Newsletter Issue Term 4 2019
Greetings Parents, Guardians, Caregivers and Students, MIEC has had a successful term 4. Our students have excelled academically
and have participated in a range of interactive and engaging learning activities.
The students at MIEC have also enjoyed several excursions including trips to
Taronga Zoo, Sculpture by the Sea and Sydney Jewish Museum.
Our level three students Jannah Aquino, Christie Chu and Ivy Tao proudly
represented MIEC at the annual IEC Oratory Showcase. Their speeches were
powerful, empathetic and thoughtful. Finally well done to our SRC students for
their consistent effort and enthusiasm at fundraising activities through the term.
Our tuition centre continued to operate offering extra academic support to the
students of MIEC throughout the year and MIEC students finished off the year
with our three day overnight camp at the Nepean Adventure Centre. The
students had a wonderful time participating in a wide range of activities such as
the Gorge swing, canoeing, Adventure Ropes, rock climbing, Maxi zips,
archery and fencing. Unfortunately, we are saying goodbye to some 47 students
this term. MIEC wishes them the best of luck as they continue their academic
journey. We are sure that their futures will be filled with happiness and success.
We are expecting 16 new arrivals day one next term, so hello to a new decade!
To all MIEC students and their families,
Happy holidays,

Farewell Speech
Farewell Speech By Jannah Aquino, 3C (Unedited)
Good afternoon everyone, I am Jannah Aquino from 3c. Congratulations to all my fellow leaving students
from level 3. I am very glad and honoured to be standing here today and represent all of you to speak in the
last assembly. As they always say, “time flies so fast” and it is true since one term has finished again. I
believe that you must also have lots of words to say.
First of all, I would like to say thank you to all the friendly students who made sure no other student would
feel alone. We all had one goal, to have better knowledge in English. We are all from different countries
and we all have a different language, but this didn’t stop us from communicating with each other. I could
still remember my first day here in MIEC. I was so shy and very nervous to speak. I believe everyone had
this same experience on their first day but as the time passed by, I know that we built our confidence to talk
using the English we learned each day. With our classmates, we created a special bond that will stay
precious in our memories. We studied together, laughed together and became comfortable with each other.
That’s what makes it so precious. We don’t see each other as strangers or as just classmates but as a
second family.
Secondly, I would like to sincerely give my thanks to all the staff and teachers who helped us overcome the
challenges that we faced here. With all your support and courageous acts, we received the best education.
You always pushed us to do better. You always made us realise that we could do better, and that our
abilities don’t just stop there. We appreciate your patience, caring, friendly, helpfulness attitudes toward us.
You never forget to ask us and comfort us every time we don’t feel good. You became our second parents.
We appreciate how you always give efforts and try your best to make the class more interesting and fun to
enhance our learning. To the world you may be just a teacher but for us you are all heroes. We could never
pursue our dreams without your help. You opened our minds, touched our hearts and shaped our future.
Without you we wouldn’t achieve our goals and boost our confidence. I want to remind every student never
to forget the teachers when we leave MIEC.
I believe everyone has enjoyed their wonderful time here in MIEC but sadly it has come to an end. I did not
expect that it would be so difficult to say goodbye. Another chapter of our life will begin, and I wish
everyone good luck in high school. As we all know, high school will be extremely difficult for all of us.
That is why we must ensure that we will do our very best. But remember Life is not perfect, we will
sometimes fail and that’s normal. As Mark Zuckerberg says, the greatest success comes from having the
freedom to fail.
Best wishes to all of you and merry Christmas and a happy new year. Thank you!

