MCDA Officers Attend ACA Leadership InstitutePresident Michelle Carroll, President-Elect Lakeisha Mathews and Secretary Paula Brand attended the ACA Leadership Institute in Alexandria, VA in July. The Leadership Institute is an annual training event where leaders of ACA and all of its supporting divisions come together to learn best leadership practices and to network with colleagues on a national level. MCDA’s elected leaders learned about the structure of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and MCDA’s relation to it. MCDA is a division of the Maryland Counseling Association (MCA) a.k.a. the Maryland Association of Counseling and Development (MACD) which is a state branch of ACA. MCDA is also a state branch of the National Career Development Association, which is a Division of ACA. Understanding these relationships is important to the proper organization of our professional association.

Workshops and Events attended by MCDA Leaders:

Understanding and Navigating the ACA Structure- Holly Club ACA Director of Leadership Services

Membership Round Robin by Denise Brown ACA Membership Director

Read Carefully Before You Sign- Robin Hayes Director of Conference and Meeting Services

Social Media: Why You Need to Be Playing in the Sand Box by ACA staff

Recruiting Volunteers through the Creation of a Diverse and Inclusive Environment-Presented by Alexis Terry and Richard Yep

Successful Marketing on a Tight Budget- by Richard Yep, ACA Executive Director

Ethical Counseling Practice in a Technology Oriented Society: What ACA Leaders Need to Know- by Dr. Howard Smith

Board Meeting, Not Bored Meetings: Keeping Participants Engaged by Lynn Linde ACA Immediate Past President

Involving Students and New Professionals- Idea Swap

Legislative Visit to Capitol Hill- participants had the opportunity to visit with their state elected officials to discuss important issues facing the counseling profession and to request action. Participants were prepped on issues and suggested talking points.

The event was well organized and leaders throughout the national ACA structure were in attendance. MCDA leaders were able to build a supportive network and glean valuable resources to help prepare them to be successful leaders. If you would like to be a leader within MCDA, and be afforded the opportunity to attend this type of event, please contact Michelle Carroll at [email protected]

Take Multitasking to a Whole New Level Working with nontraditional adult learners has made it necessary to discuss what I call goal concurrence. This is a term that may require an explanation and I have chosen a few examples to get my point across. For instance, I work mostly with adult learners that are juggling a full time job, family life and their education. This leaves little time to focus on their career development. Therefore, when counseling a client, we talk about a career development plan that incorporates everything outside their paid experience to become a concurrent career development goal; by investigating those activities that they participate in as a routine. For example, if a client describes his/her involvement in a volunteer capacity, we discuss how this opportunity could provide a career development opportunity. We discuss the value of project management, (planning fund raising events) and negotiation and relationship building (soliciting donations) just to name two obvious takeaways from volunteerism. Often, our clients, in their zeal to give back to their community do not connect the WIFFM (what’s in it for me) and how it can apply to their career development plan.

A second area that we need our clients to focus on is developing and knowing about “GURU “networks within their organization. Helping our clients identify and understand these resource pipelines are an overlooked aspect of career counseling, and not intentionally; time, money and resources do not allow career counselors the luxury of discussing this aspect of career development as a concurrent goal. But, it is very important to the client when it comes to making their mark at work. Those individuals that know and understand how things get done in their organization (GURU networks) are much more likely to achieve recognition and promotional opportunities. Merely viewing an organizational chart can lift your clients GQ (GURU quotient) and make a difference in obtaining the “STAR” factor at work.

Another important concurrent goal is lifelong learning. Advise a client that is preparing to graduate or transition careers to get involved in learning opportunities to stay ahead of the changes within their industry. At Peirce College, we inform our paralegal graduates that this can be done by joining a local professional affiliation like the Philadelphia Association of Paralegals(PAP). This organization hosts an education conference each year that is world class in subject and content that is relevant to the legal field. For clients that are more generic in their interests, Toastmasters is an organization that fosters leadership acumen in its members along with improving their public speaking abilities. For minority students there are professional affiliations like the organization NSHMBA, National Organization of Hispanic MBA’s, and you don’t have to be Hispanic or have an MBA to join. Make sure your client checks out the organizations’ vision or mission statement and attends a meeting as a guest, to make sure it is a good fit for their career development.

Finally, every action, event or activity is a concurrent goal that can become a career development opportunity if we view it and position it as such for our clients. Volunteering for an organization now becomes not only a way to give back, but a concurrent opportunity to learn project management and negotiation skills. If we direct our clients to take the mindset that the inherent value of the action, event or activity can become a value added for their career development it will take the notion of multitasking to a whole new level.
