They will be vying for the title of top Bee this Saturday, 23 August at the Eastwood hall in Eastwood. Media24 Local Newspapers KZN, owner of the local community newspaper titles Maritzburg Fever, Edendale Echo and Maritzburg Echo, has teamed up with the Office of the KwaZulu-Natal Premier to roll out the popular competition throughout the province. The spelling bee originally started in Zululand, and is currently enjoying its fifth year there. Outstanding spellers from previ- ously disadvantaged schools stand to walk away with thousands of rands in prizes, including cash for the top spellers and their teachers, books for top spellers and their schools, as well as goodie bags for all teachers and spellers. A former teacher himself, KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu said it is critical that the talent and potential of the youth is fully developed and harnessed to guarantee the continu- ous socio-economic development of the province and the country. “In doing so, we will ensure that we deal decisively with the triple chal- lenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality,” he said earlier this year. Commenting on the official KZN Premier Spelling Bee Facebook page, pupils who will be taking part in the competition expressed confidence that they know all the pre-selected words which have been printed in the Maritzburg Fever and the two Echo publications. Grade 11 pupil Xolisile Makhathi- ni from Sobantu Secondary School said, “Preparing for the competition has given me an added opportunity to broaden my English vocabulary. I am looking forward to Saturday.” Sobantu Secondary principal Hopewell Majozi said that he is fascinated by the whole idea. “There are words that we take for granted and I have been challenged to look up those words to find their true meaning. This competition has made us realize the true meaning of vocabulary.” The school’s head of department for languages, Nkosi Mdluli, said that with the arrival of social networks, using the correct English spelling has become a serious problem among pupils. “If you spell the word wrong, the meaning of the sentence might totally be distorted. We hope that the two pupils from our school will do exceptionally well and take top position,” he said with a laugh. Pupils have had almost two months to learn the words that were released on 18 June. The first leg of this year’s competi- tion was held in Richards Bay three weeks ago, where 16-year-old Wendy Goqo from Mningi High spelled her way to the top spot and was crowned the 2014 champion for the Zululand region. The South Coast event, held last weekend, was won by Siyabonga Shandu. On Saturday, spellers are required to take their birth certificates or ID books to the event and should be accompanied by no more than two supporters, one of which must be an English teacher. Pupils and schools who have not entered through official channels prior to the event will not be allowed to take part. For those schools who have entered, registration takes place at 8am sharp. Spellers need to be in the hall and seated by 8.30am. The competition starts at 9am. THE KZN Department of Healthis on high alert for an outbreakof the Ebola Virus Disease

(EVD).KZN Department of Health

spokesperson,DesmondMotha, saidthat the department has stepped upEbola precautions and a number oflocal health experts have beentrained on how to tackle the deadlydisease.

He said that training is ongoingand that health officials will haveprotective clothing on at all timeswhen treating Ebola.

Motha said that there has not yetbeen any reports of people infectedwith the Ebola virus in the province. He said that stringent checks arecarriedoutatentrypoints toKZNandthe country.

“We are ready. Health ministerAaron Motsoaledi has chosenAddingtonHospital inDurbanas oneof the 11 hospitals in the country

which will treat Ebola. The hospitalhas a special isolation unit witheightwardswhereEbolapatientswillreceive medical attention.

“We have trained doctors, radiog-raphers and nurses who have beenequipped with the skills to handleinfection control,” said Motha.

This Maritzburg Fever reporterhas gathered that a 2006 report fromthe KZN Department of Healthreveals that in the uMgungundlovuDistrict, there is a committee whichwas formed to prepare for patientswho have a Lethal CommunicableDisease (LCD).

The list of LCDs include Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF),Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome(Sars), bird flu,MarburgFever,Ebolafever and the Lassa and Rift Valleyfever. The report states that thiscommittee isbasedatGreysHospital.

On Monday it was reported that a

37-year-oldman suspected of havingEbola tested negative for the disease. It has been reported that the man,who has not been identified, workedasahealthandsafetyofficer inaminein Liberia. The countries hit by EbolaincludeLiberia,SierraLeone,Guineaand Nigeria. How is Ebola transmitted?

