With the 2020 school year well underway it is now official that our school will have more than 2800 students this year. This number is an excellent reflection of the high regard that our school is held in, with the confidence of our community something that we value very highly at Marsden SHS. This has been the case for the last three years, we are one of Queensland’s largest State High Schools with the best in catchment enrolment numbers in the state. Our new Performing Arts Centre is continuing to take shape, with the internal walls now providing a real glimpse of the future for this new space. This week we will welcome parents and families from our Year 7 cohort in a Meet and Greet afterschool today Thursday 13th February. I would encourage all parents of Year 7 students to come along to make a connection with your child’s teachers, and I’d once again remind parents that all staff emails are accessible via our school website under the Our School Tab, “Our Staff”. Now that we are 3 weeks into the year, oursenior students are well into their learningjourney for 2020.

Our year 12s will begin their first exams forunit 3 next week. For our ATAR students, these first assessment items will counttowards their ATAR calculations at the endof year 12. We wish them the best of luck on

these exams and through all of their learning this year.

Our Year 11’s should have now settled into their chosensubjects. These subjects are studied for the next 2 years of yourchild’s education. Performance across both years contribute totheir QCE attainment by the end of year 12. It is important thatstudents are well prepared and organised particularly aroundmeeting assessment deadlines.

Our year 10s are just beginning their senior journey. This isan important year for pathways. Year 10 subjects providefoundational skills and understanding needed for subjects inYears 11 and 12. Students should be striving to perform at theirbest to set themselves up for success in years to come.

If you are looking for ways to assist your child in their seniorphase of education, helping them prepare a study timetableand an assessment calendar to organise their time is a greatplace to start at this time of year. This will help both you andyour child prepare for the times of the school year that are‘assessment heavy’. By planning ahead and allowing time tocomplete drafts and prepare for upcoming exams will assistyour child in submitting quality tasks by their due dates.

I look forward to an amazing year of learning with our Seniors @Marsden SHS.

In weeks 3 and 4 in MMM classes, students will be continuingon with our well-being focus looking at what makes themhappy. Teachers will also work with students to help buildtheir understanding on how to use their planner effectively andclarifying any points of confusion they have about the contentinside.

Students’ success criteria by the end of this term is to present aproject back to their class on what makes them happy, with anadditional focus on future goal setting and career aspirations. What this project looks like may differ from student to student, but I’m really excited to see how students take ownership ofthis project and see what they come up with.

We will be providing further information at our upcoming Year 7Welcome BBQ Event. All year 7 students and their families areinvited to attend today, Thursday 13th February from 2:45pmto 4:45pm at the X Block Lawn. Meet the year 7 staff & supportteam, join an informal information session facilitated by the Year7 Leadership team, learn more about your student’s classes, and enjoy a free sausage sizzle with us. It will be great to seeyou all there.

Year 8Year 8

Week 3 already, time certainly does fly. With this in mind, withthe term in full swing, I’d like to bring up a few remindersregarding student equipment and uniform.

I’d like to remind all families of year 8 students that each studentneeds to have a binder, this can be the school binder, or abinder sold outside of school. Students require a binder tokeep all of their school paperwork and their school books, andthe zip up Binders from the school are great to keep everythingall in one place. This is part of being organised and is a partof the schools expectations for students. New students toMarsden in 2020 will receive a Marsden Binder, so if you arenew to the school and haven’t received yours, please see me inmy office to be issued with one.

Please be aware that the uniform policy includes correctwearing of jewellery and that if student does come to schoolwearing the wrong jewellery, it will be confiscated until the endof the school day for the student to pick up from the StudentFoyer for their first offence. Consequences will continue afterthis and parents will be contacted to collect from the school. Please review the school’s uniform policy in your studentsplanner and feel free to contact me to clarify anything. Thebiggest issues have been decorative earrings and nosepiercings. No nose piercings are acceptable (not even clear),and earrings must be a plain stud or sleeper in gold or silver (nogems, jewels or pearls within them).

I would also like to reiterate that if students do come to schoolwith the incorrect uniform (as I understand, some things don’talways go to plan), they will need to have a note from parents

to provide to me and will be sent to the 2nd hand uniform shopto collect a replacement for the day.

MMM UpdateMMM Update

In MMM, we have been exploring ‘Value myself and discovermyself’ and classes will be exploring what value is and how thisrelates to themselves and all relationships they establish withintheir lives. I have been visiting classes the last few weeks, andhave been very impressed with the level of engagement and funthat students have been having in their lessons. I look forwardto seeing further sessions in the future, this is a great time forme to get to know the students in the cohort.

