Statement from Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone Regarding the Supreme Court’s Decision

on Same Sex Marriage

Our Catholic faith upholds the dignity of every human person, including persons with same-sex attraction. At the same time, the Church sustains that marriage is a sacrament instituted by God, not by man or by institution, and can only be between one man and one woman. This teaching is not a judgment about persons who experience same-sex attraction, but a statement about how the Church has always understood the nature of marriage itself. It was disappointing to hear the Supreme Court’s ruling; however, its decision does not change the fact that the Roman Catholic Church has consistently taught and will continue to teach that marriage is a sacrament. It is a covenant of love between one man and one woman which bonds them for life and to any children that comes from the union. Every Supreme Court decision is limited in what it can achieve; again, this decision is no exception. It does not change the biological differences between male and female human beings or the requirements for the generation of human life, which still requires the participation of both. In addition, this decision of the court does not dispense us from the responsibility of civility and respect due every human being, whether a person agrees or disagrees with the decision. Nor is it a license for the use of venomous language or vile behavior against those whose opinions differ from our own. This decision confers a civil entitlement to some people who could not claim it before. It does not resolve the moral debate that preceded it and will most certainly continue in its wake. This decision has made my task as the pastor of this local diocesan church more complex as I continue to uphold the teachings of my Church on the Sacrament of Matrimony and the equal transcendent dignity of every human person.

St. Mary’s Parish News Scheduling of Events: Please note that all events that are to take place on St. Mary’s grounds must be submitted in writing to the Parish Secretary for approval by the Pastor. Events that have not been given approval do not end up on the Parish Calendar and may cause issues for other events that are already scheduled. This is especially important at St. Mary’s where we have a high volume of weddings with their rehearsals scheduled. It is also good to know who has been using the facilities. Father has found doors unlocked and lights and coffee pots still on. This causes a safety hazard. We want to ensure that there is a safe environment for all our parishioners and that they have priority. In scheduling your events in this way, events are anticipated so we can avoid last minute inconveniences. Thank you!

Wednesday Evening Confessions: There will be NO 5:30pm confessions during the Summer months. Confessions on Wednesday evenings will resume in the Fall.

Christmas in JulyCome to the Daughters of St. Paul Book Store on King Street for your Christmas shopping in July. Lydia’s Corner is an upscale Consignment Shop, a department of the Pauline Book and Media Center that is having a Christmas sale during the month of July. It has lots of great items that you can buy for your favorite friend or relative. The shop is open Wed. - Sat. 11am - 4pm, and the proceeds benefit the Daughters.

“America the Beautiful” O beautiful for spacious skies,

For amber waves of grain,For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain!America! America! God shed His grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhoodFrom sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for heroes provedin liberating strife,

who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life!

America! America! May God thy gold refine, till all success be nobleness,

and every gain divine.

O beautiful for patriot dreamthat sees beyond the years

thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears!

America! America! God mend thine every flaw, confirm thy soul in self-control,

thy liberty in law.
