense FIREFIGHT between Geth and Citadel Fleet ships.

JOKERThis is gonna be one hell of a ride.

Joker makes the Normandy dance. He LOOPS and FIRES his cannon at several Geth ships, which EXPLODE after several hits.

JOKER (CONT’D)Woohoo!

EXT. CITADEL EXTERIOR DEFENSE GRID - CONTINUOUS

Just as the Krogan is about to fire at Wrex, Garrus takes out the Krogan with a HEAD SHOT. Wrex looks back, IMPRESSED.

WREXNot bad for a Turian. Let’s go!

Wrex escorts Garrus to Shepard’s position.

Shepard and Tali are now at the last turret. Kaidan and Liara’s biotics are weakening.

KAIDANShields!

Kaidan drops behind cover. Liara places a BARRIER around him.

LIARAThere are too many of them, our biotics can’t recharge in time!

SHEPARDThis is the last turret. Hang on!

Another group of KROGAN and GETH SOLDIERS emerges from the other side of the platform. Liara’s eyes WIDEN.

SHEPARD (CONT’D)Tali, how long?

TALIOne minute!

Shepard directs her fire at the incoming soldiers. Her shields CRACK, but she doesn’t move. Kaidan notices.

KAIDANShepard!

He runs toward her in the middle of the firefight and, when he’s close enough, throws a BARRIER over her and hurls BIOTIC THROWS at the soldiers. We see Kaidan’s shields CRACK. Liara is still recharging, and she’s BREATHING HEAVILY.

Just then, Garrus and Wrex emerge at full strength. Garrus SHOOTS the soldiers with his assault rifle while Wrex HURLS a series of biotic throws. They work in unison and take out most of the remaining soldiers. Right when Liara is done recharging, she finishes them off with a massive SINGULARITY.

WREX(to Shepard)

You OK?

SHEPARDYeah. Let’s move.

They run to the far side of the grid and enter the SHAFT.

INT. CITADEL TOWER - CONTINUOUS

Shepard and her team emerge from the shaft and approach the Petitioner’s Stage. The entire room is DARK, with parts on FIRE.

She senses movement around her, but is unable to see any enemies. Suddenly, Saren emerges on his HOVERBOARD and throws a GRENADE at Shepard. She and her team take cover.

SARENI was afraid you wouldn’t make it in time for the show, Shepard.

(a beat)In a few minutes, Sovereign will open the relay and the Reapers will return.

SHEPARDI won’t let that happen.

SARENSovereign has improved me since our encounter on Virmire. My doubts are gone. I understand that the Reapers need organics.

SHEPARDSovereign’s controlling you, don’t you see that?

Garrus hears MOVEMENT nearby and AIMS his weapon.

SARENThe relationship is symbiotic. Organic and machine intertwined, a union of flesh and steel. The strength of both, the weaknesses of neither. I am a vision of the future. The evolution of organic life. This is our destiny.

SHEPARDI want no part of your future.

SARENAs you wish.

KROGAN, GETH SOLDIERS, and HUSKS surround Shepard and her team. Shepard looks at her team. They all LOCK EYES and NOD.

We see a brilliant display of teamwork. Garrus OVERLOADs while Kaidan creates a TECH EXPLOSION on the overloaded enemies with BIOTIC THROWS. Liara WARPS a group of Krogan and Wrex detonates the warp with a BIOTIC THROW.

This is the culmination of Shepard and her team working together. We realize that there is HOPE for the galaxy.

INT. NORMANDY FLIGHT DECK - CONTINUOUS

Joker continuous his air battle with the Geth ships.

ADMIRAL HACKETT (O.S.)Joker, do you copy?

JOKERCopy, sir.

ADMIRAL HACKETT (O.S.)Any word on Shepard’s location?

JOKERNo, sir. If I know her, she’s inside the Citadel. But my last ping from her omnitool was on Ilos.

ADMIRAL HACKETT (O.S.)Target ships near the Destiny Ascension. We’ll focus on the rest.

JOKERAye aye, Commander.

INT. CITADEL TOWER - CONTINUOUS

A GETH JUGGERNAUT charges at Kaidan. Kaidan hurls a BIOTIC THROW at it, but it doesn’t stop the Juggernaut. Liara and Wrex together LIFT the Juggernaut in the air, and Shepard finishes it off with a precise HEAD SHOT.

Suddenly, Saren emerges on his hoverboard, followed by even more GETH SOLDIERS. They SURROUND the group and RAISE their weapons. Shepard and her team raise their weapons in return. They’re at a standoff.

Saren flies his hoverboard to the hologram console. Shepard tracks him with her weapon. Her team is BLOODIED and NERVOUS.

SARENYou’re fighting a battle that has already been lost.

SHEPARDSovereign hasn’t won yet. I can stop it from taking control of the station. Stand down and the invasion will never happen.

SAREN(passionately)

We can’t stop it! (MORE)

You’ve seen the vision, you’ve seen what happened to the Protheans. The Reapers are too powerful!

Shepard DROPS her weapon and runs toward Saren. Kaidan instinctively points his weapon toward Saren.

SHEPARDSome part of you must realize this is wrong. You can fight this!

Saren STOPS inputting commands and FACES her.

EXT. CITADEL SPACE - CONTINUOUS

A GETH DREADNOUGHT takes out another TURIAN CRUISER.

TURIAN PILOT (O.S.)We’re overwhelmed! The Geth ships are too strong! Retreat!

JOKER (O.S.)Negative! Do not retreat!

TURIAN PILOT (O.S.)Incoming missile locked on our position. We can’t...