M-Line subjects started this week and for Year 8 students, this occurs on a Tuesday afternoon in session 4 and wasthe elective subjects that students recently selected online, through SOBS bookings. If students were unable to make theselection online, they have been placed into classes that wereavailable. If students are unhappy with what is printed on theirtimetable, they must collect an M-Line subject change form, either from my office or the Student Foyer, fill out and return tothe Student Foyer for processing. Once received, students willreceive an email to their EQ webmail accounts stating whetherthe change was successful or unsuccessful. Please ensureyour child checks their emails regularly.

Lastly, I wanted to draw your attention back to our @marsden.ivalues, which we will be focusing on throughout the year:

Year 9Year 9

The first couple of weeks is an exciting time of year. By nowstudents should have a very clear understanding of classroomand school expectations. Teachers are beginning to unfold theirunits of teaching and relating the learnings back to assessment.I am in the process of implementing learning opportunities forstudents who are trying their best to make the most of theiropportunities at Marsden.

For the next two weeks this looks like.

We have 570 year 9 students at Marsden this year and allof us play a role in developing a learning community built onopportunity.

Mr Mitchell

Year 9 Head of Department

Year 10Year 10

Welcome to week 3. It has been fantastic to walk through Year10 classes over the past fortnight to see engaged students, upholding our school values of Pride, Passion andPersistence. I look forward to seeing this continue throughoutthe year as students lay their solid foundation for their seniorschooling journey.

Applications are now open for our student leadership programfor 2020. Details for this program will be finalised in the nextweek or so, please keep an eye out for this information. Ifstudents would like to apply to become an advocate they canpick up an application form from my office in E-Block, this willneed to be returnedt by Week 4.

Another experience that I am looking forward to, is seeingall students engage with in Term 2 is Structured WorkExperience. This will occur in week 5, where all Year 10students will engage into a workplace for 2 days to experienceand learn about that business or industry. One of the benefitsof being part of such a large and awesome community isthe network of families to place students. Therefore, ifif youyouareare ableable toto provideprovide anyany contactscontacts forfor businessesbusinesses whowho wouldwouldplaceplace aa student,student, oror students,students, pleaseplease emailemail AmandaAmanda Augustine,Augustine,CareerCareer EngagementEngagement && TransitionTransition OfficerOfficer (([email protected]@eq.edu.au)) ororcontactcontact thethe schoolschool onon 32993299 0555.0555. Two questions that mightopen the conversation around work experience that you maylike to ask your child when they arrive home this week are;

1.What interests/passion do you have?

2.What kind of pathway would you like to go into after school?

MMM UpdateMMM Update

Students so far this term have been working on exploring theirpassion. Last week, I posed the question to all students‘What’s your winning formula?’ in relation to understandingtheir Character Strengths. There are 24 Character Strengthsand they are personal qualities which make who you are asa person. More information around these Strengths can befound on page 6 of the student planner. It is important that allstudents know their winning formula, because research showsus that students who use their strengths every day are 3 timesmore likely to report having an excellent quality of life, and 6times more likely to be engaged at school. In MMM this week, all students completed the Character strengths quiz. Why notask your child what their top 5 strengths are and how theycan continue to grow these throughout the year? If you wouldlike to share this with your child, encourage them to show youpage 10-11 of their student planner and support your child toimplement at least 1 Strength Booster fortnightly to ensure theycontinue to grow and become their best possible self.

• Arrive on time, with all the right tools

• Am positive and give 100%

• Carry my planner at all times

• Wear the uniform with pride

• Show respect for the people and the grounds

• Engage in active learning

• Dare to inspire. Make a difference!

• Students – showing up on time with the correctuniform, actively engaging in classroom activities.

• Teachers – providing connections between learningskills, writing and reading skills and responding toassessment elements

• YLHOD – Contacting external workplaces to develop“Passion experiences for students” and working with

students who need support with their skills byproviding workshops and development plans.

Year 11Year 11

Year 11s have started their senior schooling very well with highlevels of engagement across all subjects.

Timetables are now locked in for unit 1 for all students withopportunity for small adjustments if required in weeks 6 and 7in Term 2. Students in senior school complete four units whichtransition during the middle of a term so it is important that theyare enrolled for the entire unit for assessment. M-Line has alsonow been finalised and students received new timetables thisweek. If they wish to change they can collect subject changeforms from the office and return as soon as possible. Changeswill be considered but may not be possible due to class sizes. Ifstudents wish to investigate what external courses, traineeshipsor apprenticeships are available to assist with career choicesfrom 2022, please email our Industry Liaison Officer HelenClose on [email protected] or Amanda Augustine, CareerEngagement & Transition Officer ([email protected]) oralternative contact the school on 3299 0555.

