A magical celebration inspired by one of the world’s most loved storytellers!

Celebrate NAIDOC week with storytelling and song that shares the living narrative of our nation.

To truly immerse yourself in the stories of our City, take some time to explore Maryborough’s Story Trails – either by a self-guided walk or our digital trail app, or take an evening guided tour led by a member of the ancient guild of storytellers.

Discover the art of storytelling!

Cr Chris Loft – Mayor

Maryborough is a town steeped in history. Our heritage streetscapes and original wharf precinct practically hum with the stories that they hold!

We pride ourselves as artisans of storytelling – sharing our stories through art and finding imaginative and creative ways to keep them alive. They are, after all, what connects us to our place and inspire us to dream of our future.

This year’s Festival presents a two week program of storytelling for all ages through all art forms. From music concerts backstage and onstage at the Brolga to pop up performances in the Bond Store Basement.

Our artists share their stories through exhibitions and public art installations. Walk the streets and search the rooftops for some very special new surprises!

The much-loved Mary Poppins in the Park event on Saturday 2 July includes a colourful range of activities and events for children and families including some very special regional touring programs from Out of The Box Children’s Festival.

THE QUESTION of where PL Travers drew her inspiration for Mary Poppins is

the subject of much speculation.

For Travers, stories were not just something you created, but should be captured out of the writer’s rich store of the imagination and the fragments of dreams and memories from when very young.

It is hard to know how much of her first early impressions of life in Maryborough, as well as the stories told to her by her parents, influenced her dreams and imagination and made their way into her famous novels.

What is certain is that you can easily discover some of the incredible connections between Travers’ Mary Poppins and the Maryborough of old.

Her heritage-listed birthplace remains largely unchanged from her time of birth – as do the streetscapes and parklands near her original home.

Just like Jane and Michael – with a spoon full of imagination and Maryborough’s old fashioned streets as the setting – you can jump into the magical world of Mary Poppins.

”If you are looking for autobiographic facts, Mary Poppins is the story of my life.” PL Travers

A very special mentionTHE PROUD MARYS are an international association for women whose name contains Mary or a derivative. The organisation was formed in Maryborough in 1999 with a small band of volunteers determined to raise the profile of Maryborough as the birthplace of PL Travers. Their annual Mary Morning Tea was the catalyst for the Mary Poppins Festival, believed to be the first in the world in honour of Mary Poppins and her creator. The Proud Mary members were also the driving force behind the Mary Poppins statue, erected in Richmond Street in 2005 outside the author’s birthplace (which for the first time in years is open to the public).

2016 Mary Poppins Poetry Literary Competition

An annual literary competition that inspires the imagination of Fraser Coast regional school students to embrace their creative writing skills and share their stories.

over $1,800 in prize money to be won!

Endorsed by the Cherry Tree Foundation, trustees of PL Travers' will trust.Entry details to be announced at the festival.

Maryborough Match Making Machine An imagined history public artwork by Russell Anderson

from 29 JUN Corner Wharf and Richmond Streets

In the mid to late 1800’s, 154 immigration ships delivered 22,000 people to the Port of Maryborough, including many young unmarried women. It was not long before the colonial bachelors of Maryborough eagerly pursued these ladies in courtship.

In 1862, an enterprising ad salesman at the local paper struck on an idea to provide a one-stop-shop for both match-making and marriage licensing. To keep costs down, the process was automated and a match-making apparatus was installed on the footpath down by the docks. This machine has recently been recovered from storage and reinstalled in its rightful place. Bring your partner and test if you are indeed a true match!
