Welcome everyone to the 2019-2020 swimming season of the Marshall Road Marlins Swim Club. As we move into our 53rd season, I’d like to reflect on the great opportunities swimming club provides for our kids – the confidence they develop, the friendships forged and the memories created. I’d also like to express my appreciation to everyone who has volunteered for committee positions this season. The club is almost 100% volunteer-based (apart from the running of learn to swim and squad) and couldn’t exist without your help. In addition to those positions, there will be plenty to do pool-side as the season progresses so we would love to hear from any parents and friends who are keen to help out. This handbook provides club members with information about the processes of the club and the rules by which we are governed. Any suggestions for improvement are welcome and can be sent to the Executive Committee at [email protected] for consideration. We look forward to a great year of swimming from all of our Marlins members and wish everyone a safe and successful season!

NOMINATING AND QUALIFYING FOR EVENTS Ahead of every club night, full club members are invited to nominate for the events they would like to participate in. Nominations are managed online. A link to the nomination form will be emailed to club members and posted on the Marshall Road Marlins closed Facebook group. Events for club night are arranged in the order of members’ personal best swimming times (not by age or gender). Competitors are considered “novices” in the 25m events and “swimmers” in the 50m events Club members graduate from “novice” to “swimmer” once they swim faster than the following times: Stroke Time Freestyle 24 seconds Breaststroke 29 seconds Backstroke 26 seconds Butterfly 25 seconds All members nominating for a new stroke must undertake a 25m time trial in that stroke. Once a member has graduated to “swimmer” they cannot return to “novice”. Weekly “special” events • 25m novices can nominate to swim 50m specials. • 50m swimmers can nominate to swim 100m and 200m FS specials. All novices and swimmers can nominate for the 100m individual medley specials. Competitors must record a time of 1.35.00 or less to graduate from a 100m to a 200m medley swimmer.

POINTS AGGREGATE All full club members are awarded points throughout the season for the club night events they participate in. The points are used to determine end of season awards for the club. Points awarded for each event are set out below:

Time Points 2.5 sec or more slower than best time 1 Between 1.6 & 2.4 sec slower that best time 2 Between 0.6 & 1.5 sec slower than best time 3 0.6 sec either side of best time 4 Between 0.6 & 1.5 sec faster than best time 5 Between 1.6 & 2.5 sec faster than best time 6 Better than 2.5 sec faster than best time 7

If a swimmer is absent from club night due to their required attendance at an official school swim meet at either district, regional, state or national level they will be awarded four points for every stroke in which they are registered with the exception of a championship event. If a swimmer will be absent from a championship night due to their required attendance at an official swim meet (district, regional, state or nationals), the committee may alter timing of the event or make other suitable arrangements upon prior written request by the member concerned. No points are awarded for distance championships. Points for distance and aggregate trophies will cease on the last club night before the commencement of the distance championships. Where a club night is cancelled due the health and safety reasons, no points will be awarded for any stroke that has not been completed on the night.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVEN’T NOMINATED Where nominations have not been submitted by the cut-off, the marshals will try to fit the swimmer into an event if a spare lane is available. In these circumstances, no time will be recorded for the swimmer. This may affect the swimmer’s points aggregate and their eligibility to qualify for Distance Championships. WHAT TO DO IF YOU CANNOT SWIM If there are any changes after nominations are completed (e.g. sick swimmer), please send an email to [email protected] or post a message to the Marshall Road Marlins Facebook group by 5pm on Tuesday with the name and age of your swimmer. If you are at the pool and need to leave early, please see one of the marshals to remove a swimmer from an upcoming event. MARSHALLING & STARTING SWIMS Parents and swimmers should listen to announcements made over the pool loudspeaker to ensure that swimmers report to the marshalling area for their events. Swimmers need to be ready for action when they report to the marshals. Events can’t be delayed for missing or unprepared swimmers When the whistle blows, there should be absolute silence for the start of the race until swimmers are in the water. At all swimming events conducted by the club, the Referee’s decision will be final and binding.

START RULE If a swimmer accidently breaks on the start, a rope will be lowered into the water to stop the race. Swimmers will restart the race immediately. Any swimmer, who, in the opinion of the Referee, intentionally breaks on the start will be disqualified. If a swimmer intentionally breaks, the race will continue and the swimmer will be advised of the disqualification at the completion of the race. In 50m and longer events swimmers are to stay in the water, close to the wall at the end of their race, so the next race can commence immediately. This does not apply to backstroke events.

