2 March 22, 2020

Dear Mary Star Parishioners: We are celebrating “Laetare" Sunday. Holy Mother Church gives us this wonderful time to remind us that Lent is almost over, that we are moving closer to Holy Week and the Easter Mysteries. So we should be joyful and rejoice in the Lord for Our Redemption is near at hand. Below is a continuation of some thoughts on the spiritual benefits of a good

confession written by a Parish priest. If we haven’t already, perhaps we can take advantage of this marvelous sacrament during the remainder of this holy season. Have a Blessed Week. Fr. Harrigan Pastor “We’re plowing our way through the season of Lent. For many of us, the only difference we notice about this season is the fish sandwiches that suddenly appear on restaurant menus. Yet this is a grace-filled season for those who try to live it well. It’s a season when we are invited to spend more time in prayer, to fast, and to give more generously to the poor. It’s a time when the services in our churches take on a more somber, simple feel. We, in a way, journey with Jesus in the desert before he begins his grueling ministry which culminates with the cross and his resurrection. When we live Lent well, we find ourselves to be better people at Easter, people less attached to the things of the world, people more generous to others, and who feel more regret for our sins. Here, I want to focus on that last item: regret for our sins. I realize many of the readers of this column are not Catholic, and they probably think it’s strange that Catholics “go to confession,” and tell their sins to priests. During Lent, in fact, Catholics do quite a lot of confessing. We get together by the hundreds to line up and speak aloud, in private, our misdeeds. As one who goes to confession often (yes, us priests go to confession just like everyone else), I can say that the practice is very comforting. Often there is a peace and serenity when leaving the confessional that can’t be found elsewhere. That’s because the Catholic Church understands God has given this sacrament as a conduit of his forgiveness. In a very real way, when we speak our sins aloud in the presence of the priest, it is to Jesus that we are telling our sins. And it is his power to forgive that we encounter in the confessional. Yet, even on a natural level, confession is a great tool for improving our lives. Take the example of gossip. If we have a bad habit of gossip, being required to periodically admit, out loud, that we are terrible gossips, and to reflect on how our words might have harmed someone, really will help us to leave that bad habit behind. Also on a natural level, when we’ve done something wrong, I think we feel some compulsion to admit it. Confession offers us a completely private forum to talk about these misdeeds. But even more important than that, we hear the priest speaking in the person of Jesus say “I absolve you from your sins,” and because it’s a sacrament of the Church, we trust that the words have real power to impart God’s mercy. We can see that this is real. Go into any Catholic Church and watch the people in line for confession. Having taken stock of their misdeeds, they often look nervous and embarrassed. Then watch people as they walk out of the confessional. If they’ve confessed well, they often walk out as if a huge load had been lifted from their shoulders. What, though, is the basis for this practice? When Jesus appeared to his disciples after the resurrection, John writes, he “said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained’” (John 20:21-23). We also read, in the Letter of James,

Page 3: MARY STAR OF THE SEA › 2559 › bulletins › ...2020/03/22  · say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful

March 22, 2020 3

From The Pastor‘s Desk Continued... that presbyters (the priests) of the Church share in Jesus’ power of forgiveness (James 5:13-15) and that one is to “confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed” (James 5:16). In the First Letter of John, too, we read that “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:8-9).

The Catholic Church has always understood that “confess,” here refers to the Sacrament of Confession the Church still celebrates today. The Didache, which is a sort of early Christian “church manual,” probably written around the year 50 A.D., explains that “… every Lord’s day gather yourselves together and break bread and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure.” Saint Basil of Caesarea, in the 4th Century, wrote that “It is necessary to confess our sins to those to whom the dispensation of God’s mysteries has been entrusted [the presbyters]. Those doing penance of old are found to have done it before the saints. It is written in the Gospel that they confessed their sins to John the Baptist; but in the Acts they confessed to the apostles, by whom also all were baptized.”

Lastly, Pope Francis once said that “The confessional is not a torture chamber, but the place in which the Lord’s mercy motivates us to do better.” Amen to that! May all of us Catholics seek God’s mercy in the confessionals during Lent. May all of our Protestant brethren, too, better understand what we Catholics do in confession, and may we all be better people when Easter arrives.”

Pope Francis’ Prayer to the Virgin Mary for Protection

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

LITURGICAL ACCOMODATIONS DURING THE SUSPENSION OF THE PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS DUE TO COVID-19 HEALTH THREAT

The current public health emergency has brought about fears and anxiety in the hearts and minds of many people. However, it has also unified us as a people seeking the good for the other. In these trying times, faith is to be lived with reason, prudence, and wise judgment.

