Our mission at DVIA is “Engaging students in a 21st century, virtual

learning environment for a lifetime of success”. YOU, the student, are our

purpose and our mission!

Our theme will continue as: “BE…DVIA”. To “Be” DVIA we expect you

to “Be…Committed”, “Be…Focused”, “Be…Self-reliant”, “Be……”. I

challenge each of you to find your “Be…” as a DVIA student. Think deeply

and honestly, how can you “BE” successful in a virtual world? A graphic of

our theme is on our website.

We have wonderful teachers and staff who are absolutely committed to

your academic success. We are very proud of our commitment to getting to

know you, the student, on a personal level. Yes, we can do this in our

“virtual world.”

Our “Virtual Campus” (VC) is another positive and personal opportunity

for support. The Virtual Campus (VC) is a place where students may

interact with our teachers. In the Virtual Campus, you are able to chat live

with our teachers during a scheduled lesson or to problem solve and get to

know those who support you. The availability of the VC will be scheduled

through your teachers and/or posted on your student Dashboard.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

All student work must be authentic. Students must submit 100% of their own work, 100% of the time.

Consequences for cheating can be found in the AI matrix.

Parents/guardians are responsible for understanding DVIA’s Academic Integrity Policy and must understand

the expectations for their student’s work.

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE FOR

INITIAL AND CONTINUED ENROLLMENT

At Duval Virtual, student success

and proper placement is a

priority. There are no minimum

GPA or test score requirements

for enrollment eligibility.

However, virtual school is not a

good fit for everyone. We look at

each student as an individual.

During the enrollment process,

each student is screened and

counseled on the best

educational placement. After

enrollment, students who are not

successful will also be counseled

to ensure the student is in the

best possible place to succeed.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES

AND AP TESTING If a student is enrolled in an Advanced Placement course, they

are expected to take the AP exam for that course. For a list of AP

course offerings, please contact the school counselor. Please

remember, this enrollment option is dependent on course

availability and is applicable to 9-12th students only.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE OF STUDENTS During our Live Campus hours and other school related events at the Live Campus, parents

must sign in/out each student. When students are visiting other campuses for testing and other

activities, parents and students need to follow the procedures of the school they are visiting.

Until notified, masks will be required.

ATHLETIC/EXTRACURRICULAR ELIGIBILITY

Students may be eligible to participate in sports at their neighborhood school. Students should contact their neighborhood school and the district athletic

website for forms and additional information. Students interested in programs such as band or ROTC should contact the neighborhood school.

POLICIES, PROCEDURES AND

GENERAL INFORMATION

ATTENDANCE/ABSENCES Attendance/absences are determined by the student’s overall weekly individual course progression. In K-5th grade, course progression is determined by the completion of required checkpoints. In 6th-12th grade, required progress is approximately 1% of each course each school day. Teachers will use percentage completion and overall week progress to determine absences. School attendance is marked every Monday for the previous week. Note: Weekly pace may be set to more than 1% a day and elementary weekly required checkpoints may vary per subject and grade. Students who do not complete required weekly progress will be marked absent accordingly.

CLASS/COURSE VISITATION

All middle and high school courses (classes) are in the

virtual setting. Parents/guardians can “visit” the courses

by using their parent/mentor credentials or working

with their child to login and view the course. When

parents are visiting the Live Campus, they should wait in

designated parent waiting areas.

COMPUTER / TECHNOLOGY ACCESSABILITY

Students are expected to have the necessary technology to

work in this program. Upon enrollment, students should

secure a working computer and internet. If you do not have

this technology available, please contact our office. There

are limited computers available for use at the Live Campus

during open hours.

CURRICULUM PROVIDERS and STUDENT ACCOUNTS*

Providers Courses will be provided by designated curriculum providers. These providers are school board and state approved. Secondary students may work with multiple providers in different learning platforms. The main provider for DVIA is Edgenuity (K-12). There are a limited number of courses that students may take through the Duval Virtual FLVS Franchise.

Student Accounts Elementary – All parents and students use an Edgenuity account that is created for them by administration upon DVIA registration. Secondary – All 6th-12th students will need to have an Edgenuity and FLVS account. If a student needs to create one or both of these accounts, follow the directions at www.duvalschools.org/dvia/studentaccounts to create new accounts. Existing Accounts- EDGENUITY - Students with an existing Edgenuity account should let their counselor know. Do NOT create a new account. FLVS - Students with an existing FLVS account, please update your Student Records tab in FLVS to show the Physical School AND Virtual School are both listed as “Duval Virtual Instruction Academy” and the School Counselor is Ms. Ramscar (9-12) or Ms. Garceau (6-8).

