Description:

The Poole House, constructed circa 1850, was previously surveyed by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) in 1976, 1982, and 1994, and was recommended for designation as a historic site by the M-NCPPC in the Master Plan for Historic Preservation. The main house is currently unaltered from its condition and appearance at the time of the previous survey. In addition to the main house discussed in the previous survey form, the property includes an outbuilding.

The outbuilding has an asphalt membrane gable roof, a wood frame floor and is supported by concrete block and brick columns at the corners.

Natlonal Register Evaluation:

The Poole House, constructed circa 1850, was previously surveyed by the Maryland-Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) and was recommended for designation as a historic site by the M-NCPPC in the Master Plan for Historic Preservation. However, the property is not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, as it has been extensively altered through the construction of a sunroom on the primary facade. It is not eligible under Criterion A or B, as it has no known association with historically significant persons or events. It does not meet Criterion C, as the material integrity of the structure has been severely compromised through the installation of replacement windows and unsympathetic siding material. Although the structure was part of the early settlement of Montgomery County, with the original log portion of the structure dating to 1850, later alterations have severely compromised the integrity of the structure, to the extent that the property no longer conveys any architectural or historic significance. Finally the property has no known potential to yield important information, and therefore, does not meet Criterion D.

The Poole House is a renovated two story frame I-house located on an approximately one-acre site just off Belle Cote Drive. The building has a simple L-plan with a two story rectangular core and one and one­half story rear ell. It is side-gabled with redwood clapboard walls and has a composition shingle roof.

The building's principle elevation faces west overlooking Belle Cote Drive and is syrmnetrical, three-bays in width, and one-bay in depth. A modern one story sun porch has been added to this elevation. The attached one and one-half story rear ell has a 2/3 Georgian plan, side entrance, and is two bays long and one-bay wide. A recent one-story shed roofed addition infills the L. The first floor and second story windows of the main core are rectangular and have double-hung sash with six-over-six lights. The gable end and wing facades feature the same window type, but it is not repeated in a strict syrmnetrical pattern. The ell has smaller four-over-four windows on the second level and a simple entry.

Summary:

The Poole House, originally built as a log 2/3 Georgian house ca. 1850 (now the rear ell) with an I-house frame addition around 1885, no longer conveys its architectural or historical significance as a vernacular farmhouse. It was extensively renovated in the 1980s updating the house into a rustic suburban residence.

Local tradition holds that the house was usedAa tenant house by Louis Duvall, owner and builder of the nearby Duvall/Kruhm house (Master Plan site #15/60). The Poole house neither represents a distinctive type, period, and method of historic design or construction nor does it convey its historical associations with the Duvall family and their role in the settlement of the area.

Chain of Title/Owner Information:

The original one and one-half story log section of the Poole House House was probably built by farmer William Stabler sometime prior to the Civil War. The farm was purchased by Louis Duvall in 1877 for $700 and is believed to have been used by his tenants. In 1884 Louis and his wife Mary Duvall sold the property, comprised of tracts known as "Holmes Residence," "Bear Bacon," and "Bachelor's Adventure," to Thomas Duvall for $700. Thomas Duvall had previously acquired 25 1/2 acres from Richard Wilcox in 1881, so with the 1884 purchase expanded his farm to 61 1/2 acres. He soon added a frame I-house addition to the west of the log section, which was converted at this time to an ell. In 1904 Thomas Duvall sold the house and acreage to Thomas Poole for $1500. The house was sold by Poole in 1922 and after being passed through a succession of owners was reacquired by the Poole family (Kenneth and Debby Poole, Jr.) in recent years.

rear kitchen wing, which may be of log, probably predates

the main block; the west foundation wall of this win; I

1'he Poole house is significant as an example of vernacular architecture typical to that constructed in Montgomery County from the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries. The original one and a half story log section of the house (wha.: is now the rear wing) is believed to have been a tenant house for Louis Duvall's farm, possibly built during the early ~)art of the nineteenth cent'trY .1 Louis purchased the 37 acre farm from Wil­liam Stabler in August of 1877 for $700. 2 The house sits on tracts of land refe®d to as "Holmes Residence", "Bear Bacon", and 11 Bach­lor' s Adventure. 11

. In January of 1884, Louis jnd his wife Mary Jane sold the farm to Thomas Duvall for $700. 'i.' cmi:.:-: et"'ded 25 1/2 acres purchased from Richardson Wilcox in 1881, bringing the total acreage to 61 1/2. 4 The later addition t.o the west end, what is now the main block of the house, ':Jas probably added by Thomas in the 1880's or 1890's.

In December of 1904, Thomas sold the house and 62 1/2 acres to Thomas E. Poole for $1500. 5 In June of 1922, Thomas Poole sold the house and it went through a su:t::ession of owners (decreasing in acreage) until it was purchased by Jerome and V Lrginia Harris, the present owners, in 1969. The house now sits on o.806 acres.6
