“Now that is a ballet.”– San Francisco Chronicle

2016 REPERTORY SEASON

Based on Pushkin’s classic novel of unrequited love, Cranko’s Onegin is both thrillingly theatrical and astonishingly human. Gorgeous choreography and masterful storytelling bring us all the color and drama of Imperial Russia in a story that feels remarkably fresh even today.

DEAR MUSIC LOVERS

Spring is here at the SFJAZZ Center!

We conceived the Center as a

community-gathering place for artists

and audiences to come together—in

an intimate and open environment—to

experience music’s power to inspire.

The coming months holds the promise

of yet more discoveries.

We begin he last weeks of the SFJAZZ Center's 4th Season—along with the arrival of

Spring—with the clarion call of brass bands, jazz's visceral entreaty to get up and move.

Three of the genre's raucous best make up Brass Fest, our weeklong look at the brass

band tradition's evolution—from New Orleans (Big Sam's Funky Nation, 3/17) to Mumbai

(Red Baraat, 3/18) to Chicago (Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, 3/19).

Our SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director (RAD) program, unique to SFJAZZ, provides a

platform for our Resident Artists to explore new and meaningful projects. Zakir Hussain (3/31–4/3) brings his ever-evolving Masters of Percussion—the top percussionists from

India and the world to the Center for the first time. Always expect surprises from Maestro

Hussain. Thank you to our current RADs Esperanza Spalding, Eric Harland, Terence

Blanchard and Zakir for two Seasons of artistic brilliance. We will be announcing four new

Resident Artistic Directors for our 5th and 6th Seasons in June.

Two weeks of great voices in our Sing, Sing, Sing series include Brazilian vocalist

Joyce in duet with pianist Kenny Werner (4/10), Portuguese fadista Carminho (4/16), and Argentine jazz singer Sofia Rei (4/8) in addition to homegrown artists Dee Dee Bridgewater (4/15) and Lizz Wright (4/17). Pianist Kenny Barron (4/20–24) performs in

various settings with guests including Dave Holland, Stefon Harris, Regina Carter, Romero

Lubambo, and SFJAZZ High School All-Star alumnus Elena Pinderhughes. Meanwhile,

a four night festival in tribute to the great Joe Henderson takes place, appropriately,

in the Joe Henderson Lab with saxophonist Mel Martin (4/21) taking on Henderson’s

classic Mode For Joe and pianist Renee Rosnes (4/22–24) honoring her mentor with

a great quartet.

Outside the Center, Brazilian music icons Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso (4/12) perform

together at the Paramount, and piano giant Keith Jarrett (5/2) plays solo at Davies

Symphony Hall.

Closing out the season, we welcome South African jazz legend Abdullah Ibrahim (4/28-5/1), singer Cassandra Wilson (5/19-22) celebrates Billie Holiday’s centennial, and

New Orleans jazz kings Preservation Hall Jazz Band (5/26–29) wrap things up.

I want to give particular thanks to SFJAZZ Members, whose ranks quadrupled since

groundbreaking in January 2013—from 3,000 to 12,000. The annual support of Members

insures our mission of offering the highest level of music and education programs—and

the continued growth of jazz.

See you at the Center!

The SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director program was

established to give today’s most innovative and influential

musicians the chance to curate exclusive programming

at the SFJAZZ Center and participate in educational

outreach within the community. Every two years, SFJAZZ selects

four of the most forward-thinking musicians in jazz to participate

in the program. Notable world premieres have included pianist

Jason Moran’s pairing of jazz and live skateboarding, guitarist

Bill Frisell’s adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s The Kentucky

Derby is Decadent and Depraved featuring actor Tim Robbins,

and drummer Eric Harland’s Voyager band with live video gamers.

The Resident Artistic Director program features unprecedented

collaborations between world-renowned artists, and continues

the boundary-breaking creative mission of the SFJAZZ Center.

Past Resident Artistic Directors have included Bill Frisell, John

Santos, Miguel Zenón and Regina Carter. The 2015-16 SFJAZZ

Resident Artistic Directors are Esperanza Spalding, Eric Harland, Terence Blanchard and Zakir Hussain. Zakir's residency runs

from March 31 to April 3. The week features his celebrated

Masters of Percussion ensemble. ■

DEAR FREIND OF SFJAZZYou are likely sitting in the Robert

N. Miner Auditorium, the heart of the

SFJAZZ Center. SFJAZZ is a non-profit

organization that exists to further our

great American art form—jazz. Your ticket

purchases, memberships and donations

make it possible. We appreciate support

of all kinds but want to remind you that

government support—while critical and

appreciated—makes up less than 2% of

the resources it takes to present the music

in its many forms and provide educational

services to our schools in need.

Every show counts, and as we wrap up the final weeks of our 2015/16 Season we are

proud that attendance is increasing and that you are part of the resurgence in jazz in

San Francisco and far beyond!

This season we have presented more shows than ever before. September through

February, SFJAZZ presented more than 100 shows on the stage of Miner Auditorium and

many more in the Joe Henderson Lab and venues throughout the Bay Area (What was

your favorite? Let me know at [email protected]). We continue to offer you a varied

season that has included performances by Brian Wilson & Al Jardine, Cameron Carpenter

with his International Touring Organ and our most ambitious presentation yet, Terence

Blanchard’s Champion: An Opera in Jazz that garnered a multitude of positive reviews both

locally and globally.