Sculpture By The Sea
Sculpture by the Sea By Kris, 3C (unedited)
This term we went on an excursion to Sculpture by the Sea at Bondi. During the way to
Bondi Beach, I had a lot of fun with my friends on the bus. We chatted, playing games and
showed each other about the thinking when we arrived there.
Finally, Bondi Beach was in front of my eyes. It was very beautiful with lots of scenery.
The sea was so blue. People were swimming on the beach. There were some women
were doing yoga and the visitors were everywhere.
I got out of the bus and started walking to the destination we had to go. Along the way,
there were a lot of the sculptures were made from a lot of the famous artists in the world.
Although I were very far from the destination, I didn’t feel tired as I were impressed by the
magnificent scenery of the sculptures.
I saw a lot of sculptures with weird shape, some of them were also made from our usual
material like steel, wood, bamboo. I was impressed by two things. The first one was the
Viewfinder, this was a giant ‘periscope’ like the ones used for submarine. The second was
the Angry Boy, this was an angry baby, his face looked very silly and funny and was made
from polyester.
One-and-a-half-hour past, I finally got to the destination, it was on Tamarama Beach. I
had lunch at the park behind that beach for an hour. I chatted with my friends about what I
had seen in the way to Tamarama Beach, we took pictures and shared food with each
other.
After lunch time with my friend, my teacher called us for roll call, and we move to the tent
next to the place we had lunch. In the white tent, we were taught about how to make a
sculpture. We had taught how to make an illusion, it like a tunnel but when I looked at it,
that illusion tunnel made me very confused about the size of thing that I had put into the
tunnel.
I had a lot of fun and I made my ‘Little man’, it was cute, small and this was my first
sculpture I had made in my life. I came out of the tent, took a lot of photos with the artist
and my friends. I had been invited for an orange juice. My friends and I said thank you to
all the people who helped us made our sculpture.
I went to the bus with my friends, we chatted and shared each other about our sculpture. It was a fun day for me, I had remembered this excursion until now. I hope I will continuously partake to a lot of excursion like the sculpture by the sea.

It was a perfect day on the wonderful Bondi beach. My friends and I had been
visiting artworks that stretch along the coast with our art teachers. Nothing was better
than hearing the waves hitting the shore and admiring artworks from around the
world. Each statue has its own meaning inside, and some statues were so funny like
the Pink Tank in the park or the binoculars overlooking the ocean. The exhibition
area has been divided into three zones. That was the Bondi Beach, the big park and
the small beach. While visiting ,we had a break for breakfast to energise the body or
looking around.
Later, we moved to our destination, took some group photos with the big
balloon bunny and enjoyed lunch with each other near the beach. I really wanted to
swim but my teacher said we had not to touch to the water. My lunch was not very
healthy because I brought all the snacks, popcorn and chocolates biscuits. Luckily, I
had some fresh cucumbers and carrots from my teacher.
When lunch was over, we were welcomed to a special art class by the Greek
artist; Dani. I was excited to learn to do one of the artworks on display at this year's
exhibition. It was always hard at first time, but we all had our own work at the end.
Every single art work was fabulous because it was all the ideas and efforts of us.
Finally, when it was almost over, we were given bottles of organic juice from the
artist to regain the energy that had been lost for a long day.
We thanked the artist and walked back to the bus stop. It was an amazing
excursion!

Taronga Zoo
This term, MIEC students have been
learning about animals and their
habitats in their Science class. Our
students were able to apply their
knowledge of animals by visiting The
Taronga Zoo and meeting some of
our native Australian animals in the
education centre. Students were
given time to explore the zoo and
read about the various animals that
were in the zoo. The highlight of the
day were seeing the seal show and
bird show. This was a fantastic
excursion for our students to meet
and greet some of the animals they
have been studying in the Science
class.

MY EXCURSION TO SYDNEY JEWISH MUSEUM Daisy, 3C
On Wednesday, we went on an excursion to The Sydney Jewish Museum with my classmates and HSIE
teachers. It was a very meaningful experience.
Before the excursion, I had learnt about the Holocaust for the whole term so that everything was not
very strange. The museum amazed me a lot. It was completely different from the other museums in my
country.
While we were waiting for the survivor; Lucy, who was going to tell us her story. We were shown a
short video of the background where the Holocaust occurred with a vocabulary sheet. The staff was very
caring when she kept asking us if we understood this word or not and gave us the vocabulary with the
proper meaning.
Lucy was a kind woman with a friendly face. She made me feel comfortable at the first sight. She told
us about her story. Her story was a brand new experience for me. Meeting a real survivor was better than
just watching videos about the Holocaust. Thanks to Lucy, I could know more about the true story about
the Holocaust. What happened to their family? Where did they live? How could they survive? All of my
questions were answered. We all knew that her past was the most terrifying time in her entire life but
Lucy still bravely told us every detail of it.
At the end of the meeting, one of the MIEC students asked her if the world was a better place or not.
Her answer impressed me a lot.
“Unfortunately, it’s not. This is the reason why you guys are going to make it better. The future is in
your hands,” she answered.
Lucy kept repeating “the future is in your hands” what showed me how much she was looking
forward to the young generation. “Learn about history to never do it again” was always one of our points
in every argument at school. At that moment, I strongly felt the importance of it. Our past was full of
crime, hate and death. We could never let it happen again.
Besides Lucy, there were some other survivors who guided us around the museum and told us more
stories about the Holocaust. My guide’s husband even had a picture attached on some documents which
was displaying inside the cabinet.
We could not feel or heal the Jews’ pain thoroughly. However, those courageous survivors still came
forward and showed us their scars. We greatly appreciated that. Going to the museum and meeting the
survivors were one of the most unforgettable memories in my life. I was luckier than many of my friends
who could not go there and witness the real stories. Thanks to all of my teachers for organising such an
amazing and meaningful excursion.