This season the club will compete in three interclub carnivals. Our aim at these events is to achieve a good result, but we also endeavour to give all members the opportunity to swim at most carnivals. All swimmers who nominate to participate in carnivals will be expected to be available to swim in any stroke and distance that they have previously swum on a Club night. Children may be asked to swim up in a higher age group to fill gaps –this is voluntary. Please notify the Carnival Co-ordinator if you can’t attend carnivals. More details will be provided to members via email and Facebook closer to the carnivals. Distance Championships are held over the last five to six club nights in lieu of the “special”. To be eligible to participate, swimmers must have one official time in a “special” event for the strokes they are nominating. Number of swims required to qualify for distance championships SPECIAL FLY/1 BK/1 BST/1 FS/1 IM/1 EVENTS “Age” is taken as age on the block on first night of Distance Championships. Distance Championship events are in three divisions: Juniors (9 yrs and under) swim 50m in all distance events, other than the individual medley, which will be a 100m race. Intermediate swimmers (10-12 yrs) swim 100m in all distance events. Seniors (13 yrs and over) swim 100m in all distance events, other than the individual medley, which will be a 200m race.

Swimmers 10 yrs and over compete in 50m events irrespective of their qualifications status. Events may need to be swum in heats, in which case places will be determined by times recorded. Medallions will be awarded for first, second and third place only. TROPHY AWARDS We will have an awards presentation at our Age Championship day at the end of the season. Age championship day Club safety guidelines SUPERVISION All children must be accompanied by an adult who will be responsible for the child’s conduct at the pool. The responsibility for supervision of children remains with the parent or guardian at all times. CODE OF BEHAVIOUR FOR PARENTS & GUARDIANS The club supports all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sport. Remember children swim for their enjoyment, not yours. Encourage them to participate - please do not force them. Focus on the child’s efforts and performance, not winning or losing. Respect officials’ decisions and encourage your children to follow your example. Show your appreciation of volunteer officials and administrators. Without their efforts, your children could not participate in club activities. LIGHTNING RULE The club adheres to the following policy in accordance with the Swimming Queensland Lightning Protection Action Guidelines. The pool environment is extremely vulnerable to lightning strikes. Non-severe thunderstorms are just as serious a lightning threat as severe thunderstorms. The MRSS pool has an obstructed view of the sky and MUST be evacuated whenever thunder is heard, regardless of whether a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued. WATER TEMPERATURE The club follows the school’s guidelines in terms of the temperature of pool. Club events will not run if the pool’s water temperature falls below 24 degrees Celsius.

HEALTH AND SAFETY Parents must ensure their child is fit to participate in club activities. In accordance with school regulations: - Swimmers must be suitably attired (including a swimming cap) and have showered prior to entering the pool. - A child who has a discharge from the eyes, ears or nose, purulent sores anywhere, or is wearing an adhesive plaster will not be permitted to swim. - Children must not wear hairpins, watches, rings, bangles or any jewellery in the pool in accordance with School regulations. Club night swims can only be cancelled at the pool at 6:00pm or later by the decision of the committee if it is considered that weather conditions or other health and safety issues may endanger the safety or well-being of swimmers. Club members are required to follow all reasonable instructions given by a committee member or club official at all times. Anyone failing to do so will be advised to leave the pool area and excluded from taking part in swimming activities on that day. A report will be presented to the committee for consideration of further action.

Club safety guidelines (continued) CLUB AIM AND PURPOSE The Marshall Road Marlins Swim Club aims to raise the level of swimming ability within the school and local and community. MEMBER ISSUES Complaints and issues should be submitted in writing to the MRSS Marlins Swim Club Secretary. Submission can be made via email to [email protected] or given to a committee member on club night. Submissions will be raised at the next committee meeting. If an urgent matter is raised a special meeting will be called by the club Chairperson. As the swim club is a sub-committee of the Marshall Road State School P&C Association, some matters may need to be referred directly to the P&C President. Please remember this is the appropriate protocol and forum for issues to be raised and solved. Concerns cannot be raised and solved on the pool deck. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING This meeting is held as part of our final meet - Age Championship Day. It is an important meeting where all of us as members, parents and guardians of our great club have a chance to put forward ideas for running the next season. We also dissolve all the volunteer positions and elect new volunteers—so if you have been watching the volunteers throughout the season and want to get in on the action (and fun) you will want to attend this meeting. We need approximately 20 volunteers each club night. All financial members of the club are required to attend this meeting which runs for approximately 30 minutes.

We encourage all full club members to swim their best and try to break the pool and club records printed here. For a record to be established or broken, the swimmer must swim the entire length of the pool unassisted and with the correct stroke. For a record to be established or broken, the swimmer must be timed by two independent timekeepers and a referee. The selection of timekeepers for all swim meets will be at the discretion of the chief timekeeper. The referee will confirm if a record was broken and the required stroke achieved. The referee’s decision is final.
