ELS110 How children learn, and how they learn language 9781099107504

A sound understanding of how children learn and how they learn a first and second language is key to effective language learning. In this highly interactive module, participants will have the opportunity to consider and compare their ideas about how children learn and how they learn language. They will then reflect on the possible implications of this knowledge for their classroom teaching. Participants will examine different materials and teaching resources to better understand how they embodies these principles, and will engage in the practical task of developing and subsequently presenting a new lesson plan, thus putting theory to practice.

ELS111 Social Emotional Learning and 21st Century Skills 9781099107511 Social and Emotional Learning and 21st Century Competencies are playing an

important role in language learning. This module focuses on the importance of nurturing children’s social and emotional skills, and of developing in them skills that will help them succeed in the future. The module looks closely at what these skills are, and how best they can be taught and practised. Participants will also have the opportunity to examine their own skills and competencies within this complex yet important area, and will be given the chance to reflect on areas of improvement they can make within themselves, as educators.

ELS121 Managing Classrooms Effectively 9781099107610 Good classroom management paves the way for teachers to engage the students

in learning. Without it, even the best curriculum can fail. This module looks at the importance of classroom management from both teacher and student perspectives. An overview of various classroom management models and options is presented and discussed, and the role of reflective practice is considered. Factors that can positively affect the smooth running of a lesson are examined, and ways to create a conducive learning environment are discussed and shared. Participants will also have the opportunity to share the particular challenges they face with regards classroom management, and discuss possible solutions that might facilitate a better teaching and learning experience for all.

Foundational Skills of Language Learning ELS101 Foundational Skills of Language Learning: Listening 9781099105616 The predominant language art as it is any human’s first exposure to language,

listening is the crucial connection to learning. This module will equip the teachers with the basic knowledge and skills to teach their students perception and recognition of sounds and words in context, help them to develop appropriate and constructive listening attitudes and behaviour active listening as opposed to passive listening). The Class Audio will also expose them to a wide variety of listening texts and situations where they learn to use prior knowledge to understand a speaker’s purpose and respond appropriately (speaking skill).

ELS114 Different Approaches to Phonics Instruction 9781099107542 In this module, participants will consider three different approaches to phonics

instruction – synthetic, analytic and embedded. Each of these approaches will be examined in detail, and will be ‘tried out’ and evaluated by participants through a series of interactive activities which enable them to experience each approach as a learner. Participants will be made aware of how each approach to teaching phonics can support the development of literacy skills in 4-7 year old children. They will also consider the benefits of a blended approach, bearing in mind the diverse needs and learning styles of different learners. Participants’ own questions about phonics instruction will be identified and collated during this session, and answered throughout the course of the module.

ELS115 Mastering the Sounds of English 9781099107559 In order to teach the sounds of the English language correctly, it is important for

teachers have a good grasp of their pronunciation themselves. In this module, participants will be familiarised with the sound system of English language, and will learn how to recognize and correctly pronounce individual phonemes, blends and digraphs. They will consider sequences and procedures for teaching the letter sounds, and will examine particular aspects of teaching phonics that often prove difficult for children for whom English is not a first language. Participants will engage in a series of fun and helpful pronunciation exercises that will help them overcome specific difficulties they may have with their own pronunciation, and will also look at how word stress within a sentence can alter meaning.

ELS118 Songs, Rhymes and Chants 9781099107580 Songs, rhymes and chants are an integral part of teaching English language. They

help develop children’s language and communication skills are useful tools when teaching phonemic awareness due to the fact that they are highly memorable and can sustain many repetitions. In this module, participants will learn about the benefits of using songs, rhymes and chants as a way of supporting children’s phonological awareness and developing their vocabulary. They will have the opportunity to engage in some micro-teaching activities, using songs, rhymes and chants to engage learners in the learning process. They will also have the opportunity to create their own song, rhyme or chant for children, a skill which is not as easy as it sounds!

ELS116 The Value & Art Of Story-Telling 9781099107566 For centuries, stories have been used to convey a message, to entertain and to

educate. Stories are used as the springboard for all subsequent learning, including the teaching of phonemes, vocabulary and social-emotional learning. In this module, participants will consider the psychological, educational and creative value of using stories with young learners. They will also practise effective storytelling techniques, such as using voice projection, expression and body language that can help bring stories to life. This is a lively session where teachers will get to practise the art of storytelling and learn how to get the most out of the wonderful collection of authentic reading materials.