MMM UpdateMMM Update

MMM time in 2020 will be used to focus on the overall qualitiesof the students encompassing ‘Body, Mind, Character’ – witha clear focus being on improving academic performance andfuture readiness. Students are aligned with a teacher for MMMthat also teaches one of their six subjects. This mentoring willassist students as we move through the term and start to headtowards first pieces of senior assessment. Information aboutassessment and exams will be released in the next few weeks.

Ms Neumann

Year 11 Head of Department

Year 12Year 12

Year 12s have started 2020 off on a positive note with thecohort showing independence, accountability and overall pridein leading the greater student cohort as the Class of 2020.

Many students are beginning to proactively plan forpost-schooling employment or study opportunities. If your childis one of these students that would like to investigate whatexternal courses are available, now is the best time to preparefor them, please email myself on [email protected] orAmanda Augustine, Career Engagement & Transition Officer([email protected]) or alternative contact the school on 32990555. If your child is also interested in further study in 2020,information about QTAC applications will be distributed veryshortly to both parents and students which outlines what theprocess looks like and will give clear timelines and applicationinstructions.

MMM UpdateMMM Update

Students received their ‘Senior Badge’ during the Senior BadgeCeremony on Monday, they should wear this badge on theirties with pride and distinction. MMM time in 2020 will be used

to focus on the over all qualities of the students encompassing‘Body, Mind, Character’ – with a clear focus being on improvingacademic performance and future readiness. We have anextensive student support services program at Marsden SHSfor our year 12s, led by Phillippa Proctor [email protected] andSonny Sua [email protected]. I am proud to be a cofounder of which iscalled Diversity with Dance. We are invitedby Logan City Council as a representativeand stakeholder who were sponsored byBEMAC Funding in 2019 which directlyinvests in community, diversity and danceenrichment.

The reason why Diversity with Dance worksis because we have a team of fantastic volunteers who arerespectful of people and country, sharing their stories, knowledge, experience and skills.

For me personally, it gives me the personal confidence andmotivation that I didn’t see in myself to help people and mycommunity. I’ve been a volunteer in the community for over5 years and have been dancing most of my life. Co creatingthis program was one of the best decisions of my life, I lovehelping people. In 2020, I was able to start teaching my ownclasses, which include Aqua Zumba at Gould Adams AquaticCentre and Zumba Fitness at Parkinson Aquatic Health Clubs. Iam one of the youngest instructors. I’m currently completing myCertificate III in Fitness outside of school. Without the supportof Education and community, I would not have as manyopportunities. I make it count and work hard because not manypeople get the chances I’ve been blessed to have. Now I wantto help other people like me.

Marsden SHS Assessment PolicyMarsden SHS Assessment Policy

MarsdenMarsden SHSSHS AssessmentAssessment PolicyPolicy –– Student’sStudent’s GuideGuide toto AcademicAcademicSuccessSuccess

We are proud, passionate and persistent in pursuing one goal –that all Marsden students experience success at school.

At Marsden, we provide superior opportunities for our studentsto succeed in the academic, sporting and creative fields. Toenable our students to fully access the academic opportunities, our teachers work tirelessly every day to deliver world-classcurriculum using evidence-based pedagogy in engaging andrigorous learning environments.

There are many ways in which students can achieve academicsuccess. Without a doubt, it is important to learn new contentand skills; however, it is just as important to be able todemonstrate new knowledge and skills through successfulcompletion of assessment tasks.

To assist students to effectively communicate their learning, wehave developed a new Marsden State High School AssessmentPolicy for Students, which can be accessed here and found inStudent Planners. The policy outlines how students can bestprepare, complete and submit assessment.

In the preparation stage, the most important aspect is time– the earlier the students start working on assessment, thebetter. The policy highlights how students can work proactivelyto connect daily learning in the classroom to assessmentdemands.

Extract from the Policy that students should be engaging with atpresent time

Each student’s individual needs shape their approach to thepreparation of the assessment task. Should a student needSpecial Provision in Years 7-10 or Access Arrangements andReasonable Adjustments in Years 11 and 12, the AssessmentPolicy outlines how additional support with assessmentcompletion and submission can be sought.

Student engagement with the Assessment Policy will lead toimproved academic outcomes. Most importantly, studentcommunication with teachers to find out how they areprogressing with assessment and how to improve will make thebiggest difference to their academic success.

The recent heavy rain isn’t just great news for drought-affectedLogan, it’s also good for anyone trying to get rid of fire ants fromtheir backyard.

The wet weather and warm temperatures means fire ants buildtheir nests higher — making them much more visible.

As ants only measure 2–6 mm in size, now is the perfect timefor you to check your backyard for fire ants and report any

sightings to the National Red Imported Fire Ant EradicationProgram.

Those not wanting to wait for the program to treat their propertyfor free also have the option to call a pest manager, or treat thefire ants themselves. For best results, this should occur oncethe ground is dry and preferably 48 hours before forecast rain.