DEBT LIST Students will be placed on the debt

list for failure to turn in:

DRESS CODE Students should adhere to the Duval County School Board dress code policy when attending Live Campus or testing at neighborhood schools. Graduating seniors must adhere to the same dress code during commencement exercises.

Traditional Dual Enrollment

Dual enrollment provides students in 11th and 12th grade the opportunity to enroll in postsecondary courses creditable toward high school completion and an associate or baccalaureate degree. To ensure the greatest relevancy toward a postsecondary degree, emphasis will be placed on courses within the general education core curriculum. Students must meet eligibility criteria specified in the Dual Enrollment Articulation Agreement (DEAA).

Students enrolled with Duval Virtual are able to enroll in Dual Enrollment if they are eligible. For more information on dual enrollment and eligibility, review the chart below or look on the DCPS website. Please note, FSCJ has strict enrollment dates. If you are a Duval Virtual student and interested in dual enrollment, please contact our guidance office at 390-2037.

2020-2021 ELEMENTARY POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

• Students enrolled in DVIA may be required to attend our live campus at various times

throughout the year to participate in teacher led assessments to include Edgenuity curriculum

tests, DRA reading, or any other assessment deemed necessary.

• Students in Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade will have required live assessments with a

DVIA teacher. These assessments may be scheduled virtually or at our live campus.

• Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade will have required assessments (in addition to taking the

FSA and other state required testing). These assessments may be scheduled virtually or at our

live campus.

• To ensure that students are performing at the appropriate academic level, students who score

below grade level (or have failing grades) on assessments may be required to attend academic

intervention sessions at our live and/or virtual campus a minimum of 1 time per week. Once

the standards are mastered, the time requirement may be reduced.

• If your student is unable to attend any scheduled assessments, a current doctor's note must be

provided.

• Students are required to complete all state mandated testing. DVIA will inform you of your

testing site as well as that school's testing coordinator's contact information.

If you have any questions regarding the requirements for your student,

please reach out to your elementary teacher

EARLY DISMISSAL DAYS

Teachers may not be available for immediate response on Early Dismissal days. The school reserves certain hours on these days for teachers and administrators to meet. School work

assigned on these days is not adjusted and students should work as normal.

EXCEPTIONAL STUDENT SERVICES/ACCOMMODATIONS

Our program has several built-in accommodations to meet the needs of students. Our ESE

teacher works with teachers and students to ensure success. We are a home-based program

and therefore have a limited facility to offer certain services. However, we will work with you

to get certain services at your neighborhood school. Please contact our office if you have

specific questions regarding ESE.

FOOD SERVICES

While DVIA does not participate in the free or reduced breakfast/lunch program, all students

are encouraged to fill out the free or reduced lunch form. There may be certain benefits available

GRADES/GRADE SCALE/FINAL GRADES/ REPORT CARD/GRADE CHANGES

Elementary grades are posted by teachers every 9 weeks. Middle and high school semester grades are submitted at the end of each semester. Final grades for courses can be confirmed by the individual teacher and may be dependent on EOC scores. Middle and high report cards are distributed at Live Campus after the 1st semester. All report cards will be mailed home at the end of the school year.

Grade changes are subject to the teacher’s completion of the grade change form.

A= 90%-100% (4 points)

B= 80%-89% (3 points)

C= 70%-79% (2 points)

D= 60%-69% (1 point)

F= 59% and below

How does Virtual School Work?

ELEMENTARY K-5 uses an online curriculum with lessons, resources, and activities which is accomplished by

consumables for each subject. Students are issued workbooks in which to complete their assignments following

their online daily lesson in all subject areas. Lessons have a timeline and due date to be in compliance with the

district and grading requirements. While schooling with DVIA provides a flexible schedule, students are required to

complete work daily and follow the DCPS calendar to get work submitted for quarterly and end of year grades.

SECONDARY Students will work from their own computer at home or other location to complete their

assigned courses. Teachers will communicate with students through emails, messages, texts, over the phone, in the

Virtual Campus, and at the Live Campus. Students will have a pacing guide/chart/assignment calendar that will be

available in their courses to serve as a schedule for students. All required courses are assigned by DVIA staff to the

student’s account/dashboard in Edgenuity or FLVS.