Ebola is introduced into thehuman population through closecontact with the blood, secretions, organsorotherbodily fluidsof infect-ed animals. In Africa, infection hasbeen documented through thehandling of infected chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forestantelope and porcupines found ill ordead in the rainforest.

Ebola thenspreads in the commu-nity through human-to-humantransmission, with infection result-ing from direct contact (throughbroken skin or mucous membranes)with the blood, secretions, organs orother bodily fluids of infected people, and indirect contact with environ-mentscontaminatedwithsuchfluids.Burial ceremonies in which mourn-ers have direct contact with the bodyof the deceased person can also playa role in the transmission of Ebola.Men who have recovered from thedisease can still transmit the virusthrough their semen for up to sevenweeks after recovery from illness.(Source: WHO)Signs and symptoms

Symptoms include the suddenonset of fever, intense weakness,

muscle pain, headache and sorethroat. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, impairedkidneyandliverfunction, andinsomecases, bothinternal and external bleeding.

People are infectious as long astheirbloodandsecretionscontainthevirus.

“It is also important to note that, after contractingEbola, it can takeupto 21 days to show symptoms of thedisease, although eight to 10 days ismore common. Until a person

exhibits symptoms, they are notcontagious, so you don’t need to beconcerned about getting the virusfrom apparently healthy individuals. There isalso lowriskof spreading theinfection in the early stages of theillness,” said Dr Vincent. (Sources:WHO and Netcare)

THE campaign to find Pietermaritzburg’s YoungLady with Heart is gaining momentum, with theorganizers visiting a number of schools

encouraging peers and teachers to nominate a Grade11 school girl who is kind and generous.

“Last year, we received such positive feedbackfrom the girls who had been nominated for thisaward. The girls said that they felt special andworthy and as an organizing committee, webelieve that this statement is significant becauseit has a ripple effect through not only that younglady’s life, but through her circle of friends, her

family and school,” said one of the organizers, LaraEdmonds.

The nomination fee has been decreased to R10so there is now even more opportunity fornominations and for peers and teachers to actuallynominate several deserving young ladies.

“We believe that there are more than 10 youngladies, at least, at each school who need anddeserve to be nominated. So let’s do this andmake her feel worthy,” said organizer, UrsuhlaGovender, who addressed the girls at Russell High andNorthbury High schools last

THE online storage industry has seen exponential growth over the lasttwo years and has made many lives easier.

Ifyouareunfamiliarwith theconcept, onlinestoragerefers toaserv-ice that allows you to backup and store important files on the internet.By doing this, you almost completely reduce the risk of data loss. Thereare three main contenders in the online storage department. There isMicrosoft’s OneDrive (previously known as SkyDrive), Google’s GoogleDrive and last, but not least, DropBox. All three of these products comewith their own pros and cons, which would take numerous articles tocover, so we won’t go much into the details.

The important sections of each of these products are just about thesame. All three of these companies can guarantee privacy and safety, therefore your datawill only be accessible to you, unless you choose toshare some if it with other parties.

All three of these services allows you access to a minimum amountof storage for free, which will allow you to test the product before sub-scribing to it. Ido feel itworthmentioning thatDropBox is themostuserfriendly one of the three (however it is also more expensive).

In conclusion, save yourphoto’s online, save yourdocuments onlineandmake sure youdon’t lose anything importantwhen your computerruns into trouble.

DAVE FALL - WHEELS24

RENAULT’S Megane has, in name atleast, been with us since 1995.

It’s always been the brand’s halomodel and the trend is about to continuewith the latest incarnation for 2014 albeitwith two allnew siblings this time around a trilogy available in fivedoor hatch orthreedoor coupe all incidentally, sportingidentical pricing.

In an age where cars tend to look mostlythe same, it’s pleasing to see the latestMegane threedoor coupe (the only versionon show at launch) will become instantlyrecognisable for its assertive design andfuturistic styling and that’s meant as acompliment.