Meanwhile, the SFJAZZ commitment to the greater community has never been more

robust with programs in schools and community centers in San Francisco, Oakland and

Marin. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to produce music with the latest

recording tools, we have a series of classes for you in our Digital Lab. You can check

SFJAZZ.org to learn more.

If you have been meaning to bring your family and friends to one of our special Family

Matinees but haven’t been able to make it in person, you can now watch them online in real

time at SFJAZZ.org/live, just as if you were here in person. April 16 with Terrence Brewer

and May 21 with Daniel Handler and Marcus Shelby are the dates to remember.

Have you experienced On The Corner? On The Corner is the blog the SFJAZZ team

has created to provide you with the stories behind the scenes as well as some of those

that you might have missed in the world of jazz music. And you can find it on, you

guessed it, SFJAZZ.org.

Be a part of it!

Abdullah Ibrahim is fond of saying that his songs tell the story of his life—which would make his life a song.

One story told by this venerable pianist and composer is about his most famous song, “Mannenberg,” named after a black township created under apartheid in Cape Town, South Africa, Ibrahim’s hometown. Historically, the city is a crossroads, a musical melting pot, an African New Orleans. And in June 1974, Ibrahim and his band were recording there amid the government’s forced removals of black and “coloured” families of mixed ethnicity. “It was basically a war zone outside,” he says, recalling how he sat down at an upright piano in a corner of the studio and began to compose “Mannenberg,” which would become the unofficial anthem of the anti-apartheid movement—and which sounds absolutely nothing like music from a war zone. It is pure joy, a celebration: proud music, hold-your-head-high music.

Now 81, he laughs at the seeming contradiction and explains one of his guiding principles. It holds “that softness overcomes the hardness. If you look at water, for example, it is nourishing but it can also be forceful, it can erode what is in front of it. So even in that horrendous

system that we lived under in South Africa, we learned from our parents and our grandparents and our teachers that softness will overcome.”

Nelson Mandela called Ibrahim—who performed at Mandela’s 1994 presidential inauguration—“our Mozart.” Decades earlier, Duke Ellington claimed him as a protégé and arranged his first recording contract, hearing Ibrahim’s connection to the root. One hears the drum in Ibrahim’s piano playing, just as one does in Ellington’s and just as one does in that most percussive of pianists, Thelonious Monk, a key influence on Ibrahim. He and Monk share a spirit, an essence. Alone at the piano, each seems utterly absorbed with the

spaces that open up and just hang there, as if time could go on forever within the confines of a three-minute song.

There is a voice-like quality to Ibrahim’s compositions, which are deceptively simple masterpieces of craftsmanship. For instance, “Mannenberg” rides on a riff, a seven-note melody that repeats and repeats, adhering to a relaxed if jaunty rhythm. The melody is the rhythm; the rhythm is the melody. And there’s not a wasted note. Ibrahim is a “less is more” composer, though his compositions somehow feel large, timeless, ancient and new, opening onto vistas: African jazz panoramas from a man who grew up in the constricted spaces of apartheid.

Born in 1934 and baptized Adolph Johannes Brand, he springs—like “Water from an Ancient Well” (the title of one of his most beautiful tunes)— from a musical family. His mother and grandmother were pianists in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and some of his best compositions carry echoes of

church hymns. And that’s not all they carry. Because going back to his teen years as a club performer in the Cape Town crossroads, he absorbed so much else: traditional music from much of Africa, along with waltzes and quick-steps, raga and samba, Chinese and Malay music, and the marabi township music that still infiltrates his sound, infectiously melodic and danceable. And of course there was swing and bebop: the black American GIs from whom he bought the latest records nicknamed him “Dollar” Brand, which was how he was known until his conversion to Islam.

Exiled from South Africa in 1962, he met Ellington in Zurich a year later. Moving to New York, he was part of the free jazz scene at its most heavy-duty moment, hanging out with John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor, playing and recording with his soul mate Don Cherry. In 1972, I saw Ibrahim perform with trumpeter Cherry at Coleman’s loft, in a quartet with bassist

Leading us on the journey of Waller’s extraordinary contributions to jazz and popular music are two of our Bay Area treasures: author and comedic genius Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket), and award–winning bassist and bandleader Marcus Shelby.

“ WE PRACTICE 50 YEARS TRYING TO FIND A TECHNIQUE, BUT IN THE END, IT IS A PROCESS OF TRYING TO FIND THE SILENCE.”

Jimmy Garrison and drummer Ed Blackwell. Wow. The music proceeded seamlessly, song to song, like a suite: graceful, melodic, a rising prayer, a holy commotion, then moving toward the universal silence that seems to underlie Ibrahim’s music.

“We practice 50 years, trying to find a technique,” Ibrahim says. “But in the end, it is a process of trying to find the silence… Monk, Coltrane and Bird, they all had this. Well, you practice and practice and practice and then you forget

about it.” A student of Japanese martial arts for half a century, he likens this endpoint to the Zen notion of “no mind. It’s this point of profound silence that you are trying to reach. Or it’s the sound of that silence.”

During the 1980s in Manhattan at the club Sweet Basil, Ibrahim often would perform for a week, sometimes for two, with the 7-piece band he calls Ekaya, which means “home.” Almost always, the musicians would go to the well: “Mandela,” “The Wedding,” “Mama,” “African Marketplace” —so many songs, so many stories told. And at the end of a late night set, as the last notes vanished into who-knows-where, the audience would just sit there, stunned to silence by the power of what had just happened.

The cabs were flying by outside on Seventh Avenue South, but all of us had found a sanctuary in the music. We were home. ■