DVIA’s Live Campus (LC) is located at a DCPS school and staffed with DVIA teachers.

DVIA has a Virtual Campus through Blackboard Collaborate. Teachers are logged in to this virtual classroom/office to help students and parents throughout the school year.

Duval Virtual requires that all students have access to the internet. Our programs and courses are largely built around digital content. It is the parent's responsibility

to provide and maintain constant and dependable internet. Students that do not have access to the internet will fall behind pace and be in danger of

failing. It is recommended that that the parent secure internet before the school year starts! One resource for

discounted internet is through

MAKE UP WORK

Student work is assigned on a semester basis for 6th-12th grade and a 9 weeks basis

for K-5th grade. If a student falls behind pace or has to be out of school for an extended

period on time, the student should plan to work extra time to make up for the missed

assignments. Students should check the assignment calendar/checkpoints in the

learning system to see specified timelines. All course work is due at the end of each

semester for 6th -12th grade and at the end of each 9 weeks for K-5th grade. Students

requesting extension for make-up work after the semester/9 weeks is over must have

expressed permission from their teacher and/or administration.

Parent/teacher/student communication is strongly encouraged throughout the year. Parents are

encouraged to contact their child’s teachers directly. In addition to phone contact/individual

conferences, parents may be invited to attend an online conference in the Virtual Conference

Room or in-person conference at Live Campus. Virtual Conferences are scheduled by a lead

teacher and will be confirmed via email. A link for the conference and an optional call in number

will be provided. In-person conferences will be scheduled as needed. Parent/Teacher/Student

conferences may be REQUIRED for students who are 20% or more behind pace.

TEXTBOOKS

Elementary – Workbooks are

distributed at the beginning of the school

year. Late enrollees will schedule a pick-up

TESTING

Procedures and Policies All DVIA students are responsible for sitting for all baseline and state-mandated testing identified by their grade level

and/or course schedule. Florida law also requires that all virtual students take their respective state assessments during

the administration period. These tests may include Florida Standards Assessments (FSAs), End-of-Course Exams (EOCs),

and/or Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) assessments. Students will be assigned to their testing sites by

District staff. DVIA students should have a valid photo ID and follow the DCPS dress code when testing at their assigned

testing location.

Listed below are the current tests required for all Duval Virtual students. DVIA’s testing coordinator will provide

verification of your student’s testing location and his/her required assessments. Verification will be sent via email and

through the student’s learning platform message system. Any DVIA teacher will be able to inform you of the assigned

testing location, date and time when the details are available. It is the parent/guardian responsibility to ensure they know

when the specific location, dates and times are for their student’s required testing. Per Florida House Bill 7069, Pg. 58, Lines

5976-5985: "(6) STUDENT PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS - Each student enrolled in a virtual instruction program or virtual charter

school must: (b) Take statewide assessments pursuant to s. 1008.22. Student assessment program for public schools.”

Testing Windows Many state assessments are computer based (CBT) and testing dates within the window vary by testing location. Grades 3-

6 FSA and NGSSS Science tests are paper-based (PBT) and have a tighter window and/or limited locations. Please see

Students transferring to another school, in or out of county, must complete the withdrawal

process through our website: www.duvalschools.org/dvia/withdrawal. Elementary

students must return ALL textbooks and supplies upon withdrawal. Students with a

district issued laptop and/or printer must return the equipment. Failure to return these

items may delay records request and the withdrawal process. All students must complete

an Exit Interview and Intent to Withdraw form.

WITHDRAWAL

WELLNESS WEDNESDAYS

In response to State legislation, Duval County has implemented a required Mental Health

Education Initiative. DVIA will begin the mandatory sessions for all students in grades 6-

12 on August 26th, 2020 at 12:30 pm in the Virtual Campus. The Virtual Campus link is

below for your convenience.

The goal of the Mental Health Education Initiative is to teach students to identify signs and

symptoms of mental health challenges and how to access help for themselves and their

peers. There will be a total of ten lessons throughout the school year, occurring on district

scheduled “early release” Wednesdays. Some of the topics included will be: the process of

getting and seeking help for yourself and others, what to do or say to peers struggling with

mental health disorders, and awareness of resources.

If students are sick, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to attend, they will be expected to

attend the recorded make-up session at their earliest convenience, which will be located in

Microsoft Teams.