From the outside, there’s lots of energetic and upmarket character via its standoutfront bumper which includes daytimerunning lights, while the rear bumper boastsan integrated diffuser and smart 17” darkgrey alloys (GTLine).

Refinement and coherence are thekeywords here, with the side mirrors andexterior door handles also highlighted in adark grey finish. Get inside the cabin and thesuperb refinement levels are immediatelyobvious with a combination of cloth/fabric(or leather on the flagship model).

Intuitive and convenient onboard experiencecontinues thanks to theintegrated navigation with Live Connectivity (LC) andthe Renaultkeycard withhandsfreelocking/unlocking functionality.

Additionalfeatures include power windows (front andrear) and power sidemirrors, dual climate control, cruise control with speedlimiter, rear parking sensors, Bluetoothconnectivity, Radio CD MP3 with a USB portplus fingertip controls located behind thesteering wheel.

Constantly connected via satellite, theLCsystempicksuptrafficupdateswithrouteoptimisation of any traffic congestion(accidents and road works for example) andproactively proposes a modified route

enabling the driver to avoid slowdowns andget to his/her destination quickly.

While spacious enough up front in thetwo models driven at launch, I felt leg spacefor the rear passengers to be rather compromised but this may well be addressed inthe sedan versions, alas not verified

though. The top of the rangemodel is the GT Turbo

(162kW/340Nm)priced at R329 900,

GTLine Turbo(97kW/205Nm)with a ticket priceof R279 900,and the base level offering atR249 900

(81kW/205Nm) while all share the

same DNA (andgreat looks), individu

ally they address customer’s expectations in a

very different way. This may come as a surprise but that

particular 97kW turbocharged motor offering max torque of 205Nm (available between 20003000rpm) is of only 1.2litrecapacity, improved even more thanks to itsoverboost function (peak torque at225Nm), definitely outperforming the 1.4–litre turbo it replaces by some margin. Even though thenew Turbo 97kWengine comes packedwith cuttingedge technologies, Renaultengineers have kept inmind the importance oflowering maintenancecosts. JONATHAN COOK

A PIETERMARITZBURG institu-tion is the best way to describethe success of PMB Girls’ High

School on the hockey field and itscontribution to the KZN capital as awhole.

Hockey has been an integral part ofthe school for decades, and its successis exemplified by the national andprovincial players to have come out ofthe Alexandra Road establishment.

Anne Davel and Audrey Mayne in

the 1950s and 60s; Shelagh Bowness,EileenFourie,MayTitlestad in the late60s and most of the 1970s; CarrynBentley, Karen Roberts and HeidiOosthuizen in the 1980s up to the turnof the 20th Century; Kara Stella, CeliaEvans, Tracy Bestall, Eloise Miskeyand Taryn de Winnaar post theMillennium have all worn the greenand gold, while countless numbershave played for the province at juniorand senior level.

This is by no means an exhaustivelistandtheremightbeothers, butthese

are the SA-capped players that imme-diately come to mind amongst formerGHS scholars canvassed by the Fever.

Some are married and have takentheir husbands’ names but wereinitially known on the hockey field bytheir maiden names, while others arenot GHS Old Girls but contributedenormously to the school as teachersand coaches.

Audrey Mayne (now Laidlaw) andShelagh Bowness and Karen RobertswereSAcaptainsintheirheyday, whileretired deputy principal Bowness’scontribution was honoured by theschool’s Greenfields Astro Turf beingnamed the Shelagh Bowness Field.

Taryn de Winnaar is the current,long-time first team coach and whathas been especially notable since thecountry’s independence in1994, is thenumber of players who do not comefrom a traditional hockey culture thathavebeenattracted to thesportatGHSand gone on to excel as SA Schools’representatives.

And no mention of GHS hockeycould be made without noting thepriceless contribution that ex-SAVarsities left wing Janet Edwards hasmade to KZN Inland hockey as anadministrator.

The GHS first team of 2014 havecontinued the long line of championteamsbywinning the Parklane Super-sparALeague in theKZNmidlands forthe umpteenth time in the school’shistory,
