Ngubane said on Monday, the union met with the employer bodies to seek clarity on issues pertaining to the demands of the workers. “We are exhausting all our negoti- ation skills. If the strike is prolonged, it will have a detrimental effect not only on employees, but also on a number of companies in the steel industry. This just puts pressure on all of us involved in the negotiations,” said Ngubane. Numsa is a union representing over 220 000 workers in the metal and engineering sector in South Africa. Numsa wants a total ban on labour brokers, catering for the needs of employees who work short time, a housing allowance of not less than R1 000 per month for each worker in the industry, training of staff and the recognition of shopstewards. The Master Builders of South Afri- ca (MBSA) are also holding a strike which has just entered its fourth week, causing a building material shortage. In a statement, Dlamini said, “The plumbing industry has reported a critical shortage of geysers and the piling sector, which relies heavily on steel reinforcement for foundation work, is struggling to obtain supplies. Intimidation is taking place outside factories which means that MBSA members cannot collect roof sheeting and structural steel. This new setback could well be the last straw for many struggling contractors.” Last week, Numsa rejected the conditional offer from the employer body, Steel and Engineering Indus- tries Federation of Southern Africa (Seifsa), of a 10% increase in 2014, 9.5% in 2015 and 9% in 2016. Seifsa eventually withdrew this of- fer and by last week Friday, had an- nounced that the new offer on the ta- ble was 10% in 2014, 9% in 2015 and 8% in 2016 for rate H workers; 8% in 2014, 7.5% in 2015 and 7% in 2016 for rate A employees. Seifsa said that the strike has already cost the country more than R300 million a day in the engineering and metals sector alone. Some local steel companies voiced their frustrations. One of the management repre- sentatives from local company Rogue Steel said that if the strike continues for the next two to three weeks, family owned steel companies that have limited resources might have to close their doors. “One of our delivery trucks was stopped by striking Numsa members while out delivering in Pinetown. We ended up not delivering to one of our clients and we had to come back with the stock. “We are currently not getting any replacement of stock. This is not a fair strike because there are Numsa union members who want to be back at work. “A lot of people could lose their jobs. It is not a rosy picture,” said the manager who preferred to remain unnamed. A manager from NJR Steel said that the company has suffered short- falls because its suppliers have not been able to fulfil deliveries. “One of the company vehicles was capsized while making deliveries in Durban. There was a security company on site so they were able to report the matter to the police on our behalf. If the strike continues for the next three weeks, most of our stock will be depleted.” Meanwhile, Pietermaritzburg car dealerships have said that they are not affected by the strike. The national spokesperson of Toyota, Mary Willemse, said that Toyota has suspended production on its Corolla and Innovative Multipur- pose Vehicle (IMV) lines. This in- cludes the Hilux and Fortuner pro- duction. “Production on Quantum (mini buses) and truck plants still contin- ues,” said Willemse. Economist Mike Schussler said that South African steel manufactur- ing stands at 22% and contributes to about 14% of the national economy growth. He said that no production is making the economy decline. “The strike is also hitting general purpose machinery. So it is directly affecting about 3,5% of the economy. Construction and motor manufactur- ing is also indirectly affected, which probably then affects about 10% of the total South African economy,” he said. Schussler added that the Rand will remain under pressure more so than before. “If the Rand weakens, it will be evenworseforpriceswhichwillagain go up,” he said. Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business CEO Melanie Veness said that there are quite a number of businesses in the metal industry that have been adversely affected by the strike. She said that the local steel manu- facturing industry is a critical component which contributes to the local gross domestic product (GDP), hence it constitutes some of Pieterma- ritzburg’s largest employers. “An inability to meet order obliga- tions can result in penalties for business and/or the loss of future or- ders, constraining the economy further. “Prolonged labour action can close businesses down, resulting in job losses, as opposed to wage increas- es for some. “Prolonged strikes also make us unattractive from an investment point of view. They make employing people unattractive and increase the business case for mechanization,” said Veness. For constant updates on the strike and wage negotiations, visit www.pmbfever.co.za. NQOBILE MTOLO>>[email protected] IT is still not clear yet whether Telkom’s

management staff in Pietermaritzburg willbe affected by the company’s restructuring

and retrenchment processes. The Telkom national office had publicly

stated that the management pool, which thecompany seeks to reduce, ismadeof up to2650managerial staff.

Through these retrenchments, Telkomstates that it wants to bring services closerto people by getting rid of unnecessarylevels of management, improving customerservice and experience.

Telkom stated that the restructuringwill keep the business afloat as it has failed tomeet revenue targets.

