• The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an intergovernmental organisation focusing on renewable energies

• The overarching goal of IRENA is a rapid transition towards the widespread and sustainable use of renewable energy worldwide

• The Zayed Future Energy Prize recognises and inspires excellence in the innovation, development and implementation of sustainable energy solutions

• The prize honours the environmental stewardship legacy of the late Ruler of Abu Dhabi and Founding Father of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan

Zayed Future Energy Prize Winners

• The first Zayed Future Energy Prize was awarded in 2009 to Dipal Barua, who inspired one of the largest Solar PV programs in the world benefiting more than two million rural people all over Bangladesh

• The 2010 prize was awarded to the Toyota Motor Corporation. Toyota was singled out for its ground breaking fuel efficiency system in the third-generation Toyota Prius, the world’s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle
