Message to Parents/Carers

School Uniform

We pride ourselves on our expectations for students and this includes their appearance. Therefore, as

an academy we are reinforcing our expectations of skirt length. It is vital for the safety and well-being

of our female students, that skirt lengths are appropriate and are worn to length of just on or above the

knee, stated on p9 of the student planner; “Our uniform is strict, smart and business like.”

To ensure that our students are responsible for their skirt length we are now as an academy running a

“3 chance” ruling. If a HG tutor has to ask a student to roll down their skirt, as it does not meet our ex-

pectation of smart and business like, being just on or above the knee, on 3 occasions then parents/

carers will be contacted by the pastoral team and the student will be required to attend the academy in

trousers only for the remainder of the term.

We are sure that you will support us in this, and in not only reinforcing our expectations, but in also

safeguarding the well-being of our female students.

We appreciate your support in this.

Applications for New Governors for Mark Hall Academy

Mark Hall Academy is seeking community governors for 2019-20. An exciting opportunity has arisen for committed local individuals to become governors at Mark Hall Academy, a long-established and well-respected secondary school at the heart of Harlow in Essex. Mark Hall Academy opened in September 2013. It is proud to be part of the Academy Transformation Trust (ATT) and is supported both centrally and regionally by ATT staff. We are an 11-16 school and our pupil numbers are rising, with 93 stu-dents in year 11 and 187 in year 7, and a total of 702 students currently. We are able to take up to 210 new pupils each year and we expect to be oversubscribed in year 7 in 2019. We are undergoing an extensive new build opening in October 2019. The new school building, along with the Mark Hall Sports Centre, will provide us with state of the art facilities. Our catchment and socio-economic profile is as follows:

11.2% of pupils have English as an Additional Language 10.9% of pupils have a Special Educational Need 0.8% of pupils have an Education Health and Care Plan 29.5% of pupils receive funding for Free School Meals

We have pupils from 16 out of 17 possible ethnic groups, and total pupil number have risen from 574 in 2017 to 720 now. Strong local governance is absolutely critical to our future, and so you will be joining us at a most important time. Your role will be to challenge and support in equal measure, and to bring your own professional or community expertise to bear in enriching the experience of and opportunities for our pupils. You can find more details about the role in the following document, but we strongly urge you to apply as we know you will find this a fulfilling role. The role of governor is unpaid, although reasonable travel expenses will of course be covered. You will need to attend six meetings a year (usually 6pm at the Academy) and it would also help if you are able to spend additional time in the school supporting myself and our dedicated staff to do a great job. We look forward to receiving your application. The application forms are on our website. Manjit Hazle and Victoria Butler Co-Principals (Acting) About Mark Hall Academy Our motto is ‘Aspire, Endeavour, Achieve’. We expect all our students and staff to have high aspirations for themselves and for each other. As an academy we will equip all our students with the skills, attributes and qualifications to progress to college, university, employment and happy, successful lives. Education has the power to open doors and transform lives and that is what we aim to do here. The Academy is part of the Academy Transformation Trust (ATT) who are a leading multi academy trust committed to transforming the learning opportunities and aspirations for its students and the communities in which they live. We are committed to playing our part in giving young peo-ple the education and opportunities they need to succeed in a changing world.

Dear Students and Parents, The Mark Hall Academy PTA is delighted to announce our first fundraiser for the Academy’s new minibus. ExL Young Driver Centre has very kindly donated 5 vouchers (one per year group) for a one hour driving lesson at their off-road track in Edinburgh Way. All students are able to receive a driving lesson. These vouchers will be raffled at £5 per ticket and the draw will be open to all year groups attending Mark Hall Academy and the lucky winners will be announced during the last week of assemblies of this academic year. The winners’ names will also be posted on the bulletin and website. The lesson will be tailored to students’ own skill level and may include approach-ing junctions, roundabouts, gear changes and manoeuvres. Don’t worry if your son/daughter is not very tall: the instructor can help with the pedals. You can find out more on Facebook: EXL Young Driver Centre. If you would like the chance for your son/daughter to win one of these vouchers, please complete and return the form below to Mrs Butler. The deadline for slips to be returned will be the 28th June 2019. Please do not send any money at this stage. Once we have received your com-pleted form, one of the PTA members will contact you by email with payment de-tails and a reference number to be quoted on your bank transfer. When payment is received your name will be entered into the draw. We hope that you are as excited about this amazing opportunity as we are. If this raffle works well and is popular, we and ExL hope to make it an on-going, termly event. This is a fantastic way to launch our PTA and the minibus fund. If you would like to join the MHA PTA, please tick the box on the form below.

Good luck!

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TO ALL PARENTS/CARERS AND STUDENTS FOR ARRIVING ON TIME TO THE ACADEMY!

THIS IS A GREAT START TO YOUR CHILD’S BUSY DAY AHEAD!

THE ARRANGEMENTS FOR ARRIVING AT THE ACADEMY POSTED IN LAST WEEK’S BULLETIN HAVE BEEN A GREAT SUCCESS!

I would just like to mention that we are aware when there are problems with buses and traffic and allowances are made for these occurrences. Also, thank you to all parents/carers who have called in to say their child may be late for a particular reason.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………….. ATTENDANCE & PUNCTUALITY

STUDENTS ARRIVING TO THE ACADEMY Just a reminder that all students must enter the Academy via the London Road entrance by 08:40am. Students arriving by car must be dropped off in the Sports Centre car park. Students must not be dropped off by car at the main school entrance except for known arrangements already agreed by the Academy. STUDENTS ARRIVING LATE TO THE ACADEMY We expect all students to be punctual. If your child is late they must still enter the Academy via the London Road entrance up to 08:55am where a member of staff will take their name and a C3 detention may be issued. Late arrivals by car should also be dropped off in the Sports Centre car park. They should then walk to the London Road entrance. Arrivals after 08:55am – Students should enter via the Main Academy with a written/ phone message reason for being late from a parent/carer.

Students who persistently arrive late to the Academy will be referred to our Attendance Consultants.

REPORTING THE ABSENCE OF YOUR CHILD To inform us that your child will be absent we ask that you telephone the school on 01279 866280 and press Option 4 for the absence line/Attendance Officer. For safeguarding reasons we ask that you report your child absent at the start of the school day, preferably by 08:00am. For safeguarding reasons, we check any unreported absences daily and you will receive a text or email

from the Attendance Officer if you have not telephoned the student absence line. MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS If you child has a medical/dental appointment, please inform the Attendance Officer via the absence line prior to the appointment. ATTENDANCE MONITORING All student’s attendance is monitored every week. Should we have any concerns, you will be contacted by our Attendance Consultants who may invite you in for a meeting. The Academy has issued a number of penalty fines this year for irregular attendance and holidays in term time so we cannot stress enough how im-portant it is for your child to attend well. We want your child to achieve and attendance is an extremely important factor. Government Research has shown that where attendance levels fall below 95% a students’ academic per-formance and achievement is badly affected. Thanking you all in anticipation of your support. Regards Mrs P Lane Attendance Officer

Article for Discussion/Debate Ban phones in schools, says minister Nick Gibb Pupils should be banned from taking smartphones into school, the minister for school standards in England has told the BBC. Nick Gibb spoke out ahead of the government publishing new guidance for schools, expected to address internet safety, social media and online gaming. It is expected to say children should be taught to limit the amount of time they spend online. Schools have the power to ban phones from being taken on to the premises. But government policy is that it is the responsibility of head teachers to determine whether this is appropriate. Patsy Kane, executive head teacher at the Education and Leadership Trust in Manchester, said Mr Gibb's plan was "missing the point on just how fantastically useful mobile phones can be for learning." She told BBC Breakfast her multi-academy trust encour-ages the responsible use of smartphones during lessons and that teachers do remove the devices if they are used inappropriately during school time. She added: "There's a fantastic range of apps now for revision - and the students are really motivated to use them."

Should phones be allowed in schools? Ofsted chief inspector backs phones ban Schools 'should have consistent policy on phones' French MPs back mobile phone ban in schools

The trade union that represents head teachers has expressed its scepticism about outright bans. But Mr Gibb said: "Many schools have already taken the decision to ban mobile phones from the classroom. "While this is clearly a matter for the head teacher, my own view is that schools should ban their pupils from bringing smartphones into school or the classroom." Katie Ivens, of the Campaign for Real Education, said she supported a classroom ban but that pupils should be allowed to carry phones to and from school for safety. What is known as "relationships education" is to become compulsory from September 2020, with schools being encouraged to teach it from September of this year. 'Balancing time' Last summer, the government published draft guidance about how this could be implemented. "Children and young people are growing up in an increasingly complex world and living their lives seamlessly on and offline," it said. But it acknowledged that while this presented "many positive and exciting opportunities" there were also "challenges and risks". Since the publication of the document, which said "pupils should be taught about the benefits of balancing time spent on and of-fline", there have been more than 11,000 responses to it and new guidance is expected soon. "Children should not be spending hours and hours on their smartphones or iPads. There are obviously huge benefits to the inter-net and there's nothing intrinsically damaging about spending time online," Mr Gibb said. "But if the time children spend using social media or playing computer games becomes excessive, it drives out time for them to talk to their parents, exercise, do their homework or play with friends. "It eats into the amount of sleep and rest children have, resulting in their coming into school the next day tired and unable to con-centrate." The minister, who has spent more than six years at the Department for Education, added: "Ensuring children can regulate their own use of smartphones and social media is becoming an increasingly important life skill for them to learn." But the NAHT union, which represents school leaders, has said banning pupils from taking a mobile phone to school can be counterproductive. Giving evidence to the Commons Science and Technology Committee in October last year, the union's senior policy adviser Sa-rah Hannafin said: "Mobile phone bans certainly work for some schools but there isn't one policy that will work for all schools. "Outright banning mobile phones can cause more problems than it solves, driving phone use 'underground' and making problems less visible and obvious for schools to tackle." She added: "Ultimately, schools work to prepare young people for the outside world, giving them the awareness and strategies to responsibly monitor their own screen use and the ability to identify and deal with any negative impacts or problematic content they encounter."