Telkom’s communications manager, PyneeChetty, said that he could not exactlysayhowmanymembers frommanagementarelikely to be affected since processes arestill ongoing.

However, he said that since most ofthe staff from the management pool is basedin Johannesburg, there is the likelihood thatmost of the retrenchments will hit there.

Telkom has a regional office in Durbanand the retrenchments might affect asmall number of employees in that area, saidChetty.

“It is unlikely that we might be having

retrenchments in Pietermaritzburg, howeverthe processes are still ongoing,” he said.

Earlythismonth,Telkomstatedthatthroughthe restructuring and retrenchment process,it is not targeting specific individuals, butmainly wants to reduce management layersand employee costs, with the latter costing thecompany 30% of revenue.

Telkom stated that it had considered anumber of options in order to avoid retrench-ments, by offering voluntary separationand early retirement options to staff, expand the revenue base and getting rid offruitless investments.

On Monday and Tuesday, Telkom hadfacilitated consultation meetings with workerrepresentatives, including the CommunicationWorkers Union (CWU), on how the restructur-ing and retrenchment processes will bestructured.

Brazen gang smash homeFour escape after daring robbery at Montrose home and shootout with police on Sunday

MLONDI RADEBEAND STEPHANIE SAVILLE

A ROBBER gang brazenly smashed theirway into a Montrose home, ignoringwarnings that police and security com-

panies were en-route.Despite having been seen, being told police

were on their way and a blaring house alarmsounding off, the robber gang broke down aglass door and grabbed a TV, laptop, cellphones and other items before fleeing.

Brothers Thomas (20) and James Martin(18) were at home in Montrose on Saturdaynight - Thomas’s last night before returning toStellenbosch University - when James let thedog out at about 10 pm.

“Inoticedthefrontgatewasslightlyopened.I called my brother to come and see because Ithought he had left it open by mistake. As hecame out, one suspect was standing in front ofour garage.

“Weshouted tohimthatwewerecalling thepoliceandaskedwhathewasdoinginouryard. He approached us, saying ‘Calm down, calmdown’. Thenwe ran into the house and lockedthe doors,” said James.

The brothers pressed a panic button andarmed themselves with baseball bats.

It appeared that therewere four suspects inthe yard armed with a gun and knives.

“They used a verandah chair to smash theglass door. We were shouting at them that thepolice were on their way but they took no no-tice.Theywerenotscared,”saidJames,addingthat one spoke English well.

After the robbers made off with their loot, they encountered police and security compa-nies who responded to the desperate cry forhelp from the two youngsters at the MontroseDrive house.

The robbers opened fire on police, who re-turned fire. It’sbelievedoneof the robberswasshot in the leg as he and his accomplicesmadea quick getaway. A resident some 300 metresawayapparently foundbloodtrailingdowntheverandah of his home.

ER24 was asked to attend the scene by SACAN. Andrew Rogers of ER24 said theychecked the youngsters over and found theywere fine.

The police were unable to find the robbers, who sources speculatedwerewell-acquaintedwith the area and their escape routes. The TV

AS a first step, theMandela Day cleanup to address the

dirty streets of PMB shouldbe lauded.

However, dirty streets arethe result of a way of life bymessy people. Unless serious ef-forts are made to change the “dirtspreading” way of life of thosemembers of the public who causethe dirty streets, the battle will notbe won - ever.

I recollect anoccasionpre-1994when the then Parks Board hadinvited members of the then NatalMEC’s and some KwaZulu-Natalcabinet ministers on a tour of oneof the game reserves.

The Parks Board officials hadbrought along a cooler bag withcans of cool drinks.

After a longwalk in the reserve, the party sat down in the open veldto have some drinks. Before wecontinued, one of the ministers

chucked his empty canunder one of the bushes. I remem-ber Mr Geddes Page responding“No, Mr Minister. Not like that.”

He thenwent and picked up theempty can and put it back into thecooler bag to dispose of it back atthe office. Thatwas an educationalgesture.

If the way of life cannot beinstilled at home in the family, itshouldbeanextra-curriculareffortat every school.

THE streets of Pietermaritzburgwerefilledwitheagerresidentsparticipating in the city clean

upinitiativeincelebrationofMandelaDay this year.

Whether it was businesses andorganizations cleaning up theirpremisesandsurrounds, orresidentscleaning up their streets with theirneighbours, countlesspeopleworkedtogether to clean up the city.

Melanie Veness, director of thePietermaritzburg Chamber ofBusiness, said that therewasastrongpresence from city businesses.

