A COUPLE THOUGHTS FOR CHALLENGING TIMES

On Thursday, we celebrate the feast of St. Teresa of Avila, a Carmelite nun who lived in the 16th century Spain. As we gear up for what could be a long winter, I thought two of her insights might be appropriate to keep in mind in the coming months. The first is a prayer of hers that is a favorite of mine:

Let nothing disturb you, Let nothing frighten you.

All things are passing away: God never changes.

Patience obtains all things Whoever has God lacks nothing;

God alone suffices.

It is a gentle reminder that God is in control, even when we don’t feel like he is, and that no situation, regardless how bad, lasts forever. All things will pass in God’s time. Sometimes there are things in our lives that we cannot change, and the best we can do is just be patient and wait in the Lord until they pass. While we are waiting, it is sometimes a good practice to think of all the times in the past that we thought things would not pass, but they did. Instead of thinking of negative possible outcomes, focusing on past positive results puts our head in a better place and gives us something hopeful to contemplate.

The second thought on St. Teresa comes in the form of a story. On a particularly stormy day she was returning to the convent and slipped and fell into a puddle of mud. Looking up to heaven, she cried out to God: “If this is how you treat your friends, it is no wonder you have so few of them!” Sometimes in the midst of a bad day, all you need is a sense of humor to realize the absurdity of the situation. A lighthearted outlook can often turn our attitude, as well as our day, around. These two thoughts prove to be good reminders that patience and a little humor can help us through challenging times. God Bless, Father Mark Pavlik
