For your reflection • Para su reflexión…
We hear heroic cases of people offering their lives for the sake of others, even when they do not need to. Why? It seems that when someone wants something so much, no matter the sacrifice or the effort, they are willing to pay the price. The young man in the gospel story today seemed to want to do the right thing. More importantly he said he wanted “to inherit eternal life.” He had riches. He had acquired much while faithfully following the commands of God. Now he wanted to do something that would ensure his eternal life in heaven. When he learned that the price was his material wealth on Earth, he was saddened. He wanted everything. Where was his heart, really? The young man wanted eternity, but he closed the door to following Jesus. Jesus is the living Word of God that gives wisdom for life and saves us! The man was left alone with his material wealth, without reaching true wealth, because, deep down, he did not want it. In life, there are many times we give up one thing to gain something we want more. Countless people have left their countries, their families, and their homes, to reach something that seemed more important. Jesus invites us to leave everything in order to put ourselves at the service of others. That supposes a level of generosity that goes beyond money. If we really want to find God and the right path, we will realize that we are not losing anything after all, because we have received everything. Do not let the riches of this world hold us to something that will end. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

To think about… What do you count as riches?
What is the desire of your heart?
Does it match the way of following Christ?