Public Speaking
The Ninth Oratory Showcase By Kai Yan, 3B (Unedited)
It was a Thursday and the weather was cool and cloudy. The students in 3B including me, everyone
seemed jubilant and excited to attend the public speaking excursion which was the ninth IEC oratory
showcase. After about twenty minutes of driving, we finally arrived at the Bankstown College and
started an exciting speaking day.
When I got into the hall, I suddenly realised that there were a lot of international students from
different countries. I felt surprised and happy about that. In a few minutes, the host began to
introduce the showcase and he started the speech. Our school was sitting at the left-side back of the
hall, we all enjoyed there and we
could hear the speeches clearly. After
listening to a few speeches, I found
that every student and every IEC had
their own style to speak and the in-
formation of every speech was very
interesting. Although the weather
was hot and the heat surrounded us,
we all showed our polite behavior
and respected each other.
During lunch time, I had a chicken wrap with my classmates. Actually, I liked the chicken wrap a
lot and we all enjoyed the time. After finishing eating, we came back to the hall and watched the vid-
eo of Romeo and Juliet from the Bankstown College.
In the afternoon, it was our school, MIEC’s turn. Ivy, Christie and Jannah represented our school
and the classes to give speeches in public. The first one was Ivy, I was so impressed by her topic
“Epitaphs”, because one of the epitaphs at the end of the speech “No idea!” was written by me. I was
glad to hear that. Following Ivy were Christie and Jannah. They spoke fluently and clearly. Also they
had a very good teamwork. I liked their conversation. Everyone on the seats from MIEC was focus on
their speeches and listened to them carefully.
After the exciting speeches, I was really proud of Ivy, Christie and Jannah, also I was proud that I
was a member of 3B, MIEC. I loved the experience of speaking and listening, this activity made me
have a new target for studying which was speaking English fluently. Be proud for 3B! Be proud for all!

MIEC 2019 CAMP
MIEC 2019 Camp “The best camp I’ve ever been on!”. At the end of last term, we went on a 3 day school camp.
All MIEC students arrived at school at normal school time. We were all excited about the camp. Some students bought extra large suitcases. They must of packed for a month! Once we got in-to camp, we found our rooms and began our first activity. My group started with high ropes. It was so scary but fun. You had to wear a special rope that tied you to a safety rope so you did-
n’t fall and a special hat. Once you put it on, you had to climb up a tall pole. You could see very far from the top! It was amazing. By lunch time my friends and I were so hungry.
The second day was the best. We got to go canoeing down a river and we played fencing. By dinner time I was exhausted. That night, we played another game. This time we played archery
and we got to verse the teachers. That was fun! That night we were so tired that I fell asleep straight away.
The last day of camp went by very fast. We had to wake up very early to pack our bags in the mornings before having breakfast. After breakfast, we washed our plates and forks and
packed it in our bags. We carried it to the bus. For my last activity, it was the giant swing. That was terrifying! We sat on a chair and the teacher pulled us high into the air. Everyone counted
down from 3 and I had to pull the rope to release the swing. It was so scary but so fun! I went on it 4 times.
Sadly we had to say goodbye after lunch and we went onto the bus to go back to school. It was the best camp I’ve ever been on and I’m glad I got to spend it with my friends. I will definitely
miss all my MIEC friends and teachers.