ELS117 Using Drama in the Language Classroom 9781099107573 Drama activities are a valuable tool in a teacher’s toolkit. They provide teachers and

students with a welcome break from worksheets, and allow children to discover new ways to express themselves through language. This module will give participants the confidence to move away from a teacher-fronted classroom and work with their students in new and exciting ways that draw on their cognitive, emotional and physical skills for a truly creative and social language learning experience. A highly practical module, participants will gain first-hand experience of many of the drama activities suggested, and will leave the session armed with an array of practical drama ideas and activities that will help them bring their language lessons alive for their students.

ELS102 Foundational Skills of Language Learning: Speaking 9781099105623 Leveraging on what they have learnt earlier in Listening Skills, the teachers will be given

skills and strategies to encourage their students to learn how to speak naturally, courte-ously and confidently in any given context. They have to demonstrate how to make an appropriate delivery according to PACC (Purpose, Audience, Context, Culture).

ELS113 Developing Children’s Early Reading Skills 9781099107535 Children’s ability to read well during the pre-school years is one of the greatest

predictors of future academic success. As such, developing a strong foundation in reading is vital. In this module, participants will begin by considering what early reading skills are and what sorts of activities can be used to help young learners get going with reading. They will consider particular difficulties that English as Foreign Language children might have with reading, and will experience, at first hand, a range of games and activities that can be used for teaching the 100 most commonly used words in English. Participants will also look at the role of phonics in learning to read, and will consider possible reasons for reading difficulties.

ELS103 Foundational Skills of Language Learning: Reading 9781099105630 This module will demonstrate to the educators how to model good reading with

inflection, expressions, gestures and explanations, leading to better and instinctual understanding by their students. They will acquire knowledge and skills necessary such as use of phonemics to develop coding skills, use other visual representations to explain new words and how to help their students progress from beginning reading to close reading. Educators also will be expected to showcase how they can teach sequencing and collaboration to scaffold development of reading ability.

ELS119 Developing Children’s Early Writing Skills 9781099107597 Learning to write is a complex process that requires children to use multiple

physical and mental processes at the same time. In this module, participants will consider the different stages of writing development among 4-7 year olds learners and what to expect at each stage. They will think about ways to create a literacy-rich classroom environment and look at ways in which writing instruction can be differentiated within mixed ability classes. Participants will be given lots of practical ideas on how they can best support the children in their classes with the types of writing activities. The role of the teacher in teaching the writing process will also be examined.

ELS104 Foundational Skills of Language Learning: Writing 9781099105647

This module serves to show how all the language skills come together in a spiral progression and culminate in a written activity. Participants will learn to equip their students with writing skills such as progressing from word to sentence to paragraph to whole text.

Essence of Language Learning

ELS 105 Essence of Language Learning: Lexicon 9781099105654 In this module, participants learn to scaffold and build their students’ vocabulary by

adding new words while reinforcing and refining previous words learnt. Exposure to the outside world and 21st Century skills help making words come alive.

ELS106 Essence of Language Learning: Grammar 9781099105661 This module focuses on the importance of understanding how grammar knowledge

will support the development of language skills, particularly speaking and writing. Participants discuss the merits and pitfalls of different ways of teaching grammar in the classroom.

ELS112 Word Power! 9781099107528 Vocabulary is the glue that holds stories, ideas and language together, and it is

during the early years that vocabulary acquisition is at its peak. In this module, participants will think about why we teach vocabulary and how to build vocabulary with young learners (Age 4 - 6). They will consider the role of stories in vocabulary acquisition, and will have a chance to engage with a range of exciting activities designed to develop a wide vocabulary in young learners. This module will also focus on ways to consolidate and recycle vocabulary. By the end of this module, participants will feel more confident about teaching vocabulary to young learners.

Language Assessment ELS107 Language Assessment: Developing Assessments 9781099105678 This module looks at how teachers can devise assessment (AoL, AfL, AaL) to correctly

gauge their pupils’ progress and attainment levels and motivate them to want to succeed.

ELS108 Language Assessment: Reflection and Feedback 9781099105685 Time is given for the group to reflect, review & clarify as well as to consolidate

knowledge and skills.

ELS120 Differentiating Learning 9781099107603 Perhaps one of the greatest challenges for teachers is that not all students are the same.

In any given class, students will exhibit a range of abilities, needs and learning styles that have to be catered for in order for them to succeed with learning, and with large classes, that can be particularly challenging. In this module, participants think about how instruction can be differentiated to make it relevant and accessible to all students. They will examine the notions of different learning styles and multiple intelligences, and what these actually mean within a classroom situation. They will consider the process of differentiation from a content, process and product perspective, and how differentiation can practically be achieved.