“The response was very positive, with large and small enterprisesdoingtheirbit foracleanercity.Whilecleaning the city is a municipalfunction, it is citizens that dirty thecity,” she said.

She added that everyone has aresponsibility to educate children, fellow citizens and staff about notlittering.

“We need to set a good example. Iapplaud all those who took to thestreets to clean our beautiful city andto set an example,” said Veness.

One of the participating organiza-tions was the Gay and LesbianNetwork, whichtookupthechallengeand cleaned up the street from itsoffice, down Langalibalele Street, toTheatre Lane and Timber Street.

A total of 15 bags of rubbish werecollected and were left on thepavement for the municipality wastedepartment to collect.

Anthony Waldhausen, GLNdirector, said that it was a great day.

“What struck me most whenactuallycleaningupthestreets ishowfilthy they are, and that there is lackof pride amongst the citizens of ourcity who can litter and mess up thecity,” he said.

TWO Cowan House pupils experienced alittle bit of Madiba magic on Mandela Daywhile participating in the city clean up.

Catherine Johnson and Stephanie vanNiekerkdecided to spend their 67minutesclearing the litter along Dennis ShepstoneDrive near Cowan House.

They were quite daunted at thebeginning when they saw the rubbishstrewn all over the pavement, but armedwith black bags andmarigolds, they set towork.

The reactions of peopledrivingbywereencouraging; hoots and thumbs-up andshouts of thank you kept them going.

After 67 minutes, they still had abigsectionof thepavementneartheschoolgate to clear.

Johnson bent down to pick up somerubbish under an aloe and found atiny burnt piece of paper with onlyroom enough for one sentence:

“It always seems impossible until it’sdone,” Nelson Mandela.

Jones, nowlivinginBlackridge, was trained as a soldier at theBisley Valley (Oribi) army campandfought inWorldWar2in1939,when South Africa declared waragainst Germany.

Now 94 years old, Jones is theoldest serving member of theMemorable Order of Tin Hats(Moths) in the country, andprobably the third eldest in theworld.

“I have been a member of theMoths for 70 years,” he said.

Jones said he joined the ACFbecause the war was imminentand “it was adventurous”.

His father fought in the FirstWorld War (WW1) as a Captain.

Jones still drives a car and, although he suffers from hearingproblems, his memory is still verysharp when he talks about hisexperiences in the war.

“Thewartaughtmehowtoreadpeople. Icantellyoubyjust lookingat the person that they are eithergood or bad,” said Jones, sittingnext to his wife, Colleen.

The two met after he returnedfrom thewar, andweremarried in1954. Jones pulled up his trouserpants leg to show scars fromshrapnel.

“I was wounded after threeyears of fighting at the age of 21years old during the intenseBattleof Gazala in Egypt.”

After his injury, Jones movedback to SouthAfrica towork at theRailways, fixing locomotives inLadysmith.

“If Iwere todo it again, Iwould,to defend my country.”

How Jones escaped during the war:

Jones played a game of matches to escape from Egypt after he had beeninjured. He said many people wanted a place on the boat back to SouthAfrica, but there was only space for ten people.

“So we played a game of matches, where we had to guess how manymatches a person had been given,” he said.

Jones said he was lucky to be the first one selected for the boat ridewhen he guessed the correct number of matches a soldier held concealedin his hand.

“The war is not a wonderful thing to go to because it is not nice to killother people,” said Jones.

WORRYING about your PC monitor set up may seem pointless, butmulti-monitor set ups are all the rage these days, with the goal ofsignificantly improving productivity. According to a study from theUniversity of Utah:

*Peopleusingthe24-inchscreencompletedthetasks52%fasterthanpeople who used the 18-inch monitor.

* People who used the two 20-inch monitors were 44% faster thanthose with the 18-inch ones.

*Productivitydroppedoff againwhenpeopleuseda26-inchscreen.Let me be perfectly clear on this matter: more is more. More usable

desktop space reduces the amount of time you spend onwindowman-agementexcise.Insteadofincessantlydragging,sizing,minimizingandmaximizingwindows,youcandoactualproductivework.Witha largerdesktop, youcanspendlesstimemindlesslyarranginginformation, andmore time interacting with and acting on that information.

Howmuch thatmatters to youwill depend on your job andworkingstyle.

Personally, I’d be ecstatic if I never had to size, position, or arrangeanother window for the rest of my life.

Howmany monitors do you use on your smart biz desktop? I’d betone, and not a large one. May be time to move on up.
