There are also some minor simplifications to the instructions. By making masks we are trying to relieve the pressure on the shortage of the P2/N95 masks so they can be kept for use in high risk situations during this COVID-19 pandemic. The improvised masks, caps and other PPE made by the Masks for Mates have not been industry tested or approved. There is no guarantee that using them will prevent infection. P2/N95 Cover Mask Sewing Instructions

Step 2: Fold Fabric

Fold fabric right-side out making sure your edges are squared.

Step 3: Cut Binding and Ties

You will need 5 strips of fabric, each 4cm x 50cm long.

(Or, if you are cutting out of longer fabric you could cut 2 strips 4cm x 100cm and 1 strip 4cm x 50cm)

Step 4: Refold Fabric and Cut Mask Face

a. Fold the remaining fabric and pin the pattern on as shown below. (Make sure you fabric is squared.)

b. Cut out the pattern following the heavy lines. The dotted line should be aligned with the fold.

c. Cut out the notches. d. Cut a second piece of fabric using the pattern. Cut out the notches.

Step 5: Stack and Sew

a. Stack the 2 face mask pieces, face down (i.e. the right side of each fabric piece is face down. Pin together.

b. Sew together using approximately 1.5cm seam around all four sides.

Step 6: Iron in Pleats

a. With the top, pointed of the mask pointing away from you and right side of the fabric facing make a pleat using the notches as guidelines. The centre of the pleat = the centre of the two notches. The direction of the pleat should be to the bottom of the mask.

b. Pin the pleat into place. c. Repeat the process with the two other sets of notches so that you end up with 3

pleats in total. d. Once the pleats are ironed in the edges of the mask should measure 7.6 cm - give or

take a few mm.

Step 7: Sew Pleats in Place

Sew pleats into place using a 1.5cm seam. Sew the pleats on both Left and Right side of mask face.

Step 8: Mark and Sew Darts

a. Fold mask face in half at the center fold. Right side of fabric should be together and wrong side of fabric facing you.

b. Align pattern and mark top and bottom darts with pin or pencil. c. Sew along line.

Step 9: Trim Excess

a. Trim seams to 0.75cm.

Step 10: Prepare the Binding

a. Now time to bind! b. Take 2 strips and pin at 90 deg angles. Repeat with 2 more strips. c. Sew strips together at 45 deg angle. Trim seams at 0.75 cm inch and press with iron. d. Take 5th strip and cut in half.

Step 11: Attach Side Binding

a. With mask facing down - front side of fabric facing away, wrong side of fabric facing towards you - pin 4 cm binding you cut in half to left and right side of mask. Binding should be face down. Edge of binding aligned with outermost edge of mask.

b. Sew in place, starting just above top of mask and stopping just below bottom of mask, using 0.75 cm seam.

c. Press seam open with iron.

Step 12: Finish Side Binding

a. Flip mask over. Right side of fabric facing you. b. Fold 0.75 cm seam towards you from outside edge of binding. c. Wrap folded edge around side edge of mask. d. Pin in place. e. Sew along edge of binding. f. Repeat on other side. g. Trim excess.

Step 13: Attach Top/Bottom Binding

a. With mask face, wrong side of fabric facing you, pin 4 cm binding strips along top and bottom edges.

b. Sew in place using 0.75 cm seams. Start sewing just above one side of mask face and end just after opposite side of mask face.

c. Press open with iron.

Step 14: Finish Top/Bottom Binding and Ties

a. Trim ties even on both sides of mask. b. Iron in 0.75 cm seam on top and bottom of mask ties. c. Iron in 0.75 cm seam on end of mask ties. d. Fold ties in half and pin in place. e. Sew Binding and Ties.