Therefore, in order to help priests perform their ministry with faith, prudence, and wise judgment, the Archbishop in consultation with the Auxiliary Bishops and the Council of Priests have established the following liturgical accommodations. These accommodations are to be followed until further notice. MASS

The public celebration of Mass has been suspended in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles effective March 17, 2020 until March 29, 2020, or otherwise extended.

Parishes are invited to inform their parishioners of opportunities to view the Mass via live stream. The weekday and Sunday Mass will be live streamed from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angles via the LA Catholics Facebook page (facebook.com/lacatholics). For more information on additional Mass broadcasts on TV and radio, visit lacatholics.org/emergency.

Priests are reminded to encourage the faithful to keep the Lord’s Day holy. Some ways to do this include: reading the Gospels, praying with your families, and to joining yourself to the sacrifice of the Mass by making an act of spiritual communion. CONFESSION Parishes are asked to cancel all Lenten penance services. However, priests are asked to continue offering the Sacrament of Confessions will be offered @ 4:00pm on Saturdays

ANOINTING OF THE SICK

Priests are to attend to the needs of those who ask for the Anointing of the Sick. Priests attending to the needs of the sick are to observe all proper sanitary protocols and, if necessary, check-in with proper medical personnel before entering the room of the patient.

For the time being, sick calls and distribution of Holy Communion for the homebound are reserved to priests only.

Priests are asked to clean and refresh their oil stocks before visiting the sick.

BAPTISM

Unless an emergency, the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism is to be postponed.

Commendation” (also known as the “graveside”). No Funeral Masses may be said. If desired by the family, a memorial Mass can be scheduled appropriately at a later date.

“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” ~

Alan Watts This time last year, our Technology Integration

Program was delivering iPads to students in classrooms and providing teachers with professional development for App use and instructional design. Our MSSE Family was full of hope and excitement and grateful for the C3Ignite program from the L.A. Archdiocese.

Now, a year later, our students have been using the iPads to learn, communicate and create in their classes. While our goal was to integrate technology into our curriculum, to prepare our students for their future, we had no way of predicting that their skills would be called into action a year later. In a time of so much change, our students and staff are ready to move forward with the deployment of our Class2Cloud Online Education Program.

Starting each day with a video gathering of all K - 8 students and teachers online for morning prayers and announcements has given our Family a sense of normalcy and reassurance. Teachers have been working in their online classrooms creating engaging and rigorous lessons, just like they do in our normal classrooms. As we continue on this educational journey, we will face many challenges and learn by taking risks and trying new things. We are reminded in Deuteronomy, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.” It is with this hope and faith that we find strength to continue to provide for our students.

We hope to resume classes on campus March 31. This means that our Open House for prospective and current families has been postponed to a date in April/May. If you have been thinking about joining our family, or know someone that has, please visit our website and call the office to schedule a phone appointment. Even now we are open to welcoming new families!

The Jog-a-Thon, one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, is still scheduled for April 3, however we will re-schedule if necessary. If you would like to donate and continue to support our school by investing in our new K-5 Social Studies curriculum, Science Lab supplies, or new desks and chairs, please visit https://www.marystarelementary.com/apps/form/JogaThon Thank you for your continued support and prayers for our MSSE Family. Know that we are praying for all of you as well. God Bless, Mr. Cordero

March 22, 2020 7

In today’s gospel Jesus and his disciples come across a blind man and they ask Jesus why he is blind. They wonder if the man has done

something wrong – or if his parents has – to make him born blind. And Jesus surprises them; he tells them that the man’s blindness is part of God’s plan. God has chosen this man to help people understand who Jesus was. So Jesus performs a miracle … he heals the man and he can SEE for the very first time. The man who has received his sight challenges the crowd who are shocked and the disbelieving Pharisees by saying: “Jesus opened the eyes of a person born blind. Can’t YOU see? It’s as plain as day. Why can’t YOU see? Jesus came from God. No one but God has the power to do what Jesus did.” The Pharisees refused to move out of their darkness and ignorance of the truth. By contrast the blind man saw Jesus and accepted him as the Messiah the LIGHT of the world, giving us all an example of receiving God with JOY and ENTHUSIASM. Am I willing to SEE how Jesus is present in my life? ADULT FAITH FORMATION on Tuesday March 17 at 7:00 pm in the church for parents who have children preparing for First Communion. The topic is LENT. Did You Know? Sabia Usted? Early abuse identification is key

We can do our best to ensure that the children in our community are as safe as possible, and one critical way is to take immediate action at the first hint of improper behavior by an adult towards a child. Be familiar with ways in which perpetrators attempt to groom children, their parents, and church communities so that you can recognize and interrupt such behaviors promptly. Paying attention to changes in behavior, appetite, or demeanor in the children we know is also important as these cues may be reflective of a child’s distress. For more information, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Early Identification is Crucial” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/ Es muy importante reconocer el abuso a tiempo