STATIC follows the recording.

ANGLE Joker redirects the Normandy to position itself at the heart of the battle.

JOKERYou want some? Come get some!

INT. CITADEL TOWER - CONTINUOUS

Saren now faces Shepard.

SARENYou believe you can defeat them?

SHEPARDIf the galaxy unites, we can.

SARENThis galaxy won’t unite. It thrives on war, craves the blood of oppression and indifference.

SAREN (CONT'D)

SHEPARDYou’re wrong. It’s flawed, but not hopeless.

Saren pauses for a moment, his eyes gaze downward.

SARENMaybe you’re right, maybe there’s still a chance for--

Saren SCREAMS and grabs his head in AGONY.

SAREN (CONT’D)Sovereign is too strong! It’s too late.

Shepard walks toward Saren.

SHEPARDIt’s not too late.

SARENShepard...

Saren raises his weapon.

SAREN (CONT’D)(genuinely remorseful)

I’m sorry.

We hear a GUNSHOT, followed by a THUMP. Kaidan runs out of his cover toward Shepard.

Shepard stares forward in DISBELIEF.

ANGLE SAREN’S DEAD BODY.

Saren’s remaining soldiers ATTACK Shepard’s team. She and her team work together to take them out with relative ease.

Shepard approaches and ACTIVATES the MASTER CONTROL UNIT. She stares at SAREN’S BODY as she passes it.

SHEPARDVigil’s data file works. I have control of all systems.

GARRUSOpen the Citadel’s arms! Maybe the fleet can take Sovereign down!

KAIDANSee if you can open a communications channel.

Shepard opens all comm channels.

DESTINY ASCENSION NAVIGATOR (O.S.)--the Destiny Ascension. Main drives offline. Kinetic barriers down 40%! The Council is on board! I repeat, the Council is on board!

SHEPARDI’m here, Joker.

JOKER (O.S.)I’ve been trying to cover the Destiny Ascension, but we’re getting clobbered up here. I need an order now. Do I protect the Council or help the Alliance focus on Sovereign?

Sovereign GROANS as RED CURRENTS flash throughout its exterior hull, signaling its shields are down.

JOKER (O.S.)Hard on my flank! We’re going in!

Joker, followed by the Arcturus fleet, all simultaneously ATTACK Sovereign with everything they have. Sovereign EXPLODES. A large piece of its hull flies toward the Citadel Tower where Shepard and her team are.

INT. CITADEL TOWER - CONTINUOUS

Shepard’s eyes WIDEN as she sees the piece of hull about to crash into the Council Tower.

SHEPARD(screaming)

Go! Go! Go!

It crashes into the Tower, causing a MASSIVE EXPLOSION.

FADE TO BLACK.

INT. CITADEL TOWER - LATER

Anderson and ALLIANCE SOLDIERS BURST into the Citadel Tower.

ANDERSONSpread out and find them!

They spread out and SEARCH the area. One by one, they recover Shepard’s team. First Wrex, then Tali, then Liara, then Garrus, then Kaidan. All are badly INJURED, but alive. Anderson approaches Kaidan.

KAIDANWhere is she?

ANDERSONWe’re still looking, son.

They both look at the DESTRUCTION around them. Anderson helps Kaidan stand. Kaidan tries to LIMP toward where he last saw Shepard, but Anderson holds him back.

ANDERSON (CONT’D)Wait!

Shepard EMERGES from the rubble. She smiles as she walks toward Anderson and Kaidan. Kaidan EMBRACES her and Anderson pats her on the shoulder. They walk toward the rest of her team, who ENTHUSIASTICALLY greet her with embraces.

EXT. CITADEL PRESIDIUM - DAY

It’s a BEAUTIFUL day. LIGHT streams through the RUBBLE covering the Presidium. Shepard and Anderson walk through the Presidium and approach the Council and Ambassador Udina.

COUNCILOR TEVOSCommander Shepard, we have gathered here to recognize the enormous contributions of the Alliance forces in the battle against Sovereign and the Geth.

COUNCILOR VALERNMany courageous humans lost their lives to save the Citadel.

COUNCILOR SPARATUSThere is no greater sacrifice, and we share your grief over the tragic loss of so many noble men and women.

COUNCILOR TEVOSThe Council also owes you a great personal debt, Commander. One we can never repay. You saved not just our lives, but the lives of billions from Sovereign.

COUNCILOR VALERNYour heroic and selfless actions serve as a symbol of everything humanity stands for.

COUNCILOR SPARATUSAnd though we cannot bring back those valiant soldiers who gave their lives to save ours, we can honor their memories through our actions.

ANDERSONI’m honored, Councilor. As humanity’s representative, I’ll do everything in my power to help the Council rebuild.

COUNCILOR SPARATUSSovereign’s defeat marks the beginning of a new era for both humanity and the Council.

SHEPARDSovereign was only a vanguard. We’ve delayed them, but the Reaper fleet is still coming, and my team is going to stop them. I hope I can count on your support, given everything you’ve seen.

The Council members acknowledge Shepard with a SLIGHT NOD.

Shepard’s mind is lost in thought, a SLIGHT SMILE on her face. The elevator door OPENS to the Docking Bay. She approaches the Normandy and finds her team waiting for her.

KAIDANJoker’s getting antsy.

GARRUSThey just finished building the bar in the crew deck. We’re hoping to celebrate kicking Saren’s ass.

SHEPARDYou’re all staying?

LIARAIs there a greater cause than saving the galaxy?

TALIWith a kickass team like us?

SHEPARDNo, there isn’t.

(she smiles)Shall we?
