TECTONIC STUDIES
This project was five week study of fan vaults as a tectonic system in different mediums. We first studied the true form of the tectonic system, then began to “misbehave” the system by playing with scale, distorting, skewing, and emphasizing certain elements of the system. I began this assignment by 3D modeling the true form of a ribbed fan vault sytem in Rhino, then rotating, multiplying, and layering ribs in different ways to create new geometries. These variations of 3D model were then translated into drawings, a 3D powder print, and a CNC milling. Some scale studies were then conducted, to quickly investigate how people could potentially inhabit these geometries at different scales.

MT. AIRY CAMP
This project is a summer camp facility located in Cincinnati’s Mount Airy park. The starting point for this design was to apply the new formal understandings that we gained from our tectonic studies to a full scale structure. We were encouraged to investigate the site, construction methods, and program requirements in great depth, and let these investigations further inform the design.

CONSTRUCTION METHODSRibs are constructed as a series of tubes that come together in custom brackets that are cemented into foundation footings. These tubes have flanges into which opaque or glazed panels can be bolted. The heights and density of the tubes are based off of the slopes of the site and where extra density is needed structurally and programatically. Although there is tubing throughout the structure, each opening between tubes isn’t necessarily filled with a panel, some are left open to allow for sunlight and airflow during the spring and summer months.

ROWHOUSE
A row house for client Louis Langree, Director of the Cincinnati Orchesta, located on the Ohio River with views of the Cincinnati skyline. We were encouraged to investigate precedents of existing rowhouses to gain a basic understanding of this typology and then apply this understanding to our own designs. The driving design idea for my design was separating public/entertaining spaces from more private areas using a light well.

ART CONCENTRATIONA series of drawing, photography, printmaking and mixed media pieces studying the decaying infrastructure in my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. I documented buildings, bridges, and neighborhoods around me and their various states of abandonment, deterioration, destruction, and neglect. I then began to maipulate my photo and drawing documentation in order to highlight the beauty that I found in the process of aging and decay in individual structures and the city as a whole.
