From the ChairmanSwitching things up a bit for my report this month...rather than rambling for half a page I

am going to have a Q&A with Mich Hancock, from 100th Monkey Media, on how to make the most of your Chamber Membership when it comes to social media. Mich has recently taken over our social media for MHCC.

BD: We have all seen companies that “Spam” the various sites with their advertising. What is a better way to do this?

MH: Social media is less about advertising and more about creating your marketing message; share information about yourself and your company, equally as important is to participate in the posts made by others – this combination works together to provide a fuller picture

of who you are and what you do.

BD: What should our members post?

MH: I always talk about the “magical mix” – post about you, your company activities, share relevant information to help us all become better at our businesses, share community events, throw in a bit of fun and wit and you will go a long way.

BD: Posting to our pages is reserved for members, but non members will occasionally post. Should members interact with them or simply notify the MHCC.

MH: We will be monitoring the pages, but by all means if someone sees a post by a non-member, contact the MHCC office so that the company can be contacted. We simply need to let them know that they may participate, but they must be a member to do so.

BD: What are some social media best practices?

MH: Think of it as an online networking meeting. Be courteous, act as a cheerleader for your colleagues by liking, sharing, commenting, or re-tweeting their posts, share your favorite blogs, and let us know how we can help you get the word out about a new product, service or event. It is all about engagement and consistency; you must consistently take part in order to get anything out of it.

BD: Any pointers to our members on how to make this happen?

MH: Make it a point to check the chambers’ pages each week and comment/share/retweet! A few times a month, post updates about you and your business. Feel free to post pictures and links. Give us all an opportunity to get to know you better.

You heard it from an expert – participation is key. Looking forward to “seeing” more of you on:

Police Officers Honored with Star of Life AwardMaryland Heights Police Officers Jim Vinyard and Tom Venegoni were recently honored with the Bronze Star of Life award from the Maryland Heights Fire Protection District for their roles in saving two citizens’ lives earlier this year.

On May 2, Officer Vinyard responded to a 911 call for a cardiac/respiratory arrest at a Maryland Heights residence. When he arrived on the scene, he found Catherine Adams unconscious and unresponsive. She was not breathing and had no pulse. Her family told Vinyard she had collapsed after being struck by a large piece of hail. He treated her with the portable Automated External Defibrillator (AED) stored in all Maryland Heights police cars and then began administering CPR. When firefighters and paramedics arrived, they built on Vinyard’s lifesaving actions and began intravenous access, cardiac medications and advanced airway management. While en route to the hospital, paramedics were able to restore Adams’ pulse, breathing and blood pressure. She later made a full recovery at DePaul Hospital.

On June 2, emergency dispatchers took a 911 report of a cardiac/respiratory arrest in a vehicle on I-270. Officer Venegoni was the first responder to arrive at the scene, where he found Roy Oakes slumped over the steering wheel, not breathing and with no

pulse. Venegoni used the AED to administer shocks to Oakes and then began CPR. Paramedics and firefighters that arrived on the scene moments later continued these efforts and began advanced cardiac life support. Adams regained normal breathing, blood pressure and pulse while en route to DePaul Hospital, where he later made a full recovery.

A statement by the Maryland Heights Fire Protection District Board of Directors praised the officers for their “quick and confident actions” that “significantly impacted the chances of Adams’ and Oakes’ survival and ultimately their overall recovery. According to the American Heart Association, the officers began the first vital links in the ‘chain of survival,’ which starts with early defibrillation and CPR.”

MoDOT’s I-270 @ Dorsett/ Page Project AwardWe are very pleased to announce the I-270 and Dorsett Page Project has been selected as one of the top ten projects in the county through the America’s Transportation Awards Competition as administered by AASHTO – the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

The project is now a finalist for the 2012 People’s Choice Award. On-line voting is open to the public at http://www.americastransportationaward.org/

Each person (e-mail address) can vote up to 10 times a day, so please vote often for the I-270 Dorsett Page project. The voting is open through Friday, October 19.

35-35th Street Weekend Schedule ImprovedEffective Sunday, Sept. 30, The Metro’s 35-35th Street will be extended to Westport and the Country Club Plaza and offer more frequent service on Saturday and Sunday.

35-35th St. will provide service to Westport Rd., Belleview, Madison and 47th St., replacing a portion of the route currently served by 51-Broadway. This change provides a new link along Westport Road between Belleview and Main St. and across the Plaza along 47th St.

On weekdays, buses will continue to offer service every 30 minutes during the day and hourly at night. On weekends, 35-35th St. buses will run every 45 minutes instead of hourly.

North County Celebrates Young Talent at NCI Salutes 30 Leaders in their Thirties
