Biographical/Historical note

Dr. Mary V. Moore (1921-2000) was a successful and accomplished businesswoman in Detroit. One often children, she was born in North Carolina to Oreatha and Odell Moore. She earned several degreesfrom Wayne State University (WSU) and cosmetology institutions. In 1974, Mary Moore graduatedfrom Wayne State University with a degree in Vocational and Applied Arts Education. Additionally, sheearned a M.A. in cosmetology from the National Institute of Cosmetology (NIC), and completed beautytraining at Calumet School of Beauty Culture, Ruby’s Beauty University, and Mary Hall Academy.During her educational career at NIC, she served as President of the North End Beauticians League andthe Basileus of XI Chapter of the Theta Nu Sigma National Sorority. To further her cosmetology training, she completed advanced studies with Virginia Farrell (Detroit) and Robert Fiance in New York. Shewas an accomplished cosmetology instructor, educating students at Jefferson Jr. High School, MurrayWright High School, and the National Institute of Cosmetology. In the cosmetology profession, Dr.Moore’s leadership was demonstrated through her civic and professional involvement. She served as theDean of the National Institute of Cosmetology (1962), President of the Wolverine State CosmetologyAssociation (1972), President of the National Beauticians Culturalists’ League (NBCL), board memberfor the Michigan Council of Cosmetology, chairman of the Advisory Board of Romulus, and examinationconsultant at Wayne State University. In addition to her professional contributions, she was an activemember of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and St. PhillipsLutheran church. In the cosmetology field, she has worked as a technician at Summit Laboratories, a hairstylist for Clairol Inc., and was the co-owner of the Charm Center in Detroit.

Scope and Contents note

The Mary V. Moore Collection is primarily composed of visual materials and ephemera, with 2 cubicfeet of manuscripts spanning a period from 1960-1999. The collection reflects Dr. Moore’s involvementwithin the cosmetology profession, her dedication to her teaching career in Detroit Public Schools, and her career at the Charm Center. The manuscript collection is primarily composed of publicationsfrom professional cosmetology organizations, Dr.'s Moore's teaching materials, and Charm Centerorganizational documents. The manuscript collection contains several limitations: an expansive andintimate reflection of Dr. Moore's personal life, and Dr. Moore's involvement with the NAACP. However, documents that reflect Dr. Moore's personal life are primarily located in the correspondence, speeches, coursework, and obituaries. Also, the obituaries are a reflection of her connection to the community;containing important biographical information about local artists, colleagues, friends, and familymembers. The visual materials and ephemera reflect Dr. Moore's participation and involvement in thecosmetology profession: annual beauty pageants, trade shows, conventions, award ceremonies, CharmCenter, and documentation of student work. The general subject areas covered in the collection are:

Restricted Material

Box 13 is restricted for use due to its fragile condition. It will be open for use once it has been processedand preserved by CHWMAAH's Preservation Department.

Appraisal note

The Mary V. Moore collection contains important materials for researchers interested in AfricanAmerican entrepreneurship, and cosmetology. Dr. Moore’s extensive involvement in the cosmetologyprofession and field provides materials ranging from the 1960s to the mid-1990s. In the collection, visual materials are the strongest and most comprehensive. The ephemera and photographs reflect arange of subjects: cosmetology standards, ideas, and ideologies of the time, the documentation of beautyconventions, tradeshows, contests, student work, and Dr. Moore’s family and church life. Manuscriptsdevise a smaller percentage of the collection, and primarily reflect Dr. Moore’s involvement in thecosmetology profession and field. The manuscript collection is primarily comprised of cosmetologyassociation publications for conventions and tradeshows. The manuscript series lacks documentationin several key areas: Dr. Moore's personal papers, oragnizational meeting minutes, documents, andnotes to preserve the institutional memory of professional cosmetology associations. More in-depthartifacts that document the internal politics and affairs of the NIC, NBCL,WSCA, and Moore’s personalpapers would enhance the collection. The greatest reflection of Dr. Moore’s personal thoughts andreflections are contained within the correspondence. The obituaries are key artifacts that reflect Moore'sdiverse connection to members of the community. Within the CHWMAAH, the Mary V. Moorecollection complements the Walter Lawrence Smith Photography Collection; relating to importantsocial and political issues surrounding the politics of Black women’s hair, beauty culture, body politics, entrepreneurship, consumer citizenship, and cosmetology standards and methodologies.
