Welcome to the 41st Annual Kilrich Yukon Native Hockey Tournament! Looking back on how far this tournament has come – from just a handful of teams competing in the first year - to space for 43 teams and over 900 players to compete across 6 divisions today, there is a lot to be proud of! Months of planning and preparation have brought us together once again to enjoy three full days of action-packed indigenous hockey competition at its finest! On behalf of our Board of Directors, it’s my pleasure to welcome you to the 41st Annual Kilrich Building Centres Yukon Native Hockey Tournament in Whitehorse on the Traditional lands of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council. It’s my great pleasure to announce and to welcome Victoria Gold Corporation as our new Presenting Sponsor. Victoria Gold share a vision of supporting the longevity of what is truly a Yukon-wide community event. Without the year-to-year support of our community partners, such as our name sponsor, Kilrich Building Centres, and for new sponsors like Victoria Gold, this tournament would not be possible. We gratefully acknowledge the time and contributions of Board members and Past Presidents of the Yukon Indian Hockey Association. Their tireless dedication and commitment have helped to make this event the success that it is today. Our Board of Directors is also pleased to share that we have been busy working behind the scenes to modernize the way that our Association works. The most visible of those changes is an official name change to Yukon Indigenous Hockey Association. We also want to ensure that all our fans know about the Live Score capability of our mobile website www.yiha.ca .The Live Score capability allows tournament fans to keep tabs on games going on at the other arenas and to watch the final scores and brackets. Stick with us on our Facebook and Twitter accounts too for all the real-time game updates, videos and photos! Thank you so much for all your support – now let’s have a great tournament! Michelle Dawson-Beattie, President on behalf of

At the tournament opening ceremony on March 26th, 2013, a new annual award called the "Jean Gleason Memorial Hockey Mom" Award was announced. The trophy was commissioned by Yukon Indian Development Corporation and carved by artist Ken Anderson. The YIDC wanted to honor mothers by creating an annual award celebrating all of the contributions and sacrifices hockey moms have made. First Nations people have
always honored our women and the mothers who carry on our culture and show nothing but love and support for everything they do. They felt it only appropriate that they honor them with this award. Even though the trophy will honor one person annually, this award recognizes the contributions every mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, daughter and wife - past, present and future has made
for hockey players.
Jean Gleason Memorial “Hockey Mom" Award Sponsored by Assembly of First Nations - Yukon Region
Growing up in a small community, I had always noticed throughout the years the dedication and time a woman in my home town has always committed to her children while they were growing up; all 4 of her kids played hockey, either ice hockey or floor hockey. She was always there cheering her kids on, sometimes I would stop watching the actual game and start watching her; the enthusiasm and
excitement that radiated from her and I couldn't help but watch her and smile. She would drive
her kids to Whitehorse to practices and games. Not only has she done this for her own children but for also the kids in the community and kids she cares for. At -36 when my car froze solid she had driven the 2 hours to Whitehorse to ensure that the 4 kids she is taking care of made it to Can Skate to learn to skate to play hockey. I had asked her sister in law to Donna to assist me in why Elizabeth Skookum nee Hawkins is deserving of the “Hockey Mom Award”. All I know is what I've seen as someone who is from the same community, a family member can give more information and insight on the commitment Liz has done for her kids Glen, Kerri, Michael and Brett while they all played hockey, and they still play hockey. The commitment and support she has made to her kids while they played is amazing. Liz volunteers at community events in Carmacks and during NHT to assist in setting up.” (submitted by Chantelle Blackjack)

2017 Recipient2017 Recipient2017 Recipient Louise Blanchard ~ Dawson City, YukonLouise Blanchard ~ Dawson City, YukonLouise Blanchard ~ Dawson City, Yukon
We would like to thank Louise, for her hard work and dedication to Minor Hockey. Louise Blanchard, of Dawson City has been a very active volunteer for minor hockey. She has been volunteering her time for aboriginal minor hockey for over 10 years (and Dawson Minor hockey for even longer). Louise is our primary organizer with occasional/sporadic help from parents. Louise has been the reason minor hockey in
Dawson has been as successful as it is. She organizes everything from scheduling, finding coaches, filling in for
coaches, gear rental at minimal costs, special events, clinics, tournaments as well as being Secretary/Treasurer for the organizations. The fundraising that Louise has organized has kept our hockey fees to a minimum as she encourages ALL children to try hockey and wants to keep it affordable for everyone. Louise makes sure that the children’s coaches are fair and encouraging to all of the players. Louise takes pride in making sure all players are treated equally, enjoy the sport of hockey and the comradery of being part of a fun team. She encourages positive sportsmanship for all players, coaches & parents. Louise has been known to pick up players that would otherwise not get to play in the Native Tournament and likes to include other community players that may not have a team submitted. She chooses additional players for the Wolfpack team that are not the strongest players but the players that would most benefit from playing on a fair, fun & encouraging team.
Anyone who knows Louise knows that she is an integral part of hockey in Dawson and the
Yukon. We are forever grateful for all of her volunteer hard work. Louise Blanchard is the Heart
of Minor Hockey in Dawson City. (Submitted by Darlene Kormendy)
