For some parents this may be the first time you see grades for your child in different learning areas. Those grades are a measure of how well your child has achieved against the Australian Curriculum achievement standards for their year level. Teachers assign these grades after careful consideration of the evidence and their observations. What do grades not tell us? Grades are not an indication of how intelligent a student is. There are thousands of ways to be smart. I see students every day who may struggle to grasp a concept in maths or move to the next reading level but they know so much about a subject area that interests them. I see students who excel in academic subjects but they don’t know what to do or say when they see someone upset. Subject grades do not generally measure social intelligence, self management or leadership qualities. Have a look at the Personal and Social Capabilities section of the report to see how your child is tracking with these developmental skills. Pursuing goals with a sense of purpose is encouraged in our students. So when thinking about the grades of your child (whether high or low) a focus on what they have achieved and the next steps in their learning is more helpful and hopeful than just looking at any perceived deficits. Grades are important but they are not representative of all that our students are and all that they can do. • Performing Arts

R—2 “Sir Scallywag and the Golden Underpants”

All Junior Primary classes attended a performance by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra of “Sir Scallywag” at the Adelaide Town Hall.

We learnt some wonderful songs to perform with the orchestra and were so excited to meet Paul Rissman, the composer of the music for the story, who narrated the show and introduced us to the instruments of the orchestra and the conductor Graeme Murphy.

    HERMAN AND ROSIE

All Year 3/4 classes performed with a jazz ensemble

from the A.S.O. in a story-telling of the wonderful

“Herman and Rosie”. We learnt jazz songs, dance

moves, rap and tricky instrumental parts to play during

    the performance in our school

    hall

    R-7 POLICE BAND PERFORMANCE

“Thank you so very much for the very super dooper

performance. It was so musical”. Annie Yr 3 Mary Lee

Huge shout out and warmest congratulations to our Private

Instrument tutor, John Baker who will be inducted into the

South Australian Music Hall of Fame on Saturday, 7th July.

What a well-deserved achievement for a much loved and

inspirational guitar teacher. Unfortunately tickets have

already sold out for this event! We also wish John a speedy

recovery after a recent bout of ill-health.

    Student Action

As part of our commitment to community service, students recently planned and completed two fundraising projects during their lunchtime breaks. Students who have ideas for community action can seek approval by filling in an individual or small group event plan at the front office. This ensures small fundraising events are well organised, safe and supported. Recent examples include.

    Scouts Fundraising

Kyan, Edward , Ananya, Sruja and Lukaz recently decided to support the Rose Park Scouts who are fundraising for new camping equipment. They decided to do a lunchtime ‘guess the lolly jar’ competition. The competition was won by Ian from R2 and $40 was raised.

    World’s Greatest

    Shave

Ayla from D3 was recently recognised for her outstanding fundraising effort for the Leukemia Foundation.

Ayla held a cake stall and together with her online donations raised $6735, an outstanding effort.

Congratulations to the Marryatville SAPSASA Netball

team who made it through to the second round of the

competition. The girls were brilliant in their defeat of St

Dominic's but unfortunately lost to St Mary's in the

second round. It was an absolute joy to coach these

girls as they worked hard as a team and showed great

commitment to their school. Well done girls!

    First Chess Problem Solution

How many squares are there on a chess board?

    New Chessboard Problem

If a chessboard were to have rice placed upon each square such that one grain were placed on the first square, two on the second, four on the third, and so on (doubling the number of grains on each subsequent square), how many grains of rice would be on the chessboard at the finish?

Put your answer in at the front office. Mr Hammerl

Quoi de neuf? What’s new ? Students have been creating their own impressionist paintings to enter in a competition. To coincide with the exhibition COLOURS OF IMPRESSIONISM, MASTERPIECES FROM THE MUSÉE D'ORSAY, The Smelly Cheese Shop, The Adelaide Central Market and the South Australian French Teachers’ Association (SAFTA) are pleased to announce an art competition for South Australian students of French. The works of the 12 finalists will be exhibited at the Central Market from 6-20 July. The grand winner will be announced at a ceremony on 14 July, as part of festivities for La Fête Nationale, Bastille Day. Prizes will be awarded to all finalists: Une classe Degustation et Appreciation de Fromages Français. The grand winner will receive a trophy and a cheese-making class for themselves and their French class.

Grand concours de poésie récitée - Poetry recital competition 2018 Students are busy learning by heart some French poems for the annual poetry competition run by SAFTA. Students will be filmed reciting the poem for their age group and will be judged by a committee. The winners will be awarded a prize at Saint Peters Boys later in the year. Year 7 Shark Tank and Expo This term as part of their Business and Enterprise Studies all the year seven classes worked in groups of 3 to design and create a product. The challenge was to create a product that would help people improve their daily lives. The assessment was in the form of a ‘Shark Tank’ where they had to present to guest judges who had to be convinced about the product and business model. The judges gave feedback and constructive criticism which helped students improve their ideas. This was followed up by an Expo where each group got to talk about the product to R-6 classes. This experience has helped our year sevens develop communication, creativity as well as their business skills. Special thanks to the judges, Victoria Librandi, Jun Park, Jessica Williams, Lauren B / and Youn P.

    Wedo Lego

    Robots in D4

The Troops in D4 have been exploring coding using the Lego WeDo robots. So far, students have been able to build robots to test the forces of pulling and speed, modifying their robots to improve their design and testing the results. The Troops will be required to build a robot during week 9 and 10 that will be able to transport items from one area to another, similar to a robotic forklift. Students will be connecting their newly developed skills to the real world as they develop an understanding of how robots are used and can be used now and in the future.

Spheros are out and about (with D1 & D2)

Students from a range of classes are enjoying taking the Sphero robots outside. They have been coding their robots to move around the yard. There is always a buzz when the Spheros are in use. All classes from years 3—7 have had their introduction lesson and teachers are now planning future sessions. The JPs are looking forward to their turn in Term 3.

    1, 8x8 square 4, 7x7 squares 9, 6x6 squares 16, 5x5 squares 25, 4x4 squares 36, 3x3 squares 49, 2x2 squares 64, 1x1 squares There are actually 64 + 49 + 36 + 25 + 16 + 9 + 4 + 1 squares on a chessboard!
