Waves and sea states
Keeping this section brief
New information Climate change – completely new Wave characteristics – now more focus on spectral and
non-linear theories (previous heavily based in linear theory)
Offshore wave climate – new/ updated to focus more on use of global numerical hindcast sources rather than empirical hindcasts or visually observed data
New sections on joint (dependent) probability

Waves and sea states
Substantial re-writes of sections on numerical and
physical modelling New sections concerning wave actions on coastal
structures, including new sections on scour due to vessels.
Major re-write of section on wave action on walls and decks Not as definitive as in BS 6349 Part 1:2000.
Updated references taking account of most recent guidance/ literature available.
Re-writing to provide clearer distinction between normative recommendations and informative text.

Loadings and EC Interface
Presently BS 6349 Part 2 deals with the Eurocode interface
In future Part 1.2 will deal with it
Part 1.2 builds on experience of operating the Eurocodes.
Corrects some very long standing anomalies that existed since BS 6349 Part 2:1988 with respect to environmental loads. e.g. a misconception on the definition of “normal” and
“extreme” environmental conditions

Partial Factors
For most variable actions, partial factors have been set at 1.50.
For elastomeric fenders, typical partial factor has been set at 1.35 – a reduction
Because the latest version of Part 4 requires additional load to allow for tolerances in rubber.
Not reasonable increase load factors since loads are highly predictable and more factors are taken into account
Still some minor adjustments to be made.

Seismic issues
A first step into seismic design
Limited guidance at present
The whole of seismic design covers many issues which Part 1.2 does not cover
New seismic guidance will be included in other parts
For now, all we do is define the seismic action (ground motion)

Seismic issues
BS EN 1998 parts 1,2 and 5 are the key references
Definition of seismic guidance is structured to that.
PIANC produced a document WG34 in 2001
Most recent guidance is in ASCE 61-14.
There is goodwill from the UK seismic community to orient maritime seismic design towards EC8
But few people with the competence to organise it!

Seismic issues
EC 8 is based on 2 levels of earthquake
BS 6349 gives guidance on assessing them
Ground motions have similar return periods to those in EC8 rather than PIANC
In general we also refer to the importance classes from EC8

Sadly does not yet include retaining wall type structures.

ASCE 61-14 defines the applicability of the three requirements as follows:-

This is still work in progress
It is proposed to include this neat table:-
Performance factor allows conversions for ASCE 61-14
“Controlled and repairable damage” requirement
EC 8 Importance class and factors (for Damage limitation and No Collapse requirements

Table 5 allows the user to point to:- EC8 where required (e.g. for retaining type quay
walls) ASCE 61-14 where required (e.g. for
jetties/suspended slabs)
Further guidance will follow.
Decision for the CB502 committee! Include in in Parts 2 to 8 Draft a specific part for Maritime Works, seismic
design For either we are hoping that the experts who
assisted can continue to help.

The great work is completed! (er….almost!)
The coverage remains huge.
About 7 years work
The interface for all parts of BS 6349 to face to all parts of the Eurocodes is now rationalised
Already getting noticed internationally The Eurocode committee TC250/WG6 preparing the
wave actions EC is thinking about using Part 1.2 as a basis.
